Agreed Halo has been called a sandbox game by Bungie multipletimes so it can't be limited to classes.
Techinically they called Halo 1, 2, and 3 sandbox games... Halo 3 is one of those sandbox games and it isn't limited to not having classes (Infection), so if Reach was a class game it would not be limited to not being a sandbox game, provided Bungie gave us the right custom game options and playlists in MM.

There is only so much you can do with fixed starting weapons so the possibilities from the previous Halo games just wouldn't be there.

For Custom games? Bungie could let us limit which class we can spawn as (i.e. on a check list, you only allow people to spawn as the central jack of all trades Master Chief-esque character) and you go in to edit the class traits for that character and give him whatever you want to spawn with, like in Halo 3. They could have classes be the primary focus of the game but for fans of Halo 1, 2, and 3 (like myself) they could also play customs or matchmaking playlists which limit the scope to one class which would play like Halo 1, 2, and 3.

I'd rather see the ability to turn classes completely off. Then we could get the old Halo options as well as new ones to increase the weapons damage so we could have power weapons on map.

Well turning classes off would be the same as limiting it to one class, only limiting it to one class would be the better option as you could either select the basic jack of all trades Spartan from the center of the banner (like classic Halo gameplay) or you could replace him with some of the others for quick defaults. You could even limit the game to different classes and have Heavies vs. Lights in Tower of Power or something like that. I love options.

Increasing weapon damage would be good but I don't think it would be necessary as I think if this game is class based all weapons should behave similarly to in Halo 1 (all with range and power), but with some obvious changes. I don't think weapons would be downgraded for class based combat.

If I'm wrong on that, Bungie could add Template weapons for us to make Forge even better.

I think they will do a class based but with elite and spartan like classes so no odst and grunts.
Because if they only used elites and spartans balance is way easier to do. if you need to do grunts, marines, odst and all those other classes balance would be a hard thing to find.

Maybe the class based is only for Campaign???? I don't think it would be implemented in mm due to the reason it never was

If this game is class based, Bungie could still let us limit which classes people can spawn as in custom games. For example, you could make everyone spawn as the character in the center of the banner, who would be the "jack of all trades" like the Master Chief in Halo 1/2/3. Further, you could change his weapon load out if they let us. So you could still play Grifball, Tremors, Infection, MLG, etc. and all classic gametypes.

All i'm trying to say here is that the characters we see on the banner may just be the characters we will play in Reach not on matchmaking and that we might play them as somewhat class based characters in the campaign.

Here’s what Luke had to say about the differences in treatment between the Spartans and Elites in Reach:

“Instead of piece-by-piece customization like the Spartans, Elite customization is a full model swap with models selected from the various Elite classes appearing throughout the Campaign. There are all kinds of reasons for this, not the least of which is our continued emphasis on the Spartan as your identity in Reach.”

Don't forget the flexibility.
Think about vehicles for a class based system. It doesn't work easily in Battlefield, and COD is only trying vehicles out now.

I really do hope that its not class based at all. Balance is one of the main things that makes Halo so good.

As soon as you add a choice of starting weapon, it removes all balance from the game, and thus ruining it. Unless you can only choose from weapons that are as close to equal in power and accuracy as is possible. Such as the carbine and BR.
But when you start facing a team of all snipers. Class based gameplay fails.

But i am glad that the source has no proof at all in it.

Classes only ruin balance if the classes aren't balanced.

But to balance the classes you really need to mess with the weapon sandbox. Can you seriously imagine taking the Halo 3 weapons and trying to make a class based game in halo 3? Everyone would either be a sniper or they would be a demolition shotgun rocket guy.

And yet if you do balance the sandbox to work for a class based system, you can't exactly go back to the sandbox style of Play that Halo was.

Its a dilemma, and the latter is why Cheetwawa's "Lets make a squad based multiplayer game adaptable for sandbox Halo 3 style of play" plan doesn't work out nicely in my head.
