I have always wanted Bungie to let us view a lot of the in-game assets from different angles in the main menu. I have played a few games which allow you to do something similar to this: Mobile Suit Gundam: Journey to Jaburo, and Spiderman for the PS2.

What I am suggesting are new options for the main menu. You click them, and you get a selection of numerous items/objects/bipeds which appear in the game, in some basic animation you can see in campaign. We could essentially see any character from this game, and you could use similar controls to Forge or Theater's free-fly to get a 360 degree view of the item in question.

This would not take much space (like how saved films are small in size) as it is stuff from the campaign rendered alone. You could fly around it and view it from all angles.

They could be unlocked by encountering (seeing a character, killing an enemy/seeing an ally, picking up a weapon, getting in a vehicle) said item in campaign mode.

Characters
Clicking "Characters" would bring you to a list of all of the characters in Halo REACH. Each would have the name displayed as well as a brief biography alongside the ally (or villain).

Bestiarum
Clicking "Bestiarum" would bring you to a list of all the species which you encounter in Halo REACH. Each would have its native name (i.e. Human/Sangheili), alien name (i.e. Vermin/Elite), and Latin/Forerunner name (i.e. H. sapiens/Macto cognatus) displayed, as well as a brief description of the race.

You could further unlock all different ranks you encounter in campaign mode, and they would have a description of what the rank does (i.e. Spec Ops Elite would have a description of the types of missions they go on, as well as their weapon load-outs).

You could make them do things by pressing buttons. The buttons you press have the same effect as they do when you play (i.e. R trigger shoots their weapon, B button melees, A button jumps, etc.) and if they have taunts (for when they would kill you in campaign), click the Right Thumbstick in to see it (i.e. a Grunt does a little dance and says something about you being a bad Demon).

Armoury
The Armoury will give you a list of all weapons which you have picked up in campaign (or multiplayer) as well as brief description of the firing mode, effectiveness, uses in the field, etc. You would have a 3d view of the weapon, and you could press the R trigger to watch it shoot. The description would be something similar to this:

M7 SUBMACHINE GUN

The M7 submachine gun is gas-operated and magazine-fed. It fires 5mm x 23 caseless ammunition. Recoil from all but sustained fire is very controllable. Although the M7 submachine-gun is primarily issued to vehicle crews, it is also a favorite of commando teams in its sound suppressed version -- the M7S.

Sustained automatic fire tends to cause the muzzle to "walk" upwards as recoil compounds. Submachine guns, while not accurate over long distances, are particularly effective in close quarters.

Motor Pool
Similar to the Armoury, only you would unlock vehicles by getting into one in campaign or multiplayer. You can click buttons which will have the same effect as they would if you were playing (L trigger boosts/E-brakes, A button air brakes/brakes, etc.). The vehicle would be driven by your multiplayer character.

Cinema
This is just a bonus for my thread. I got the idea from wcd45's thread on the same thing. It would be nice if we could watch all cinematics from the Halo games (Halo Wars, Halo Reach, Halo 1, Halo 2/Halo 3: ODST, Halo 3) in chronological order of when they happened in the Halo universe. Of course they could be chosen individually, rewinded, fast forwarded, paused, etc. but they would appear as they did in the games they came from, not remade in the REACH engine.

What the Main menu could look like:

Campaign
Firefight
Matchmaking
Custom Games
Forge
Theater
Cinema
Intel -- click intel to open up the sub-section where you choose from the below:
> Characters
> Bestiarum
> Armoury
> Motor Pool

What do you think?

That's the greatest idea I have ever seen!! I hope Bungie consider this.

Well, most of this stuff could just go into the manual or a separate bonus disk.

Why bonus disk? It wouldn't take up much space on the main disk (like how saved films are very small). I'm not talking about pictures, either, I'm talking about the actual model used in the campaign rendered alone, and you could fly around it and see it from all angles.

I'd love to be a 10 year old and tell my mom I'm going on an adventure out into the world catching Pokemon, with her full support. Never mind the fact that there are rapists, criminals, and murders out there, or the fact that I may get killed by a Pokemon.

Luckily I have Pikachu.

I like this idea, Perfect Dark 64 had something simillar to this.

it's better if you only had the cinematics from reach... why would you wnat the exactly same cinematics from older games?

I think the main menu should be like this:
-Start solo campaign

-Coop
-campaign
-firefight

-Multiplayer
-matchmaking
-custom games
-forge
-theater

-Extra
-settings
-cinema
-encyclopedia
-characters*
-bestiarium*
-armoury*
-motor pool*

* are featured in the encyclopedia

Remember,
It is easy to be male
it is another thing to be a man.

A good idea.
Many games already have a feature of this sort and i suppose it wouldn't be that hard to implement it.
Another brilliant idea from Cheehwawa.

It would be interesting. We got them with the Halo 3 Legendary Edition, would be cool if we had them in the Standard Edition of Reach. Its not like Bungie would be doing anything special to them that would warrant they are only included with the more costly LE.

im sorry but im not a huge fan of most of it, besides the movie thing thats about all i like about it. I think that its kind of a waste of time and id rather of have something huge in game like a game type with bots like ive read earlier. though i do admit this was creative and i give you applause for the idea

I hunt for the Prophet of Contentment, the San 'Shyumm that murdered my son, and stole his birthright, his Energy Sword. They call our species Heretics. They claim to all that our tongues sting, our words a vile poison that feeds on the unworthy. I have seen the true face of Heresy. The head of a gallant warrior lay on the ground. His neck scorched and blistered, scarred by his own blade. I shall retrieve the weapon, and drive it through that bastard's heart! Punishment for his sins is nigh.

I'm not entirely sure most of this would be necessary.

Characters, Armory, Motor Pool, and Bestiarium would be found in the game manual, the Cinema should go into the Campaign menu, and only feature Halo Reach's cutscenes.

In Halo 3, the Armory, Characters, AND Motor Pool were all in the Manual (though they were cut down alot...) The Bestiarium and Cinema featuring cutscenes (and commentary) from Halo CE and Halo 2 were all on the Legendary Bonus Disk (along with a bunch of other goodies). And in the Limited edition, the Bestiarium was featured as an extra book (like Halo Genesis, or the Conversations booklet in Halo 2 [took me a long time to translate and read the Covenant text btw.])

But I'm suggesting rendering the object in question so you can have a 3d view of it and see it in a way you could never see it in gameplay. Or a picture.

You know what WOULD be awesome, the Cutscenes allowed you to go into a free flying Camera and view them from different angles.

win!! this is a great idea!

but let me tell u something, all those things bestiarum, armory etc. most of them are likely to be part of the guide or the limited edition...

Halo Reach limited edition: bestiarum(maybe in the guide) and special stuff making of etc.
Game Guide: characters, motor pol and armory

your idea is good but this is more likely...

  • 08.02.2009 7:28 PM PDT

I love the idea, but with the cinema mode I'd like to see the cut scenes remade in Reach's engine, then rendered to add realism. It would be nice to have both old and new versions, though :)

  • 08.02.2009 8:57 PM PDT

Suck it Red!

I like your idea, but aren't Characters and Beastarium sorta the same?

Unfortunately it would probably be pushed to the LE edition, even though it would be simple copy/paste from the game code. I am suggesting something that could not be included in the guide, though, because it would be an actually rendered model from the campaign that you can fly around and view in 3d from every angle, in ways you couldn't even see in gameplay.

  • 08.03.2009 8:50 AM PDT

I like the idea...but I don't think it's going happen. Maybe Bungie should check this thread out, much?
