We're all well aware Reach is going to be a FPS, but what would the actual gameplay be like for Multiplayer? sure Matchmaking is fun, but whats my goal? the only time i felt beneficial is when im saving my team mates from a sniper who had their sites on them. very short termed and whether or not i waited for them to die before i responded had limited effect on the game as a whole.
So heres my idea of what matchingmaking for Reach should be. i say "should" because this is my idea of a "perfect" multiplayer game.
Since this was such a heavy weight fight, there had to be a tug of war over the planet, no? just this little bit of information, opened up a cool door for bungie. Instead of putting up players in a box canyon and told to kill each other 50 times in X minutes for no reason, why not make them fight for territory of the planet? since that is basically what the fights on Reach were all about.
Vision this: Start the game, Youre prompted to create a sub-account for your gamertag. with this account you choose between the UNSC or the Covenant. Each with their own Pros and Cons for choosing them, after a quick customization of your in game avatar, You are then greeted with a hologram of the planet, with there being 20 or so different areas. (for example) Blue areas of the planet are controlled by the Covenant while Red is controlled by the UNSC, while maybe flashing red or flashing blue to signify a tipping point of whos controlling what. At the release of the game the territories are split evenly. you then select a certain area of territory and you are then matched up with people within your alliance, against people in the opposing alliance. The people who win in this small squabble give their side a boost of control for that selected area. The bigger the win margin the greater you help take control of that area.
For example, Say you need only 100 points to take control of area A. a few of my chums and I play against some people and we beat them by 10 points in Team Slayer. then 10 Points are added to the UNSC side. However in some other game going on at the same time, the Covenant side annihilates the UNSC side with a 30 point margin. Their 50 points subtracts from my 10 and gives the covenant 20 points to their side. But the "deeper" you are in the opposing Alliances controlled territories the more points are needed to take control. So that way, an area thats been in control from one alliance has a higher value than one that was recently captured.
See what im saying here? How well you do in your game effects everyone in your alliance. This will encourage Teamwork and overall, positivity in matchmaking. Alot of the negativity on matchmaking right now is "Im better than you, look at how high my kills are compared to yours". since it is possible for one person to rack up he wont give a damn on how well his team does. If he does well enough hell get XP regardless. However with a system like this, its more about your team, and the X thousand people on your alliance. And ofcourse standard matchmaking rules still apply so your always with people within your skill range.
And ofcourse, bungie could throw a spin on it. If UNSC controlled Area B, they get a certain perk for everyone that is on the UNSC side and vise versa for the Covenant, or maybe even go farther than that, so that only one side gets a certain perk. That way even though you dont get anything special for taking control you get the satisfaction knowing the enemy didnt get an advantage. Or maybe control of an vehicle depot, or a MAC cannon.
Hell, maybe people would get REALLY into it. open private websites to plan large scale attacks one another with fellow members.

I dunno, maybe im still just dreaming or im alone on this subject. But to me this sounds pretty -blam!- ing awesome. And imagine it on the large scale the Halo community is, thousands of thousands of players, on different time zones, none the less. Itll always be changing. A territory that you finally regained after weeks of hard work from your alliance was taken over again while you were asleep. Always different and exciting and DEFINITELY repayable for alot longer than what is currently being used for multiplayer
