Seems like since the whole Halo Wars mythic thing Bungie is starting to use cheaper and cheaper ways to make money. As if Halo ODST isn't gonna sell enough copies.

Halo Wars wasn't made by Bungie, and I'm sure they had no say on the pre-order bonus. MS decided that, just like how they decide the prices of the map packs, and whether or not they are free.

Pre-order bonuses are not made to punish you, they help to insure that stores have a high enough quantity for release. This is because, if you pre-order, the store knows that you will buy the game because you basically already have. With this information, they can take the pre-order to walk-in ratio from other games to determine approximately how many of the game they should purchase. The pre-order bonuses increase the number of pre-orders, and help to insure that you will be able to get the game when it comes out.

Johnson in firefight has no effect on gameplay, story, or anything rather than personal preference, so it isn't that big of a deal. Besides, most of the people who are big enough fans of the game to care about having Johnson in firefight are going to pre-order anyway. It isn't like they are giving out extra levels on the campaign or multiplayer maps, being Johnson won't enhance your experience, and not being him won't make the game any worse.
The pre-order bonus probably wasn't even Bungie's idea. I'm sure MS was looking over their shoulders throughout the entire process, and even delayed the game announcement, so I'm sure they suggested it to, or even forced it on Bungie.

If you are going to get the game, and are angry that you won't get Johnson, then just pre-order it, it's not like you have to pay more for it, and you are guaranteed to get it on release day if you do.

ODST FTW

okay so why not just put Johnson in the game itself.

You shouldn't have to pre-order to get it. Honestly you people don't seem to understand this. Johnson should be in the game, if it was 1997 right now and this was n64 johnson would be in the game.

DLC is slowly ruining games. First its an extra character or level, next its a whole new mode.

Just watch I guarantee there's some big bull-blam!- when Reach comes out. Like if you don't preorder reach you don't get something.

Johnson is alot lesser than other companies have done but its just obnoxious and Bungie needs to stop doing things like that.

  • 08.09.2009 3:02 PM PDT

And actually now that I think of it.

We were originally getting the full game for a cheaper price. Now we have to pay 60 dollars which is overpriced according to bungie plus we don't get this extra character.

HAHAHAH Bungie is seriously being ridiculous right now.

60 dollars for a 50 dollar game minus an extra character,

  • 08.09.2009 3:06 PM PDT

is it me or does this kid make no since what so ever he has no argument just saying and its the same with gears golden guns for pre ordering and midnight release chill dude if u don't get it you not paying extra or missing out on any thing so calm down and the price was Microsoft not bungie they are an amazing company ok so stop embarrassing your self .

Here’s what Luke had to say about the differences in treatment between the Spartans and Elites in Reach:

“Instead of piece-by-piece customization like the Spartans, Elite customization is a full model swap with models selected from the various Elite classes appearing throughout the Campaign. There are all kinds of reasons for this, not the least of which is our continued emphasis on the Spartan as your identity in Reach.”

Pre ordering is free.

Pre ordered copy of ODST: $60
Non pre ordered copy of ODST: $60

It allows them to estimate demand for their game.

Johnson isn't in the game outside of Firefight. He is a bonus.

That would be like saying GOW2 was unfair for making you play GOW1 to get RAAM, Carmine, and Kim skins for multiplayer.

Also:
"minus an extra character,"

He is an EXTRA. That is it.

Well, saying that Bungie isn't the publisher for the game, which is MS, they don't choose the price. MS is the publisher, they sell the game, they get the final say in price.
It really does suck the DLC is ruining games. I mean, Halo 3 would be so much better if Bungie never made those 10 extra maps, and if foundry and sandbox, made specifically so we could see the best forge has to offer. Yeah, all those new maps really make Halo 3 suck.
I don't see why people dislike DLC. You don't have to buy it if you don't want to spend money on it. Halo 3 is the only game that I've bought DLC for.
Bungie intended ODST to be an expansion (less than full price), but as the new campaign grew, MS decided that it needed to be full price.
If you've noticed, a MS representative has been present at all the major ODST interviews and announcements.

If you want Johnson enough to complain about it, then just pre-order!

  • 08.09.2009 3:29 PM PDT

That's hardly jumping in to rip people off.
The only special you get is Johnson. You don't NEED Johnson to play the entire game.
In fact, the only thing that is recognizable to you about him will be his voice. You won't even see him, so woopty -blam!- doo.

I'm not pre-ordering the game for Sgt. Johnson, I'm just pre-ordering so I can grab the game the day it comes out and not have to wait weeks until you can actually just walk in and grab it on the shelf without having to worry that they'll be sold-out. Although Halo 3 not having a pre-order bonus really disappointed me, I pre-ordered it and got it the day it came out, I believe we who pre-ordered halo 3 should have had the ability to change the color of the faceplate, or something the other players couldn't have had.

Two wise young men meet at the top of a mountain and futally attempt to push each other off while the third, much older, wise man, that was first to the top, watches. After hours of struggle a victor was decided. As the victor turns to him, too tired to fight more, and the wise old man begins his climb on another hill far above the hill he recently occupied. The victor is left bewildered and lacks the energy to climb further. The wise man and the older wise man were now in their rightful places.

I'm sure they recieved a lot of pressure microsoft to make the game seem more appealing and sell more copies faster.

Scream for joy as Bungie has hopped onto the Pre order our game and you'll get the full game bandwagon. Honestly imagine what it would have been like if the original halo followed this ideal. PREORDER HALO CE and get Chill out!

Honestly why I am punished for not preordering this game, it's expected? instead of me going out to the store and just simply buying it.

What does this hold for all the people who do not preorder...we simply don't get the full experience. Now not getting Johnson isn;t a terrible loss but its just aggravating that something like this would come up.

Seems like since the whole Halo Wars mythic thing Bungie is starting to use cheaper and cheaper ways to make money. As if Halo ODST isn't gonna sell enough copies.

Can't wait for when reach comes out, HEY Pre order each and actually get to play the game.

And this is all besides the cheaper price we were promised but that is MS fault so I won't get into that.

Why are you complaining? You don't lose anything from pre-ordering a game. The money that you put down comes off of the price of the game, and it tells the store exactly how many copies they need to bring into the store on the day of the game's release.

Are you too lazy to go out and pre-order? You don't lose anything at all........Quit complaining.

I'm starting to get convinced that people want Halo 3: ODST to fail. It seems logical. People are whining about the price, even when we all know that Microsoft handles all the pricing. Now we have this guy saying that if he doesn't pre-order and get Johnson......he doesn't get the full game. Well I guess Nintendo must be the devil because they offer special Pokemon at events you can't get anywhere else. Puh-lease. Watch as he now calls all of use Bungie fanboys because we don't share his nerd rage.

  • 08.09.2009 4:44 PM PDT

dude you another kid that complain about everything and that you don't have the money and you hate the whole thing....

get a job, a life, let the air out of your head....

every game out there practicly has the pre-order deal, you know why, because when you pre-order you get off your lazy ass before anyone else....

the early bird gets the worm...
now go to the sign out button on the top right of the webpage and suck it

and how!

Oh stop crying for Christs sake.

It isn't like Bungie pulled an Epic. [Epic Studios gave players the flashback map pack for free when they preordered Gears of War 2. DLC that was already complete at launch. Ridiculous]

For preordering you get one extra character to play as. Right. Without that one novelty you aren't getting the "full experience".

Bungie didn't make Halo Wars, Ensemble did. And Microsoft most likely organized the Mythic shenanigan, as they set the price at full retail [Bungie never "promised" you a $40 price tag, they estimated it as such at an early point in development], and delayed the surprise announcement of Halo 3: ODST.

They act all big and tough when their on camera with their friends and their guns. But when you break into their house in the middle of the night and stick a gun barrel in their face. They cry like babies and and piss their pants.

So you are going to buy the game anyways?
Why not just pre-order and get a little extra, it's not like it's the end of the world.

Halo isn't the only game that does pre-order bonuses.

Hence jumping on the bandwagon

"The object of war is not to die for your country, but to make the other basterd die for his".
General George Patton

Pre ordering is done to ensure people will get there game on the day it comes out. there have been instances where people couldnt get it and they got mad and complained. also pre ordering gives companies an idea of there est. sales will be. so they give up extras in the pre orders to get people to go to the store and pre order to get a more accurate sales estimate.
