elites started the civil war with the covenant in the middle of Halo 2. Halo 3 ODST is two weeks before halo 3, but after Halo 2 so the Elites would be allied with us. Look for it in Reach though.

Go Rams and Missouri!

Weekly Update talking about Elites.

Basically, to sum it up, the Elites followed Regret to Delta Halo, and Truth, preffering Brutes and wanting them to take over for Elites, sent them in. Deploying Brutes to New Mombasa was one of the first acts of kicking the Elites out.

I'd love to be a 10 year old and tell my mom I'm going on an adventure out into the world catching Pokemon, with her full support. Never mind the fact that there are rapists, criminals, and murders out there, or the fact that I may get killed by a Pokemon.

Luckily I have Pikachu.

Halo 3 ODST is two weeks before halo 3,
Wrong, Halo 3: ODST takes place two weeks before In Amber Clad arrives at Delta Halo, which means two weeks before the changing of the guards and civil war.

I don't think the smaller children understand that slipspace jumping isn't instaneous. It just shortens the ride by a few hundred years. Making it weeks and months instead of the thousands of light years it usually would.
Don't be too hard on them.

On the bright side you get 2 Christmases!

You stole that from RT comics, didn't you?

Non-Playable Charater

Official reason:

Regret zapped all Elites with him instantaneously when he jumped out of the city.

Real reason:

Creating new AI and behavior for Elites would take too long for such a small project like Halo: ODST, so Bungie rightfully decided to canonize the sudden Elite vaporizing/zapping.

The universe is probably littered with the one-planet graves of cultures which made the sensible economic decision that there's no good reason to go into space--each discovered, studied, and remembered by the ones who made the irrational decision.

The chief fought the Elites and went to slipspace 2 weeks before the Rookie hits the ground.

Nope the rookie and company are coming down just as the chief goes into slip space. Either refer to the trailer again, or see this video

Ok, dude, it's halo 3 right? If I recall in HALO 2 ya know the game prior to HALO 3 at the end the Elites learn the truth about the sacred journey scam and join forces with the humans now due to the fact that they both have a common enemy. SOOOOO thus saying HALO 3 again remember it's AFTER HALO 2 where the union to stop the covenant from destroying the galaxy was created. THE ELITES don't WORK FOR THE COVENANT anymore so why would you fight them if they are HELPING YOU?

  • 08.04.2009 10:47 AM PDT

wow you're an idiot the changing of the guards takes place in the middle of HALO 2 HALO 3 ODST is weeks BEFORE the chief comes BACK to earth

  • 08.04.2009 10:50 AM PDT

If anyone still believes that Elites are going to be in ODST
Can ANYONE PLEASE GIVE ME PROOF that Bungie has lied to us before the release of Halo 2/3?

Bungie All Star Contest Winner Weeks 6,8 and 12

It's something to do with Regret taking all of the Elites away from Earth and then having Brutes deployed in their place as part of the first phase of slowly replacing the Elites with Brutes as the main Military Force.

There was a big story-detail put in a Weekly Update a couple months back. Everytime this question pops up, I usually go look for it, but I've tried my hand at summarizing, so if you don't believe me for whatever reason, nothing's stopping you from looking it up yourself :)

Here you go! :P

This. Bungie created an official reason and integrated it into the canon because sticking with Brutes as the main enemies was more time-effective than coding Elites to be good enemies.

There's the in-game chronology, and then there's the publishing chronology. Here in the real world Bungie decided Elites were good guys when Arby became a playable character in Halo 2.

You haven't shot at an Elite since then.

Regardless of timelines from the games/books/whatever, you will NEVER shoot at Elites in ODST, because Bungie classified them as friendlies and this game is attached to the story arc of Halo, Halo 2 and Halo 3.

Notice how brutes were introduced in Halo 2 to take their place, then polished up in terms of behavior and attributes (like power armor) by the time we got to Halo 3. Brutes are the bad guys now, not because ODST takes place in March versus June on some in-game calendar but because Bungie wants it that way.

Now, before you fire up AOTCR again just to pwn some grunts, elites, and hunters for old time's sake, remember Halo: Reach is set at a time when Elites are bad guys. Bungie can always do whatever they want in order to make a better game or tell a better story*, but at this juncture all existing evidence points to you shooting Elites again in 2010.

*In my opinion the Arbiter as a playable character meant Halo 2 suffered a 50% reduction in fun. Remember Bungie, we wanna be the Chief kicking covie butt. Honestly people, how often do you replay the levels with the Flood in them, hmm? Thought so.

Well there were like 4 levels (delta halo, regret, gravemind, and high charity) with the Master Cheif after the first Arbiter missions in Halo 2 where you shot a lot of elites lol, but i get what you mean. And yeah if anyone wants to shoot elites just wait till reach comes out lol

Bungie have explained why Elites are not present in ODST. Though I personally do not buy it all. It's too neat. We battled through hordes of Elites to reach the Scarab in New Mombasa and Regret's ship suddenly jumped away. It just seems unlikely/unrealistic/unbelievable that all of the Elites made it back in time.
