MAncannons would obviously make the player land softly so they would be unaffected.

Erm what....thats nonsense, once you clear the cannon you are on your own and land on your own accord, the cannon never has, nor is designed to control in air flight or landing. for example marines couldnt use a mancannon as it would break almost every bone on landing perhaps resulting in fatality. Its designed for Spartan use as their armor and skeletal structure can take the hit on the way down. In my opinion fall damage was in Halo:CE as it was their first halo game and they thought it would work, it was taken due to it hindering the fast flowing gameplay that is halo as we know and love it, not because the new mark VI negated the damage, altough that may have been used to add to the story i feel gameplay issues were the real reason for its depature and I would be slightly disappointed if fall damage were to return for the Spartans in reach, wouldnt stop me playing and enjoying though, not by a long shot. Great idea for ODST just not reach, in my opinion. Im not saying that I am definately right here im just putting it out there for discussion.

But they are more than just men...They are Spartans!
I still find it a bit ridiculous.

they are men and women with some nifty gadgets, they are not descendants of greek gods.

...You cant prove that Honorable Sniper, lolz.
Read...

You just proved his point for him, they are men and women with nifty gadgets.

they are not just men and women like marines, they went through intense training sinse they were six.

but that doesnt mean they do not get injured from fall damage. if a body builder that was so pumped it made your eyes bleed, would they survive jumping off a huge building, even if they had MJOLNIR armor on, the vibrations would still make you feel like @#$%.

besides, you would be injured. warthogs kill you this way. that might be the spartans main weakness, gravity and huge crap flying at you.

if we are playing as spartans then no or a nice semirealistic fall damage system would be nice cuz if I jump outta an exploding banshee and hit solid ground it would be more realistic to die (cuz the whole hit and fall at 40+mph thing) but this could take from the halo gameplay experience, but I don't want him to walk away like nothing happened. give him minor but more likely major/all damage to sheilds.

and if we aren't spartans (for reasons like class based game if it is) then that player who takes the freefall and not spartan strong then I want a nice SPLAT!

Easy fix. Have a system which differentiates between two trajectories -- a more horizontal one (0-100 degrees) and a more vertical one (101-180). On the horizontal ones you dont take fall damage (mancannons) and on the vertical ones you do take fall damage (falling off a cliff, ledge, etc.)

Didn't the spartans in fall of reach jump from a flaming pelican 5 kilometers above the surface of the planet and most survived?

correct me if im wrong....

Most of them died actually. Most of the ones that survived though had quite severe injuries.

Not true. 4 died, 4 injured, the rest, fine. Read First Strike.

only 6 were fine, the others you called "Fine" had minor injuries (or rather minor to a spartan) some had broken bones, some had fractures or internal bleeding, but Spartans can work under those conditions.

Thats what I meant, "fine" by Spartan standards.

i think this is a stupid idea and if its going to be in the game at all it should be a custom game option. fall damage ruined gow2 for me and a number of other games. it makes the game so slow paced and boring. think about it it would be like playing counterstrike1.6- its fast paced until you get in a fight with some on and if your shot first you lose because you cant move and dodge shots fast enough. another example, say your in an MLG game and your getting br'd in the back but you can turn around and strafe fast enough to stand a chance to out BR him you know because some of us better players have this ability. this sounds like a bunch of casual Halo players that put there katana on and play social with there high skill of 22 that like this idea but im sure me and my hardcore halo players will hate this idea. and for you casual gamers... cod modern warfare2 is just around the corner you guys can go play that if you want realistic gameplay

fast paced halo is pure win so please dont change bungie

Exactly! I want to worry about the enemies fire, not "Is that a 12ft drop? Oh no!"
People who are bringing up that the Spartans were injured during that drop in the pelican, THATS CUZ IT WAS IN FREAKEN SPACE! A short drop, hell even a big drop on-planet is alot different than a -blam!- orbital drop!

You will be wearing Mark V armor, like you did in Halo CE. The only reason fall damage went away was BECAUSE of Mark VI Armor.

No, you're wearing Mk. IV.

And fall damage makes sense, what is the OP talking about? So you're saying that because you're a Spartan, you can fall 200 feet with the armor taking all of the damage? I don't know how realistic that is...

  • 08.13.2009 8:33 PM PDT

There are two things on this forum that piss me off;
Idiots and group invites.
What's even worse, is that I can never seem to get away from either of them ¬_¬
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I would have been your daddy, but the dog beat me over the fence."

Finally, a guy who speaks sense.

Fall damage is stupid and if you don;t believe me, let's look at it this way:

Despite what you may think, damage is recorded by numbers. Players have a numbered health bar, we just can;t see it. So...

A bullet does 10 damage (Out of 100). Consider that this is one bullet from a BR. It is small in size and streamlined in shape allowing it to travel faster. It hit's it's target extremely quickly (I won;t go into facts, I'm too tired).

A melee attack does 40 damage. This is one attack from a Spartan. Remember Spartans have augmented strength so can deal large amounts of damage. As such, this amount of damage is somewhat reasonable.

Now, a Spartan falls off a 7 foot cliff. Considering the amount of damage that he took from a speeding bullet and an augmented super soldier, does it seem logical that he should take damage in this case, considering that he is moving slower than either the punch or the bullet.

Okay, so that example may not be perfect, but it's pretty obvious what i'm getting at. Fall damage makes no sense. But if you still want to challange me and support the idea of fall damage, then I'll be happy to provide more evidence against you. And if you still challange me then, I'll just assume you're a total idiot.

:)

Yeah, but it wasn't like in Halo 2 and 3. They survived the jump, but they only jumped because they would die if they didn't. They all got served when landing.

Well two things, the gel layer of the NEW Mark V armor, becuase that was it was at the time for S-117 and everybody, NEW (new as in, it wasnt in too much combat w/o maintenance, and no flood were trying to get into it.)

And the augmentations for the Spartans, they had some kind of reinforced bone augments which made them virtually industriable (meaning, they cant break bones or die from falling,) if you read the books, you'd know.

Uuh guys im an idiot i thought we were taliking about stoping power haha!

go ahead insult me lol!

but yes fall damage is stupid as well. while im jumping around on Valhalla i dont want to have to stand by a ledge and then think to myself "will this hurt Nepoxy? better not jump this one." and then get sniped in the back of the head by a guy staring at me for a minute asking himself "wtf is this guy doing? and why im i asking myself this question when i should be sniping him?"

theres an example of how it will slow the games pace down.

I highly doubt that, because if you did, you would know that fall damage did not slow down gameplay; in fact some maps were better with fall damage, like Hang 'Em High and Prisoner.

And about the "hardcore" and "casual level 22 katana" thing...actually, I have no comment on that.

well bungie took fall damage out for a reason.

anyways hang em high on halo 2 played out quite well without fall damage

After Halo 3, fall damage makes no sense. If the Chief can survive a two kilometer drop to earth at a speed high enough to set himself on fire, then why would he take damage from jumping off of a Scarab?

  • 08.13.2009 11:16 PM PDT

Oel ngati kameie, oe omum nga, oe ’efu nga.

i like the idea of fall damage, but only because in halo CE there was fall damage and obviously since halo: reach is before halo CE then it would mess with the story to have none.

  • 08.13.2009 11:25 PM PDT

Although falling damage should be adjusted so that it doesn't hurt as much as it did in Halo CE, you still need to understand a few things...

Older armor
+
The armor is VERY heavy
+
Shields are less resilient

= falling damage likely
