The rendering of the MC's armor in Halo 2 was designed to make it more reallistic. The way they changed it gives it a more "down to the nitty-gritty" feel.
The bumps and bruises, the etched plates, the sectioned visor, they all give a better sense of it being made of a whole lot of little parts, and gives it a reinforced look implying that it was made to take damage.
