The entire point of forums is for people to state their opinions, and when the majority are against you, you are just getting defensive.

Classes work for some games yes, and EVERY game has balance issues. If Halo used a class system similar to CoD 4/5/6, Then it would be plagued with the same problems. People whoring the same weapons, and it would ruin the entire Feel that Halo has had for 9 years.
If It went with Team Fortress type classes, many people wouldn't play it, because it's more complicated than normal. I know that sounds dumb, but Halo is like the "FPS for dummies" of the gaming world. It's simple, and that's why many people like it. Change that, and you lose fans.

As a Halo fan, (Been one for nearly 7 years) I wouldn't pick up a class based Halo game, because it isn't what I want to play. I want a game, where my team needs to communicate to get to the power weapons, and have map control. I want a game where everyone starts off equal, same weapon, same health, same everything. It's a fair ground.

CoD rewards players who play the game for 9000 hours strait better weapons, and it makes it unfair for the new players, because they get crappy weapons, and it's hard to defend yourself. I don't want to see halo turn into that.

TL;DR: If Halo gets a class based multiplayer, me and many other gamers won't pick it up, Bungie will lose profit, and microsoft won't let that happen.

Why is everyone using the word "Classes". Seriously, people are getting into heated arguments over PURE SPECULATION. all we have seen is the teaser, and the Reach silhouette picture with the five different Spartans. Stop calling them classes. They are just different Spartans. For all we know, the variations between the Spartans could be so small as their primary weapon that they start with at the beginning of games. However, it could be much greater than that. I don't see why people are so negative towards the shift to a more hardcore game, I really don't. If they do implement "Classes" or different Spartans with different attributes/starting weapons/ equipment,etc, there will OBVIOUSLY be the option to remove the class choice for customs, force class, and there will definitely be different play lists for each, or the hardcore playlists will force you to be one of the Spartans. This is so blatantly obvious, because its Bungie, and the amount of freedom that they allowed the player in Halo 3 was MASSIVE. It is ignorant and actually quite rude to assume that they will somehow mess this up. Its BUNGIE. You wouldn't be obsessively trolling their forum threads for their new game if you didn't love the last 3, or even just the last one. Seriously guys, quite arguing and getting so mad at each other. You KNOW that this new game is going to be amazing regardless of whatever Bungie chooses to do. They have always found a way to cater to the social/casual, hardcore, and alternative gamers. If you are worried that they will ruin the halo fps formula or any aspect of the game, don't, because if they were to implement different Spartan classes, there will be as much freedom to change the settings as in H3, or probably even more. Honestly this is common sense, and I just had to say something. Seriously what are you scared of? That the sniper 'class' is gonna be so good that you'll get your head blown off every game? That the Machinegun 'class' is gonna be so overpowered that your gonna get demolished close range? That some kid with a machete is gonna run up to you at super speed and cut your gonads off? This game has the possibility to be the best out of all 4 yet, and seeing as how bungie has confirmed that it is their last Halo project, it goes without saying that they will do their absolute best. There is going to be an early Beta for crying out loud, they use the beta to blend their ideas of the game with the fans interests/ arguments. They really can't mess this one up, so just take a chill pill, for reaalzz. 'nuff said.

Ok, lets put both non-class and class systems into Halo: Reach. Now the game will have bad graphics, a crappy campain, crappy gameplay, JUST so the disc would have enough room to allow both non-class/class systems.

Holy -blam!-! Halo is a Sandbox game. How can we have all the customization of the previous games in a class based game. The game would be too linear. Look at all the custom gametypes in Halo 2 and 3 that can't be play in a class based game. It would be ludicrous to only allow class based gameplay in Halo. Halo could of course allow class based gameplay because its a sandbox game but limiting Halo to it is retarded.

Classes would not work with halo, period. The weapon sandbox in Halo is very different from realistic shooters like BF, where almost all weapons function the same. In halo each weapon has a specific function and niche. Bungie would have to completely re-balance every weapon in the sandbox and add different weapons with the same functions in order to prevent a MP game where everyone is using the same guns.

Then there's vehicles, how do you balance vehicles in a game where you can choose a vehicle killer from spawn. Vehicles work in battlefield because anti vehicle and anti air weapons held by personnel are not nearly as effective as the advanced sci fi anti vehicle weapons in halo. this why it has balance in BF. It wouldn't be balanced in halo, unless they completely nerf the anti vehicle weapons.

thoughts on these issues OP? i may buy into the idea of a class based game if someone could honestly explain how it would work without killing the variety and nerfing the weapons.





I'd like to start by thanking you for actually using an intelligent response. My answer to the weapon balance issues mainly would be an idea I mentioned in the OP. If we played as Marines instead of Spartans, weapons would behave differently in the hands of the player, as well as against enemies. Rocket launchers would be heavier, reload slower etc. because you're not a Spartan who can juggle warthogs and whatnot. Now obviously the chances of this are extremely unlikely, judging by the appearance of the Spartans in the banner.

As for alienating hardcore fans, Bungie is still releasing new maps for Halo 3, so it's not like they don't want to support it at all into the future. People who don't want to play Reach mulitplayer can stick with Halo 3, as they'd be fundamentally different. You already bought Halo 3 so they already have your money. Reach will still sell well regardless. I know I'll probably still be playing both games, there's no reason it's impossible for other players.


Your suggesting that they make Halo like a realistic shooter, which it isnt, Halo will never be a realistic shooter because then it wouldent be Halo, Halo is a unique series of games that has its own style and format, this is why its raised the bar for all shooters. If they did what your suggesting they do, it would just be another battlefield/CoD hybrid.

OP, answer this question, Why do people play halo. Its because its a unique FPS that doesent rely on taking the same features from other games. If we wanted to keep the halo gameplay and just put classes in then Halo : reach, would be one of the biggest fails ever. Simply because of the weapon balance. Say it was a CQB map, everyone would just camp with shotguns, Say it was a normal symetrical map, everyone would use snipers or rockets, Halo CANNOT function in a clased based system unless bungie chages the WHOLE concept and gameplay of halo, If they "balanced" everything in your way it would be just like CoD or Battlefield and why would you want it to be like that?

We already have CoD and Battlefield, we dont need to make halo a clone of them

I never liked any class based game....people usually just try out each class once until they find their niche, then many weapons go unused.
I like Halo because it forces everyone to start on an even playing field, with power weapons being one of the keys to success. Classes might eliminate the need for power weapons entirely.

for people who like classes, play CoD or Battlefield or something. I love CoD but i like playing halo because of the great multiplayer and the ability to pick weapons on the way, having to race for the sniper rifle on valhalla is always good fun, i would like them to keep it this way.

Thank you for your question. But do you want me to answer it, or do you want me to agree with your answer? Because I slightly disagree. I don't think Halo is terribly unique because it's not like other games. It is like other games. Halo is a Goldeneye or a Perfect Dark with jumping. Some controls are different and there are different elements but the basis is the same. What makes Halo unique is that it does things other shooters do, but does them BETTER. Surely we can agree on that. Otherwise we wouldn't play Halo as much as we do.

As to map balancing, I need to be clear again. I am not talking about Halo 3 with classes. There would be no issue with map balancing. A CQB map would be useless. A normal symmetrical map? I'm thinking more along the lines of Blood Gulch-type maps, but probably even bigger. This is not an arena-style game with classes. It would be a big game. An entirely different style of Halo. A complete step in another direction. Not a whole jump into another playstyle with the franchise permanently, but a branch to try out a new angle on the universe.

And again, it would not be a clone of another game. Just like Halo is not a clone of Perfect Dark with jumping, a new type of game would still surely have that Bungie formula that puts it a step above others of the same kind.

Bungie values the MLG community, and they sure as hell wouldn't let that number of people go. MLG is built for FPS and TPS. Like shadowrun, Halo, and Gears. Classes would ruin MLG, and that wouldn't sit over well.

Classes would actually not ruin MLG, provided bungie include custom game options. MLG gametypes could limit the classes to a single one, and change their spawn weapons.
