I was tempted to put the word new in the title, but I know for a fact that these ideas have been thought of before. However, I am going to assemble those ideas in this thread and add my own twist. I am not expecting this idea to be used. If I did, that would be crazy. I also do not expect anyone to like this idea. I am writing this because I would like to share an idea. This being the Reach forum, I have a right to do that.
The current ranking system works. But not very well. Microsoft's True Skill is, to say the very least, easily exploitable. This is a problem that many of us have experienced and, even if it doesn't bother you, can be a problem for other people. Boosting, and griefers being a couple of the bigger problems. Now I do not expect for any of these problems to be fixed completely by this idea, but the frequency of their occurrence, can be reduced. Now to the idea.
As stated before, a problem with True Skill is that it can be easily exploited. This is because True Skill is based not so much on a person's performance, but how much they win and lose. Which is what leads to boosting. I propose a ranking system based on a players accomplishments in a game. A type of this system, rewarding a player for what he/she does in a game, is already being used in Halo. Medals.
In this system, a player would have a "Skill Meter". Whenever a player does something that should be rewarded he gets a medal, a double kill for example. This gives the player points, with points being different for every accomplishment. As a player earns medals, and in turn points, his Skill Meter will raise. Once a player has enough points, he/she will rank up, from leutinent to captain for example.
Okay now, lets talk about points and medals. A player gets a kill. He/She gets a predetermined amount of points. Now the player, within four seconds of the first kill, gets another kill. Double Kill! The player gets points for another kill. But because he/she was able to get a double kill, he/she gets more points then if he/she had just gotten two kills. But wait, theres more. The player spots another enemy. He unloads into him/her. Triple Kill! The player, once again, gets points for killing an enemy, and points for managing to get a triple kill. But our player, being the beast that he is, manages to kill another enemy within four seconds of his triple kill. Over kill! The player is ecstatic. By now, you should be able guess the rest.
But just in case, I will go deeper. Our lucky player has managed to get an over kill. But so has another player. But the second player has killed all the players on the other team. Extermination! This second player will, of course, be rewarded more points than the player that was not able to get the extermination.
From campaign, we have seen that it is possible to track many more things than just sticks, snipes, and multikills. For example in campaign, there is a head shot medal. Plus with the inclusion of much more medals in ODST's Fire Fight, and the likely inclusion of even more medals in Reach, This system of rewarding players for their accomplishments can be made more refined. For example, the inclusion of an "assist medal" could be introduced.
Do you get the idea? A Double Kill is worth more points than a kill. A Killing Frenzy is worth more than a Killing Spree. A Head Shot is worth more than a regular kill or a stick. A splatter is worth more than a normal kill. And a Snipe is worth more than a normal Head Shot.
But how will this reduce cheating?
Boosting. Boosting can be many things. One version is when a party of ten searches in Social Slayer and take turns letting each other win. This type of boosting, called experience boosting, can never be fixed by any type of ranking system. But, it will not cause a problem with peoples ranks. Points for you Skill meter would only be earn able in Ranked playlists. Just as one can only advance in rank while playing a ranked playlist in Halo 3. Another type of boosting is when a party of higher ranking players goes into a game with a lower ranked player. While the higher ups do the work, the lower stays low and benefits from his higher ranking team mates. Because this system is based on individual performance, this will not be a problem.
Griefing. This is when a person goes into a game and betrays, suicides, and other things to make another player's experience less enjoyable. I suggest that, when ever a betrays another they lose a certain amount of points, in edition to the present booting system. But, of course, betrayals can sometimes be accidents. They are unavoidable and will always happen. But, in this system, a player will lose more points every time he/she betrays.
Now, lets talk about ranks and matching. Ranks would be exactly the same, or however Bungie would want them to be. A player would go up in rank as his skill increased, and also as his experience increased, just as it is now. Playlist ranks could also be implemented and would not interfere with the skill ranks.
Concerning matching. You may be wondering, but a player who plays a long time will eventually rank up and could be matched with people who are actually out of their skill level. No. Matching would be exactly the same as it is now. True Skill would still be used to match players. But, like in the Halo 3 social playlists, it would be hidden from the player. This would keep matching a fair as it can be, with Microsoft's current matching system, and would discourage double accounting and boosting, their is no reward for it since your rank is not based on your True Skill.
This system would reward players for players for being good and getting better. It would rank a person based solely on his/her performance. A problem that Halo has is that when players are matched badly, a good player can go down in rank because his/her team mates did badly. This is not fair. With this system that could be avoided. A player on a losing team will most likely not receive as many points as a player on a winning team, but that player will not be punished, as long as he/she did good himself/herself.
And that is it for now. But let me just say this. I do not expect Bungie to pay attention to this. I don't care either. I am just expressing a few ideas and exploiting my right to do that on these forums. Please, post if you like these ideas. Please, post if you don't. As long as you are supporting your views with facts and logic, and are not simply flaming me or anyone else, you are welcome here.
Regret out.
