Yeah, I have heard quite a bit about how Halo 2's ranking system was far better. I'm not too familiar with it, though, as I didn't play Halo 2 online very much. If Bungie decides to use that instead, more power to them.
The level bracket does even out fairly fast with such a large population, but I'm hoping that this will discourage second accounts for "rank lock" and just wanting to beat up noobs.
Sorry, I should have been clearer. When I said Halo 3 has a large population I meant that I'd assume Reach would have a similar or even greater population, therefore with the amount of wins needed to advance to the next level increasing each time the skill based system remains the same. It would require a certain amount of wins versus losses to rank up.
Example: Level 1 individual gets to Level 2 with one win, Level 2 to Level 3 with 2 wins... etc. At higher levels, maybe Level 34 gets to Level 35 with 15 positive wins.
However, losing two games at Level 3 reverts you to Level 2. At Level 34 if you win 7 games but lose 4, you're still 12 positive wins away from Level 35, but you're 18 negative defeats away from Level 34. With this method Leveling up becomes gradually harder but leveling down isn't an immediate concert if you just lose one or two games.
Like I said before, I think an exp style Leveling system isn't a good way to measure skill, especially at the top levels where even though I'm a 50 I'm a lot better than some 50s and a lot worse than a large amount too.
