Ok, here is my research about the so called, Ghost of Halo 2 multiplayer.
A ghost, can be a player that lagged so much, that he didn't register into the teams, he "appears" to glide, but what makes him a player, is that he has a firing animation with weapons, like a regular player. The laggy "ghost player", unless on purpose, does not generally know he is lagging, but generally, this lag prevents him from communicating to anybody.
A real ghost, on the other hand, may be invulnerable, or simply normal, or tough to kill, when the ghost fires, it does not appear he is shooting, and the player, whether being meleed, or shot at, by the ghost just generally hears his/hers shields deplete and take damage.
The ghost, (under my hypothises) is capable of meleeing you without lunging, (similar to the melee system, if not identical like Halo CE) instantly, and quickly, and has infinite grenades, and possibly infinite ammo.
According to Halopedia, the ghost is capable of using any weapon, whether its on the map or not, it can switch weapons instantanously, as for the way it appears, it always glides, but it does have a jump animation, and reload animation.
As for being killed by it, whether it is a laggy player, or a ghost, any kill from it will be credited to "The Guardians".
So, if the ghost appears to be incapable of any shooting animation, deals damage instantly from a short distance, and occasionally disappears, it is a real ghost, if the ghost has a firing animation, it is likely a modder, or a laggy player that didn't register on the score board.
Interestingly, the Ghost appears in Halo 3 as well.
