A cannon is something that fires a heavy ball. It is commonly found on pirate ships.

You are referring to canon. If something is canon, it means it is part of the storyline.

For example... The Legendary ending of Halo CE is not canon because Sgt. Johnson makes it back to Earth, despite hugging an Elite and standing rather close to a big explosion.

They call it canon to represent the storyline.

Lots of Spartans who are running around killing eachother when there is actually one last Spartan. = Not canon. Multiplayer is often not storyline related.

Sgt.Johnson were at [insert place here] year [Insert date]. = Canon.

Edit: And as above poster said, the ending in CE isn't canon.

Duracell.
I don't keep going and going and going and...
but i Start, and just don't Stop.

So what if the saxophone is black?
it has better tone the the gold one.
damn straight i play Jazz.

official canon story line are events that ACTUALLY happen in the story. Fan fiction, firefight and multiplayer, are non-canon as they are completely unaffected by the actual story.

as SGT johnson is in firefight it is impossible by the story, hence NON-CANON, however the mission Metropolis in halo 2 is CANON story as it is events that actually unfold in the story.

For Halo the parts that are Canon are(in order of events):
Book: Contact Harvest
Book: The Cole Protocol
Campaign: Halo Wars
Book: Fall of Reach
Campaign: Halo: CE
Book: The Flood
Book: First Strike
Campaign: Halo 2
Campaign: Halo 3 ODST
Book: Ghosts of Onyx

not sure if the other 3 books have been released yet so i don't know where they fit in but they are also canon
Campaign: Halo 3

on last spartan is wrong.

by CANON there is the following Spartans still alive:
-3 members of Grey Team
-3 Spartan II and 3 Spartan IIIs in Onyx(Linda, Fred, Kelly and the 3 members of team katana)
-3 Spartans on board the Spirit of Fire (Alice, Jerome, Douglas)
-1 Spartan on board the Forward Unto Dawn (John)

I think there are a few more as well. but you get the point

Yep, I know that there is more Spartan left, but they are M.I.A, I kept it simple by saying that there is one Spartan.
I want to read the books but I haven't found any store that sells them in Sweden.

SEVEN!!! AHHHH!!! Also, there is a theorized "Second Class" of Spartan 2s and there could be more Spartan 3s so there is definitely more than one Spartan left. Oh and don't forget any surviving S1s.

Retroactive retcon. Get used to seeing it in games...hell, Star Trek & Star wars both did it pretty majorly with less backlash.

halo wars is in fact Canon. in fact Douglas is referenced in one of the books. all 3 Spartans are in fact alive. Why can it not be canon?

And as for the flood nobody knew about it because all of the people involved in the battle with the flood in halo wars are stuck with no way home or are dead. Bungie has said it is canon and Microsoft said they will use it as canon story reference for future games

i think that aspect was added as a game play factor. to balance. note no sheild flares on the Spartans in cutscenes. story wise it is in fact canon.
