I assume you're using XP Professional - in which cae you need to actually log in to windows as 'admin' and use the password for that [I believe admin, or leave it blank - not entirely sure what the default password is].

For some reason, XP Pro just does that.

If not...I'll check back later if not and then figure something out.

I had the EXACT same problem when I tried to download the patch. I'm the only account on my computer so I am administrator. To fix it, open the start menu than click on the control panel. When that opens, go to 'user accounts' than another menu opens and you have to open 'user accounts' again. Than click on your account name and make sure that the box that sais 'administrator' is checked. If it already is than I don't know what you should do, but if not restart your computer and now your administrator!

Are you sure that works, Gamer? I think you need to BE an administrator in order to authorize administrative clearance for users. Besides, look at it logically...if a limited-account user could change clearance to an administrator by themselves, then there would be no point to a limited-account.

=====><=====

Man, this problem sounds difficult...SLD is one of the most respected members of The Maw (mainly because he knows computers like the back of his hand), so if he cant solve it, almost nobody can...

I suggest hanging in there till the computer administrator comes along, then ask him to change your account to admin. Halo-deprivation wont kill you...or at least, I dont think it will...

But if youre already administrator...then I dont know what to tell you...no idea, man...

Yeah...ME was terrible, so was 2000, and XP = Xperience Problems. 98, for me, never was problematic. Simple, effective, no crashes. I run my old pc on it, same with my server.

What you might try doing is enabling the type-in login at startup - ie, instead of selecting names or bypassin the Welcome screen, you get a standard login w/username and password. Then type admin, maybe leave password empty or type admin, and then login. You can enable that sort of login in XP.

Otherwise...do you have SP2?

The only thing about 98 is that it is old. There will probably be compatability issues with games and such in the future but Halo works fine.

* Pr: ĭnʹtərnĕts: "I hear there's rumors on the uh (pause), Internets...

Ok, if you want access to an Admin account, there are a couple of ways that I know of.

First: The Command Prompt, it's a DOS script that lets you do numerous things with out Bill Gates watching you.

Second: System and System32 folders, they have all kinds of information in there, if you want, you can find the user accounts, and physically change a password in notepad.

To change a password using DOS, open up command.com, or cmd, in 'Run', and type

net user administrator "newpassword"

And another way in DOS, type,

cd C:\WINDOWS\ rename *.pwd *.xyz exit

This will change the drive to your System folder, and rename all the password files to nothing, so you can login to Admin, type nothing, and, voila, you're at the desktop.

***-I take no responsibility for any loss of data, or corruption this "MIGHT" cause, if you feel the need to try it.

EDIT: I beleive I see the files that are connected to the update, if it's legal, I'll .zip them and host it on...?

I phoned microsoft (uk) and the reason is that it wont work is because it is XP pro,its not designed to work on xp pro because it's meant for buissness networking use and not home gaming. Dam them all!!!

OK,

XP Home, first press Ctrl+Alt+Del *twice* in succession to get the standard XP login screen. Log in as Administrator, the password should be blank. This is standard in XP Home, all users are admins, however the Welcome screen(spit!!) is the default. Some program installers are so badly written they will not install unless the username is actually Administrator.

XP Pro, this runs Halo PC just fine, I use it at home and have never had a single problem. I've even installed SP2, just remember to turn off the Windows Firewall.!! It's not needed if you are behind a hardware NAT router.

Hope this helps.

Its not needed if you are behind a router unless it is very very old and you are the target of cyber attacks. Like in Tron or something when the guy sent the virus guy to beat up on the clean file people!
