Subject: An educated investigation into the banner silhouettes (Evidence)

One thread in particular keeps throwing numerous theories around with little outcome as to the Spartan identities, but here's a more educated attempt.

Far left: Will
Everything I know says it's Sam, but when Reach fell Sam had been dead for 25 years.
Reason: One thing that puts Will here is the fact that we have no physical description of Will anywhere. So he could in fact be around the same height as Sam-034, and he was regularly featured alongside John, Fred, Kelly and Linda.

2nd from left: Kelly
Reason: John grew a full head taller than Kelly and the picture shows this well. In addition she is the fastest Spartan and the frame of the silhouetted Spartan portrays an athletic and agile Spartan.

Central Spartan: John
Reason: The stance and height all seem to match our old friend the Master Chief. This gives light on the reasons why Catherine Halsey was able to tell her Spartans apart from one another.

4th from left: Fred
Reason: The figure is set slightly back from the one believed to be John which means if both were stood side by side their height would be almost identical. Both Fred and John are very similar in the novels and this also shows in the image above.
Halopedia extract on Fred's description
Fred had black hair which was shot with streaks of silver after his augmentation, and he was not too short or tall (Little shorter than John-117) and neither too muscular, nor too slim.
And we also have the combat knife.

5th from left: Linda
Reason: The main reason for this conclusion is the sniper rifle, Linda was unmatched in her proficiency with one. Perhaps Bungie have decided to have the character kneeling to hide any obvious female traits. But what we do know is that if any Spartan deserves to hold that weapon it's Linda.

Thoughts?

Great Description and reasoning behind your findings, although I believe this has been done before, props to you my friend. :)

Everything you said sounds plausible. I'm not sure about Will though. If he were that bulky, he would have been described in the books as being so.

Then there's John, he wasn't on Reach's surface and left the battle with the PoA headed to Halo.

Maybe the Spartan in the center is Fred, the one you assumed to be Fred is Will and the one of the far left is some other Spartan. Possible candidates would be Joshua, Vinh and Isaac. All are listed as MIA or KIA in the battle for Reach. Source

Why else would two new Spartan characters have been introduced in the trailer?

everyone is pretty certain it's kelly, john, fred, and linda. i'm thinking maybe will or james for the unknown one. (james got a flash cloned arm to replace the one he lost to the hunter.)

No he didn't.

  • 08.10.2009 9:40 AM PDT

The poblem with James is that he was killed when he bailed out of his Pelican. He hit the ground hard and was killed on impact.

It was suspected that his arm was flash-cloned as he saluted the Chief with his left arm - the one that he lost against the Hunter on Cote D' Azur.

And as for the Chief not being on Reach when the attack came it could simply be a case of switching roles in the game - like we did with John and the Arbiter in Halo 2.

So, the early missions against the Covenant would be from the early missions in the book, except we might switch between Fred and John through the game. This would mean that as John tackles the Covenant on the orbital platform, Fred will be engaging the Covenant on the surface. Then John makes his escape in the POA and Fred continues fighting.

I think what he meant was "James could have gotten a flash cloned arm to replace the one he lost". However, flash cloned tissue doesn't survive that long, I didn't think. =/

I agree. I had forgotten that Sam was dead. Your most likely correct.

  • 08.11.2009 12:18 AM PDT

It's only suspected that the arm was flash-cloned. There's no other way to solve the saluting issue.

Their call sign was Sierra, not Spartan. They could be anything - e.g. fire team charlie, echo 4-19. It's possible, IMO, that they were call signs for pelicans, possibly carrying spartans.

  • 08.11.2009 12:43 AM PDT

Sierra-117 was used as the callsign for the Master Chief in Halo 3. They could, however, be Spartan support elements. But that is not the issue here, the Spartans in the banner is the issue.

That's interesting, but the thing is John and Linda never drop to Reach when it get's attacked. He never gets back to Reach at all. Not until after he leaves the first Halo, that is. John, Linda, and James headed for the space dock to make sure NAV data didn't fall into the hands of the Covenant when Reach was attacked. James' Thruster Pack was shot by EVA Elites when he, John and Linda crashed into the Space Station. He flew into space uncontrollably and was presumed dead when John lost contact with him. Linda's vitals had flatlined shortly after she took a few plasma bolts when trying to leave the space station with John. (She was later revived, but that wasn't until after John had found her in cryo when he had destroyed and escaped from the first Halo) John wanted to take a dropship to Reach to retrieve the surviving Spartans (if any) after his Space Op was complete, but the planet was already being glassed by then and Captain Keyes denied his request. Maybe the Spartan in the middle is Fred since he was always second in command and lead the Ground Op when The Spartans dropped to Reach. Or maybe I'm wrong... who knows? lol. =).

Why does this disprove the theory that it is Sam? Bear in mind that we don't know when Reach will take place, whether it will cover the Spartans' whole existence or just the Battle of Reach or something else. The game could have the beginning level(s) as you playing a young spartan on one of their first missions with Innies.

The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

In Halo: Reach you may get the chance to play as more than one character, just like Halo: 2. So you could play some missions as John and others as Kelly, Fred or Linda.

  • 08.11.2009 7:17 AM PDT

I hunt for the Prophet of Contentment, the San 'Shyumm that murdered my son, and stole his birthright, his Energy Sword. They call our species Heretics. They claim to all that our tongues sting, our words a vile poison that feeds on the unworthy. I have seen the true face of Heresy. The head of a gallant warrior lay on the ground. His neck scorched and blistered, scarred by his own blade. I shall retrieve the weapon, and drive it through that bastard's heart! Punishment for his sins is nigh.

John and Linda never fought on the surface of Reach (Nor James BTW) It is actually more likely that the silhouettes are NEW Spartans, from the second wave of Spartan IIs (likely still in-training and only combat prepped because of the Covenant invasion of Reach)

  • 08.11.2009 7:21 AM PDT

Listen to what I am saying. You play as John in several different missions throughout the game, but when Reach is attacked you carryout the mission on the orbital platform with Linda.

You then switch to Reach and play as Fred.

The Pelican which brought them down was Bravo-001...

no, james had a needler round explode in his jump pack and was drifting in space and probably died during the battle of reach
