back in the good old days of halo one, each weapon had a purpose, and there were few weapons to keep track of. the Assault rife was used for close to mid range engagements and all out automatic fire madness while running over the hills of BG yelling charge. the Pistol for mid to long range fire when needed, and the sniper for the extra long range. the plasma rifle, plasma pistol, and needler were great for anti- personnel at close to mid range. this simplicity of the weapons and emphasis of the "guns blazing" game style where you run into combat firing full auto and charging the enemy which is what i have come to love about halo. halo 2 made two major changes to the weapons setup. first, bungie replaced the pistol with the battle rifle and the Assault rifle with the smg, in order to make the games rifle more powerful than the pistol (a sniper pistol alongside a rifle that is effective up to 2 ft is counter intuitive, which is what they did in halo 1) and added a pistol that was there just for having a pistol in the game. the second major change in weapons was the ability to duel wield weapons, which allowed players greater flexibility when it came to what weapons they would use in accordance to their game play style, and made the system balanced by not allowing melee or grenades while duel wielding. however, duel wielding created a problem: when you started with a duel wieldable weapon like the smg, people stopped grenading and melee-ing, which deducted from the whole guns blazing, explosions everywhere all out close quarters (albeit with open arenas and a long range component to the fight) style of game-play which i have come to love in halo 1. in halo 3, bungie tried to fix this problem by bringing back the AR, with greater range and more power, giving the player a starting weapon with sufficient range and firepower which made it an all around great weapon. however, what i didnt like about halo 3 was the fact that there were just too many weapons. you had the smg, spike, pr, needler, and ar for close to mid range auto fire; the br, carbine, sniper and beam rifle for mid to long range and the brute shot, fuel rod, rocket and sp laser for vehicular manslaughter/ noobtubing. this long list of weapons combine with duel wielding gave the player so much variety that it took away from the simplicity of halo. halo 3 odst, bungie is pretty much bringing back the halo 1 weapons with a visual twist. the automag for mid range, sniper for long, smg for close to mid range, rocket sp laser (ok, still excessive, but i like having both, unless bungie speeds up the time it takes for the rocket to travel) and the covie weapons are the same as they were in halo 2, giving the human weapons exact counterparts while still giving the covie weapons certain differences which gives the player good cause to use them. this is definitely bringing back the simplicity, but odst is not about guns blazing, and i think it will bring new perspective to the halo story. now, for halo reach.
i have been reading for close to a month now threads about what new weapons to add in or really long lists of weapons, or dare i say it, class systems which are copyoffs of games like battlefield or call of duty. these games are great and i love them for what they are, with those classes because that is what suits that gameplay style, a bit slower and more tactical than halo. the only way i can see a class system for reach to work is like counter strike, where you pick your starting weapon and that is it, no custom perks and no custom loadouts (only way i can se it work, remember, this is not what i want). for reach i would really like to see a true return to the simplicity that made halo 1 great. a handgun like the M6G, effective, but not the hand cannon that the pistol in halo 1 was. an ar like that in halo 3 and be identical in appearance, just with more power and the smart link scope thing that the m7s in odst has (just you wont see it on the gun because it looks like the halo 3 ar, unless you have the halo 1 pistol sight in the front of the weapon under the "hood" or ammo counter), so it can fill the role of mid range that the br has, yet still retaining the full auto, short range awesomeness ( this would be the staring weapon). sniper for long range. rocket launcher with greater rocket speed and a lock on like the halo one plasma pistol, where it goes in the general direction, but doesnt follow you, allowing for the rocket to be the formidable anti vehicle weapon it should be. for the covies: plasma pistol, plasma rifle and (fine, for those who love it, yet it is kinda redundant the) needler with all their specs from halo 1 (i thought they worked out great in halo 1), carbine for true mid range and beam rifle for long range, and the fuel gun for vehicle destruction, offering higher rate of fire than the rocket and more ammo, but slower travel time. in case you didn't pick up on it, duel wilding for the pistols ( plasma and human) and the plasma rifle, to give incentive to use these weapons. this, i think would bring about the return of the fast paced, gun blazing, explosion fest heart racing, blood pumping sheer awesomeness that we love about halo.
what do you think (i provided a poll to make this easier that having to read every comment, but please still comment, because i will mod this (if someone tells me how) to incorporate your ideas if they fit). thanks for reading my long rant, hope it was worthwhile, and that you agree with what i said (or wrote, as the case may be) and i would like to see how you all respond.
