Subject: H3: ODST question: UNSC presence in New Mombassa?

Golf Wang. Brony.

Please, this isn't a thread on "OMG, marine AI sux" or "they can't drive i hate them". I'm not wondering about that.

Halo 3: ODST is a game most prominently featuring, of course, the ODST's, and with most of what we've seen, it's mostly about DARE's squads romp through New Mombassa.

But what about the rest of the UNSC? The little guys, with their AR's and running around like a bunch of Grunts? Our usual cannon fodder. Where are they in all of this?

...
The place I'm curious about is the number of UNSC present during the slipspace rupture caused by Regret. I don't know alot of the finer details of Halo 2's storyline, really. I know the ship was sitting there for a long time; how long? And with that, all the marines camping down there to combat these enemies?

And of course, after the ship leaves, where there are still tons of ground forces left on the ground as war rages on throughout (and above) Earth. Regret and the MC suddenly leave; all the guys on the ground are just left there? Both human and Covenant, just to get to Delta Halo?

With all of this in mind, I'm just interested in the amount of activity left in the aftermath of the single event. In that E3 demo I saw a handful of marines sure to be there, runnin' with the ODST's, 2 hours after the drop.

...
Thoughts?

There are still Marines there, but the IAC ordering its marines back and the slipspace jump would've cut the numbers down.

But the UNSC wouldn't give a city that important up that easily, so yes, there are still Marines.

I see.

But I've always thought the slipspace jump would cause a sort of cluster-blam!- for communication for the UNSC. Is there anything in canon that is related to that thought?

Or was the event not as surprising and fast as I thought?

Imagine yourself defending a planet. You've got a large array of orbital guns, a small defense fleet, against a similar number of alien ships which are 3x as durable as your own. Your options in such a situation are going to be fairly tied up if the only ship you had available to send reinforcements to the surface was suddenly gone.

So that's it, then? No reinforcements? That is understandable, giving the circumstances you stated.

Then how much, do you think, is left on the ground?

I forgot the Covenant found humans by surprise at this point in the story, so it is still pretty light at this point (well, lighter than in Halo 3). This is interesting to me.

I love you stosh.

Wow. An intelligent, engaging thread. I'm amazed. Thank you so much for this mature conversation. Really.

Given the numbers of marines that you fight with in Halo 2 i would assume there would still be tons left.

Not only marines but what of just plain civilians too. There is no way they evacuated billions of people with the limited ships they had let alone the time it would take.

I wonder what the gun laws are in the halo universe. Surely its possible the citizens of new mombasa set up a resistance.

I'd say they'd get reinforcements whenever the Navy got break in the fighting above, but seeing as the city is still occupied by Covenant troops 6 hours after the drop, a larger counterattack must not have been organized, or was not possible.
