I think the more dynamic a map can be, the more interesting it becomes. Not that there is anything wrong with classical full static maps with players only, but when one starts implementing a physics engine in the manner Bungie has done the player is able to engage in a good deal more interaction with the map itself, leading to all sorts of interesting occurrences. Simplistic AI units would be an extension of this, and even if they do nothing more than add to scenery (such as the sentinels that drift by on Construct) it still makes the map more unique. Now assuming these are AI units programmed to interact with the player on a basic level, it creates a considerably more dynamic experience.
One of the reasons I love to play halo is because of the endless variety one will find, and I have faith that Bungie will expand upon this even more so, doubtlessly in many clever ways. I think it is their innovation and attention to quality that makes their games as great as they are, a tradition that they will no doubt continue. Ideas such as this are just the thing we can expect them to refine and present to us players, in a form that probably shall provide many hours of entertainment.
