**Check this thread for updates as I get more info**

New updates - ODSTs and "the squad"

Things to be added/updated
A forum banner topic- will analyze the banner of this forum for potential characters.
Trailer topic- Analyzes the trailer (will mostly just link to relevant threads)
Black Team- will discuss characters from Black team in the upcoming comic series.
- Once it comes out.

I've been fairly active in this forum since its conception and, as I haven't seen a thread similar to this(excluding those with no attention to grammar and punctuation), I've decided to make one. It's a thread to make sense of all of the rumors going around and clearly say what is possible canonically and what isn't . I'll try to come up with all possibilities, but if I miss one, or a reason why something is likely/unlikely, please tell me. Also, feel free to discuss anything relevant.

Links:

The Fall of Reach(book)
First Strike(book)
Battle of Reach
Haloverse

Other threads to check out:

Possible plots for the game
- Follows the book(s) The Fall of Reach and/or First Strike
- Parallels the book(s), like in MLG Cheehwawa's script
- The Chief is having flashbacks (like in ODST) or he went back in time (both very unlikely)
- Something new and completely random the Bungie pulls out of nowhere that has to do with Reach.

Spartans

Spartan-II

John-117 a.k.a. Master Chief - I'm not even going to comment on theories that this is following Halo 3 in any way. It is highly unlikely that he'll be a main character, considering his involvement was limited to he, Linda, and James going on a mission to wipe the NAV data from the Circumference. This might be a level, but if he's in the game at all it'll probably be limited to that.

Gray Team - Extremely unlikely, because, as far as we know, they haven't been seen since long before the Battle of Reach(or after)

Other important Spartan-II's from the novels - Following the events of First Strike is a possibility, with characters like Fred, Kelly,Joshua, etc. This is unlikely because, though many people would want to play as their favorite characters from the novels, the story has already been told and room for a new storyline is severely diminished.

Team Beta - Team Beta was, as far as I know, never confirmed KIA just assumed so. It's possible that they pulled out once their cause was lost or that some *looks up at the banner*, 5 of them left on another mission while the others lost their lives defending the generators. Refer to Cheehwawa's thread for a better explanation and epic story.

Spartan-II, Class-II
Posted by: Fos Tis Krisis
It is also possible we may play as the second wave of Spartan IIs Mendez was working on before his transfer to Onyx.
Ah yes I forgot about that. Halfway down the page There has been much speculation on this matter; some people say that the Class-2s are just a myth, that Halopedia is wrong. I honestly have no idea what's right. If you look at the page for CPO Mendez, it says that the program was "delayed indefinitely". Following this was 6 years in which he was on active duty. I don't know if during this time he managed to train anyone, but based on the fact that he "fought the Covenant on five worlds, won two more Purple Hearts, and was promoted to Senior Chief Petty Officer" I think that it's unlikely. So, there are two conflicting views on Halopedia, one saying that there was a class-II program and one saying there wasn't. I'll let you decide which to beleive.
EDIT Also, check This post by ghostvirus, it's very insightful.

Spartan-IIIs - Canonically, they wouldn't make any sense. The First 2 companies, Alpha and Beta, were both destroyed (the only survivors being 2 Spartans from Beta). Gamma, the only company left, was on Onyx during the Battle of Reach, and recieved deployment orders weeks later. Also, the S-IIIs used SPI armor, which is noticably unlike the armor in the forum banner.

Other UNSC personnel - Unlikely, due to the emphasis of Spartans in the Reach trailer

The Squad Certain characters might be in the game; probably not all:
Dare - Was at the Battle of Reach
Buck - Also was there
Dutch - Unknown, possibly not due to his part in the Battle of Ariel
Romeo - Same as Dutch
Mikey - Since he's never seen a planet get glassed, no
The Rookie - Unknown
Most likely, if anyone, Buck and Dare will make it in the game.

ODSTs - Many people beieve that this game will be about ODSTs. If you look closely at the forum banner, you may notice that some of the characters (especially on the far right) look like ODSTs in a way. However, this is unlikely, because, as stated, the emphasis on Spartans, and because Bungie probably wouldn't make a second ODST game that would precede the first, because it would lose the characters that weren't present on Reach (which might be everyone except Buck and Dare).

Marines - Not too much speculation on this topic. For a long time, many Halo fans have wanted a marine based game, but Bungie might consider ODST being that. There isn't any evidence hinting that Reach is a Marine-based game. Also, marines would be far too vulnerable to make a practical set of main characters

ONI
Posted by: Peacekeeper MX
Do you think there is any possibility that we might play as ONI?
They are viewed by the rest of the UNSC as an almost separate 'organisation' and as they are extremely secretive it gives any scriptwriters a lot of room to work in without breaking cannon.
At first I thought no, but why not. ONI is one of the most mysterious aspects of the Haloverse. Little is known about it as it is highly classified. It is split into four (known) sections.

-Section Zero - It is thought to be ONI Internal Affairs, charged with rooting out and eliminating illegal programs. I doubt Halo: Reach has to do with internal affairs...

-Section One - Intelligence-gathering section. It's possible that there will be levels that gave to go with intelligence operations, but unlikely as a whole game.

-Section Two - Propaganda. No.

-Section Three - My personal favorite, the top-secret projects division. Has been responsible for: Spartan II and II programs (dont know about S-I), the NOVA Project, and many other "black ops" programs.

-From HalopediaONI employs members of other military branches, or even civilians, to complete the Division's shadowy work.

So, if this game is about ONI operatives, it'll most likely be Spartans (they were an ONI project so they could be counted as ONI), another Section-III project, or maybe a Section-I intelligence operative.

The Covenant- I'm just assuming everything except Elites and Brutes aren't plausible.

Elites, aka Sangheili or dinosaurs - I find this very unlikely, mainly because in the Halo trilogy you never have to fight the UNSC (except that marine on 343 Guilty Spark in Halo: CE, but he doesn't count). Also, the game seems to be more of a dark, almost post-apocalyptic game, like Halo CE, not the bright and vibrant Halo 3. I doubt it would be dark for the conquerors of Reach.

Brutes - Nothing would surprise me more than if we are Brutes in this game, and I hope that I don't need to explain why.

Alright, well that's it. Please post any comments because I want this to be a comprehensive assessment that is from the community as a whole, not just my opinions. If anyone posts something that makes it into the OP, I'll be sure to give them full credit, and if you have a relevant thread, post it and I'll put it in.

Post away.

Well I think that ONI is more of an organizational thing, they only have a select group of actual people who do field work.

Fight for Freedom

This is probably the sanest thread on the forum, you just used your common sense and it seems the most likely, and we can only hope there aren't any brutes in Reach. because they suck. nuff said.

  • 08.01.2009 12:54 PM PDT

I agree, but you can kill 3 marines in Halo 2 (Sacred icon level) as the Arbiter.. so you do kill marines.

If we can play as brutes it would be great, unlikely but great
(last year I thought, "maybe a brute campaign in H3 ODST..." but no )

playing as Elites killing humans in Halo Reach would be intresting, I want that, I want to play as the winners of the battle too.

I hunt for the Prophet of Contentment, the San 'Shyumm that murdered my son, and stole his birthright, his Energy Sword. They call our species Heretics. They claim to all that our tongues sting, our words a vile poison that feeds on the unworthy. I have seen the true face of Heresy. The head of a gallant warrior lay on the ground. His neck scorched and blistered, scarred by his own blade. I shall retrieve the weapon, and drive it through that bastard's heart! Punishment for his sins is nigh.

It is also possible we may play as the second wave of Spartan IIs Mendez was working on before his transfer to Onyx.

It's not a theory... its a fact. Alpha was wiped out. Beta was wiped out except for two, who stayed on Onyx to train the Gammas. The Gammas were on Onyx until around October 23rd according to Ghosts of Onyx, whereas Reach fell on August 30th.

That might well be true but as ONI is comprised of 4 or more sections and we know hardly anything about any section each section might have a ground force/security force. We know section one has one or at least has trained personnel (Dare).
Added to the fact that reach is the site of ONIs castle facility. The largest facility outside of the Sol system gives more credence to the idea that ONI might be a playable 'faction'.

TEAM BETA FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 08.02.2009 6:14 AM PDT

I think that if we play as an Elite, we should play as one separated from the rest of the Covenant, having to battle his way through swarms of Humans. And I wouldn't mind killing humans as an Elite, we have no qualms doing it in CoD.

Well my point is not that we would mind it, but that traditionally in the game we don't have to. It might change in Reach, but it is noteworthy that we haven't had to so far.

Wow, a thread that makes sense. Though what about prophets. maybe we'll get to play as them?

  • 08.02.2009 9:59 PM PDT

The ODST 251st

I personally think you have very good ideas, save for the one about playing as the brutes. I think that Bungie might incorparate them into multiplayer but not the campaign. I think so because the elites and the prophets both looked down upon the brutes at that time (the prophets only thought they were superior to elites around 2557 [Reach was invaded around 2532]). That would mean that you feel less superior and would make the game feel more like Halo 3: ODST.

Well I'm not really talking about multiplayer... this is purely a "who are you going to be in Campaign" thread.
