Why no levels like Outskirts, Metropolis, or the Storm? I loved the Urban levels.

I think you misunderstand me. I meant no chapter style levels. The levels themselves were good, but I meant that I didn't like how they were cut in half to make it look like Halo 3 had more levels than it actually did.

- More ambient sounds with less soundtrack to cover them up.

I agree with most of that, but this part I thoroughly disagree with.

Coordinated music has in every game made the game in my opinion much more enjoyable. Part of what made Halo 3 less epic was the quieter, less noticeable music.

But the thing is with Halo 3 it never gave you a moment of silence. It was too soundtrack-ey (my own made up word there), it just made it sound like a FPS musical. Back to Halo CE, you was in the Covenant Ship, you could hear the Covenant machinery, and the occasional sleeping Grunt. When walking around in enemy territory I would much rather hear what's going on around myself, because having a soundtrack that's constantly going on in a game just puts me off. I had to turn off the music in Fallout 3 because it just got annoying after a while. I'd sooner hear distant enemies, calm waters, trees swaying in the breeze, things like that.

But of course, everyone has their own opinion on things. You have yours and I have mine.

You have a good point with the Halo 1 example. Perhaps just better music coordination would do the trick, I would still like louder music when it is going though.

Persoanlly I'd like an audio settings option, like Halo PC has. So we can adjust the volume of each type of sound to our own individual liking.

Dont judge life based on how long you lived, base it on how you lived during those years.

Video games are FTE!

Well heres a solution, they should add in music customization, to be able to adjust the music volume or the SFX. Or maybe play your own music if you wanted to. Something like that would be awesome. I know that you can plug in your ipod to the 360 but it plays over everything, so make it able to blend in to the background.

And since were going back to reach maybe have older weapons, maybe not as advanced as the weapons we have in 1, 2 and 3. Also rocket launcher locks on again screw the missle pod. Also in Reach they better have elites, but since that goes against contract, since bungie is no longer owned by microsoft, they should atleast try to put elites back on the enemy side.

  • 08.09.2009 4:14 PM PDT

Here’s what Luke had to say about the differences in treatment between the Spartans and Elites in Reach:

“Instead of piece-by-piece customization like the Spartans, Elite customization is a full model swap with models selected from the various Elite classes appearing throughout the Campaign. There are all kinds of reasons for this, not the least of which is our continued emphasis on the Spartan as your identity in Reach.”

Previous experience has taught me to not expect anything significantly impressive from campaigns.

Specifically:
Halo 2 and Halo 3, respectively.

I hope it has a good campaign, but my expectations are low.

This is compounded by my realization that I will spend far more time in multiplayer than campaign, no matter how good it is.

And since Halo 3 was the magnum opus of the series, I assumed that Bungie threw their best into that campaign, which I did not enjoy in the slightest. Other than new tweaks and UI improvements, I have too many doubts about the campaign mode to get excited.

I agree with OP, having a solid campaign is completely necessary. If Halo CE hadn't been so great, I never would have played Halo 2 or 3. Yes, matchmaking stretches the life of a game considerably, but a good campaign is worth playing repeatedly as well. the idea of switching equipment to operate like 'nades is a solid idea. I've not been a fan of equipment, but it's made a place in matchmaking. And of course, coop would be mandatory.

Seriously, does no one care about having a great campaign experience anymore? Most of the ideas here are just for multiplayer, why don't we come up with some ideas for campaign for a change? I'll start it off.

- Cutscene like events through the eyes of the main character, like in ODST.
- More animations for things like boarding, switching weapons and idle animations.
- Better driving and tactical AI for both sides.
- Tons of weapons and vehicles from the Halo Universe.
- Longer Campaign with at least 15 + levels (NO chapters like Outskirts and Metropolis, The Storm and Floodgate)
- More ambient sounds with less soundtrack to cover them up.
- No equipment, keep VISR (feels like more of a new feature than equipment does), instead make some of the existing equipment into grenades, such as the Power Drain, Radar Jammer and Flare.

Now... how about the rest of the community's ideas to make this campaign be better than even the campaign of Halo CE?

Great post.

First off, the story of Halo is what made me fall in love with the game, the awesome multiplayer was just an added bonus.

I would love a longer campaign. If H3 was just a campaign I would have felt ripped off. The fact that I was able to play through in in 5 hours really upset me. Granted the campaign was "complete" it just didn't seem like filled expectations. The game could have been expanded, charters flushed out, and the story polished a bit more.

I for one thought is was a crime how the Arbiter was just a side kick in H3. The storytelling in H2 utilizing the Arbiter was superb IMO. By cutting his perspective we were left with a huge gap in a story started during H2. I wished that Bungie incorporated and resolved the Arbiters story in H3 the way they did in H2.

Don't get me wrong, the basic idea of equipment was alright, but some of them would've been much better in grenade form, like the Power Drain could've been an EMP Grenade, Flare could've been a Flashbang, etc. And yes, co-op is mandatory, so long as it doesn't affect the length of it.

I agree, the Arbiter should've had a bigger role in Halo 3. I thought I was the only one who actually enjoyed playing as him in Halo 2, I've always liked seeing the Universe from a different perspective, which is why I'm looking forward to ODST. It's quite funny because I was actually thinking that the Arbiter was more of a sidekick in Halo 3 myself.

I would like to see more AI interactions like:
- Marines pulling their wounded comrades out of the line of fire.
- On the covenant side I'd like to see more interaction between the different casts of the covenant. Like Elites tossing aside grunts that run from combat etc.
That's all I can think of right now.

I like those ideas. It would make the AI feel more alive, and would have an immersive feel to it.

Agree. Multiplayer will be good, people shouldn't worry about it

Good ideas, specially the 15 levels part... I've been saying thas since this forum born xD
My ideas are:

Covenant story: Play as a covenant member (I don't care if it is a Brute or Elite)
it would be nice to have something like Firefight Mode but the levels are Wars from the Covenant history, like Taming of the Hunters the Grunt rebellion...

BR: well.. there should be a older Br a bit slower, and with a different fire mode, 1 shot mode.

AR: a stronger Ar

and I thought it would be nice to add the Spear, the Sword should be a little slower than in Halo 3 the Spear is longer so it would keep the Sword back, the Spear pwns the sword.
the Gravity Hammer is pwned by the Sword so, the Gravity Hammer should be stronger, maybe Spear ability of keeping your enemies back shouldn't work with a Gravity Hammer

Signatures are for squares.

Yea, that will go over well.

Make the BR weaker, and the AR stronger,I can just imagine the reaction to that.

Lol right?

Yea halo 3 campaign disappointed me as well and i would like to see a Longer story-line. I love all the ideas people have come up with so far.

I would love to be in a squad type atmosphere, i mean looking up to someone and taking orders from them and not being the lone wolf all the time. I want to actually have cover fire from AI that know what they are doing. So we'll see.

More skulls, to magnify the difficulty (a skull, for example, that limits friendly AI ammunition?)

Remember the Halo 3 Campaign was a huge disapointment? Right, that's why people care about Multiplayer for Halo: Reach because they afraid that Bungie will make Halo: Reach Campaign an another huge disapointment.
Don't get me wrong, I love the Halo 3 Storyline.

Yeah! i wanna see Reach having more of a squad based feel, ( group of spartans or just more marines) im sick of being a lone wolf, it makes the game way less fun. and i totally agree on more levels, halo 3 was a real disappointment in the fact it was so short :(
I would also like to see squads in the game but there are some problems that come with it. Since it would be other Spartans they would be just as good as you and mow everyone down. This would make game play much easier. However if Bungie made them a bit weaker it would make us think, "Maybe the Spartans aren't that good, maybe it's just me?" So there would be some problems incorporating them into game play.

Five years older and wiser
The fires are burning, I'm fire, never tire
Slay warriors in the forests, and on hire

Oh and Bungie dont make it like Halo, where every mission runs to the next. Make it like Halo 1 where there was actually breaks.

I just want it to seem more like a War game becuz Reach is a Huge Epic battle and everyone 99% of the UNSC soldier's that were at this battle die
Halo was about the story and alll that but Reach is gonna have to capture the full effect of War

I want to see the Marines get blown to pieces and pulled by their Marine friends behind a wall or Warthog trying to patch up their friend's wounds after they have been seriously wounded by a grenade or been stuck by a Needler and chunks of thier flesh have been exploded off by the Needler

Well, those Marines went to fight an enemy they could not possibly defeat. After watching some Black Hawk Down music videos, I'd say they need it to be more realistic. When the Plasma weapons hit the Marines, have their skin burn off and start smoking, after it pierces the armor. The Energy Sword needs to make a lightsaber-like cut, with burn marks along the wound. A flight of Pelicans moves in on occupied territory, and you are a soldier sitting in the rear section. Suddenly, Triple-A hits your Pelican, and it shakes violently and eventually veers upwards. You are nearly flung out and hang onto the very edge of the open door frame for dear life. The Pelican barely regains control and you stumble back onto the floor. You see a teammate hanging onto the edge, and grab his hand right before he slips out. You pull him back in, and your ride dodges more Triple-A fire.

I have an imagination like that (I'm making Halo related comics in fact, four of them in effect right now), and I'd like to see Bungie evolve a bit. Add an assault rifle with a scope that looks kinda like an MA5C and an M4 Carbine combined. Add a Laser Rifle that is smaller than a Spartan Laser and is just about the size of a rifle. Make it have a clip and square-sized scope. Have a Covenant shotgun that isn't pump-action. Also, maybe you could make weapon attatchments like in Call of Duty, such as grneade launchers, silencers, heartbeat sensors, advanced scopes, etc.

The list goes on, just a few things I would like to share with you.

Also, when picking up items, make the animations of the characters acutally picking them up. For instance, you need to bend down to grab one weapon and put down your other. Also, when activating doors, actually touch them, and same goes for climbing, etc.

Well it's not the quantity of marines that bothers me, it's the quality. In Halo 3, you're rarely alone (even not including the Arbiter)

Sierra 117 - Marines/ Johnson for most of it
Crows Nest - Marines, marines, marines.
Tsavo Highway - Unless you abandon them, you can have marines literally the entire time.
The Storm - Can have them the whole time.
Floodgate - Marines for most of the first half, Elites for all of the second
The Ark - The whole time, unless they die at the end
The Covenant - Marines, Elites, and Flood.
Cortana - Only level with nothing
Halo - Sentinels for most of it.

Honestly, I think we have too many marines. If you've ever played the level Regret from Halo 2, you'll probably know what it's like to try to keep marines alive. You get 2 marines at the beginning and, I don't know about you, but I always tried to keep them alive the whole game. In Halo 3 it's like "Oh, well he's dead. GIVE ME MOAR REINFORCEMENTS".

I'd rather have a game with smart allies that are tactical, give you support, and are rare, but that you want to keep alive.

The climbimg/doors thing would be good, but I disagree with picking up ammo. It would be too tedious and it would change gameplay.

dont get me wrong halo 3 multiplayer and forge and theater is epic, but i agree, a rlly cool, long epic campaign would be nice. i think you should also be able to switch between players in the campaign kinda like odst, xept not in flashbacks, like if its true that u play as a squad of spartans in the game, i think it would provide a nice challeng to switch roles in the game. Also, a link up between the spartans and the odsts would be awesome. i dont kno any of the halo backstory or anything like that, but in the new odst trailer, the odst leader of the squad said something about being on reach so if like halfway thru the game u switched from being spartans to odsts, that would be a rlly cool tactical change and you would have to rlly change ur approch to the game. i also think that firefight should be in reach, and that they should stop talking about the multiplayer so much because u cant make it any better than halo 3.
