All right people, here's my question.
Do you want Halo: Reach to be completley based on the books or do you want it to be based on the Battle of Reach but from another story perspective?
Thoughts?

I think it will be based on the very end of The Fall of Reach for the openning cinematic, showing the 30 Spartans aboard the Pillar of Autumn, then the Master Chief splitting them up into Red and Blue Teams. From First Strike we will probably see Red Team's fall to the surface, moving to the orbital generators, and splitting up into Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta teams.

From here I believe that we will be playing as Team Beta, since Spartan-259 could only have been a member of this splinter team as he wasn't named as being on the others, and we don't know anything about Beta in the novels. So from the beginning, the story would be pretty new, running parallel to the other stuff in First Strike, but not interacting.

I second that.
By the way Cheehwawa, you did a great job in your Halo: Reach Script thread.

I would like more than anything to do the Spartan's first mission of capturing the rebel colonel. I doubt it will be in the game because they didn't have armor and we'd get to see Chiefy's face.

I want it to have nothing to do with the books, besides the fact that they cover the same battle.

Book to Video game Adaptations = Fail.

If we play as Spartans it will be at least partly about the novels (their landing on Reach) because all of the Spartans fell at the same time in the novels. But agreed, most of the story should be new as the stuff from the books would not make a good game.

Here’s what Luke had to say about the differences in treatment between the Spartans and Elites in Reach:

“Instead of piece-by-piece customization like the Spartans, Elite customization is a full model swap with models selected from the various Elite classes appearing throughout the Campaign. There are all kinds of reasons for this, not the least of which is our continued emphasis on the Spartan as your identity in Reach.”

Absolutely not. The first and 3rd book had incredible tracts of non action, explanation, and detail. There was only a tiny amount of combat, and it wasn't even that interesting.

Check out the group, Planet Reach and talk about Bungie's next game without the annoyance of the public forum. Oh and it's nice there too.

You thought you had lag, it took Jesus 3 days to re-spawn.

We need it to have elements of the book in it, but I want the main story to follow something we didn't see in the books.

Hopefully it will follow a different squad of Spartans than the novel so that there is plenty of room for expanded on the battle. However it will probably end up being the squad from the books because they were the only Spartans that survived...either that or they'll have to explain how a different group survived which is unlikely or you'll be playing knowing that the end of the game is your deathe...Im sure Bungie will pull it off either way...

Ugh...

First on a BWU.. yeah, I'm cool.

No, I don't want it to be fully based on the books. I want an awesome new unheard of perspective. But I mean, in some cinematics, or some places in campaign there will be obvious or hidden references to the books.

Iam enjoying Halo Reach and revisiting some past Bungie games, iam a big fan of Bungie and their online community.

Perhaps an untold story on Reach.

  • 08.07.2009 1:46 PM PDT

Both. There is a decent story gap between the time Chief left on the Pillar of Autumn and when he returned in First Strike.
