I like them both equally, when I think about it.
Halo 1's a great ride, just fun the whole way through.Takes the best elements of my favorite sci-fi flicks and crams them into one amazing game. I first played it splitscreen and thought it was cool....when I finally got to play the campaign(non split screen) it blew my mind.
It doesn't have unlockables, there's not much hidden stuff, but Halo is one of the very few games that seems to unlimited replayability. I've played through the campaign once a month, every month since I got the game 4 years ago. I can't say that about ANY other game.
Halo 2 is also a great ride. The storyline was incredible, opened up my interest in the Halo universe even more. The pacing in Halo 2 wasn't quite as tight as Halo 1's, but that's probably because I was standing around and staring at the enviroments with my jaw dropped.
I thought the visual upgrade was amazing. The storyline changes were pretty ambitious, but I thought they paid off. It was cool to see Earth, and the Covenant's High Charity set up. It just brings your further and further into the world Bungie made, and the stuff is just.....cool.
I think everybody issued a collective WTF at the end of Halo 2, and I did too. Not that the game was too short, or that the campaign wasn't satisfying. The closing was just abrupt. I could have kept playing Halo 2's campaign forever.
Halo 2's multiplayer is AMAZING. The setup, everything. It sets standards. You won't hear any complaints from me on the multiplayer. Sure it ain't perfect, but no online game is. But it's a 100 times better than any other console MP game out there. The Matchmaking system was an incredible idea. It makes it very difficult for me to go back to server lists and stuff on other games.
Finally, I have to make honorable mention of Halo 1 and Halo 2's soundtracks. Halo 1's was great, Halo 2's was masterful. I hear it's dangerous to fuel Martin O'Donnell's ego, but the guy deserves mad credit for his work on Halo 2. Best soundtrack I've ever heard in an action game.
