Subject: Why I don't think that Multiplayer will be Class Based Combat.

I know that he hates it when his posts are taken out of context, but Achronos has been reiterating something recently on various threads in the Halo 3 forum that got me thinking:

Posted by: Achronos
In general, Bungie creates games we want to play, and hope you guys like them too. So far, we've been pretty successful with that strategy. More specifically, we think Halo should be played how the player wants to play it as much as possible. If you want to have ultra-competitive BR only battles, then yeah, you should be able to. If you want to play nothing but Grifball, you should be able to. I think this is what makes Halo, well, Halo. If you look at the evolution of the types of gameplay and emergent behavior the sandbox allows through the history of the series, this should be very apparent.

Summary: Halo is so popular because people can take it and do nearly whatever they want with it.

Want to make your own map? Go ahead, use forge to do it.
Want to make your own gaming league? Just modify some of the default gametypes to your needs, gets some friends, and you are set.

Halo has a wide variety of choices for gamers to choose from, and they really like this. I'll agree that this is possibly the reason why Halo is still at the top of the charts even though it is nearly two years old.

I was thinking about Achronos's words (again, sorry for ripping them out of context, but at least I linked to the thread where it was said) today when I was looking at the Halo Reach forum, when I saw all these "Reach should be class based" threads in a new light.

Can you do grifball when the multiplayer is entirely class based? What about mongoose racing? How does a class based multiplayer allow for the many different types of playstyles that we have become accustomed to in Halo 3?

It would just seem very Un-Halo to have a multiplayer that is entirely based off of a class based system, if you know what I mean, it just doesn't promote the same variety as how Halo works right now.

Perhaps I should clarify at this moment that the Title of my thread is slightly misleading. It really should be "Why I don't think that Multiplayer will be only Class Based Combat." Its still very possible that Bungie designs a gametype where you choose a class when you spawn.

Heck, you might even be able to design your own classes, what weapons or equipment they spawn with, stuff like that. Afterall, the people who want to play Halo like Star Wars Battlefront would have that option finally as well with such a system. All I'm saying is that it won't be only this type of gameplay because that would go against that which has made Halo legendary.

Just a thought I had. Entirely open to criticism / comments.

Why? That didn't confirm that reach is class based at all? Besides, anything that big would be announced on Bungie.net first.

It all depends on the kind of system.

I didn't put alot of thought into this and Im not suggesting Bungie put this into Reach it's just a quick example. You would choose your character the same way you choose them in Halo 3 along with your starting weapons and equipment. You can only change your character, starting weapons and equipment at the starting menu. In custom games you can change the traits for each character or even just turn character traits off.

I believe most of the members of Bungie Community don't like to see a new things in the Halo games, not even small one.
I believe Halo: Reach should be completley new but similar to Halo 1 and should be the same tradational Halo.

Sorry, but that proves squat, it some random website that I've never even heard of, and not Bungie.net. Furthermore, even if it was real leaked information, we wouldn't be allowed to post a link to it on this site, so I suggest that you edit the link out.

I really do hope that its not class based at all. Balance is one of the main things that makes Halo so good.

As soon as you add a choice of starting weapon, it removes all balance from the game, and thus ruining it. Unless you can only choose from weapons that are as close to equal in power and accuracy as is possible. Such as the carbine and BR.
But when you start facing a team of all snipers. Class based gameplay fails.

But i am glad that the source has no proof at all in it.

Look... I'm on bungiepedia!

Just because the game is class based doesn't mean you couldn't do Grifbal. In custom game options you could, for example, limit the game to only allow you to spawn as 1, 2, 3, etc. of the classes and could even adjust their traits, such as spawn weapons or speed... kind of like you can do now for Infection, but with more depth.

Grifbal would not suffer, MLG would not suffer, nobody would suffer. There could even be some "classic" playlists with only one class if Bungie wanted.

I would love to be able to start with a carbine, battle rifles are for noobs who can't aim and have to spray bursts all over the place to get a headshot. The carbine requires pinpoint accuracy, you can't just spray and pray!

Maybe the class based is only for Campaign???? I don't think it would be implemented in mm due to the reason it never was

Well why would they be in campaign if classes were never in there?

If this game is class based, Bungie could still let us limit which classes people can spawn as in custom games. For example, you could make everyone spawn as the character in the center of the banner, who would be the "jack of all trades" like the Master Chief in Halo 1/2/3. Further, you could change his weapon load out if they let us. So you could still play Grifball, Tremors, Infection, MLG, etc. and all classic gametypes.

now here's WHY this source is total BS. They say that Halo Reach will be class based... because Lars Bakken said they were working on it when Halo 3 came out? It's like saying Microsoft is being bought out by Google because they released a search engine...

There's more than one Spartan in reach... You really think you're going to have 4 Spartans as allies in every level?

Agreed Halo has been called a sandbox game by Bungie multipletimes so it can't be limited to classes.

Techinically they called Halo 1, 2, and 3 sandbox games... Halo 3 is one of those sandbox games and it isn't limited to not having classes (Infection), so if Reach was a class game it would not be limited to not being a sandbox game, provided Bungie gave us the right custom game options and playlists in MM.
