Subject: Silenced? I think not...

So we all know that the new SMG and auto mag are silenced, yes? But, how far does this really go? Will enemies still react if, say, you take out a grunt who is behind the rest of his group with a well placed headshot, so no-one else can see it? Will they search the area or home in on you from the sound of your gun? And most importantly, where the blam is the silenced sniper rifle? Oh come on, you know you wanted a silenced sniper rifle. Sneeper-Sniper. Fun.

Thoughts? Ideas? Pointless anecdotes? Go ahead, I'm listening.

Suppressed!!!! Silencers do not exist!

i'm hoping bungie incorporates said ideas otherwise showing off the silenced weapons all the time is just stupid

-"Two men enter, the better man leaves. The lesser man is respawning, and that's Halo."

The enemies will know where you are just like in Halo 3, look at some gameplay from campaign.

I'd rather have them rushing an shooting at me insstead of them standing there like retards, looking around trying to spot me or have them hiding somewhere.

means the same thing to most people so why care

  • 08.10.2009 2:18 AM PDT

Because the word silencer implies that the sound is completely gone. Suppressor are designed for close quarters fighting, indoors, where damage to the ears could be done from the gunshot otherwise. The loudness of a suppressed gun firing is likened to that of a car door slamming.

The Covenant would hear you.

some people like a stealthy game, and even if it does come out as that sort of game you can still go out guns blazin anyway

You could not be more wrong. Silencers do exist. They just did not use them for the SMG in Halo ODST. I work around firearms all the time, They do have very effective Silencers on a strict buyers market. As in, not available to everyone. Pretty much in the same category as Tracer Rounds.

  • 08.10.2009 3:16 AM PDT

Actually, "silencer" is just a non-technical term for a suppressor. Suppressors suppress as much sound as is possible without making the gun ineffective. For a silencer to truly exist, it would (A) have to make the bullet motionless (sound is caused by the movement of the bullet), (B) have to completely remove the sound of the expansion of gases.

I think that for the "suppressers" to be worth putting in, they need to actually work. Obviously, if you fired the gun in a crowded place you will be heard. But if there are only one or to sentries in an area, they should have less chance of hearing you as you pop one of them in the face.

EDIT: Right ok guys, enough with the suppressed vs silenced arguing. You wont win anything, and it will just turn this thread into a spam fest. Please, just get on with the discussing the implementation of silencers/suppressers in to ODST!

yeah, silencing a 50 caliber is possible in real life
/sarcasm

Suppressing one is. It just takes a VERY big suppressor. Effectively increases the length by 1 and a half times. And it's not exactly short to begin with.

Semantics.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake.
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.
And the Science gets done.
And you make a neat gun.
For the people who are still alive.

Honestly, wants the point of a silencer if it's not silenced..For looks? Nup.

In the ViDoc, you can see the Rookie taking Grunts out from the top of a building with the Silenced/Suppressed pistol, and the other Grunts and the Brute with them don't know where he is, they look around at ground level in confusion.

And don't lecture me on the whole Silenced-Suppressed thing, not everyone is a gun breathing American.

  • 08.10.2009 4:24 AM PDT

Have you actually heard a silencer in real life? You can still hear them pretty easy. Silencers are used to not alert people in the surrounding area, you can hear a silenced weapon from up to 100 metres. Guns without silencers are extremely loud, you can hear them from up to 1 to 6 kilometres.

That's why the weapons in ODST are silenced, so you don't alert all the brutes miles away

Suppressed, Silenced, what's the difference?

  • 08.10.2009 4:41 AM PDT

I'm 23, I have a house, dog, girlfriend, job and I have no interest in any fanboyism so if you're thinking about sending me a childish PM, don't be surprised when I don't call back.

The sound is supressed as in it's toned down, you hear a sound so it isn't silent therefore it's not a silencer.

Ok NRA leave the forum. Nuff said.

Anyway, the silenced/supressed/whatever weapons do appear to have an effect. Watch how some of the enemies react in confusion in the E3 walkthrough leading up to triggering the "Dutch" flashback
