I think an ODST's most important skill is not being afraid of getting dropped out of a ship and hoping that their parachute(on the SOIEV) opens.

Just being smart and courageous. They are the backbone of the marines. They take the fight hard to the enemy and punch it right in the mouth. And they think on their feet amidst the chaos, thinking their way to take down foes. A Spartan does this too, of course, but he is more about being a sheer force, overpowering his enemy more than thinking (although a Spartan must do that too).
