1. Halo 1 was a four weapon game. Shotgun, Sniper, Rocket Launcher, and Pistol. All the other weapons were useless, but they were still good in their own way.
2. Halo 2 was a four weapon game post patch. Sniper, Rocket Launcher, Sword and Battle Rifle.
3. Halo 3 is probably the most well balanced version. SMG pwns AR at close range, AR beats out BR at close to close mid-range, BR beats out everything at medium far- range. Sniper pwns everything at far range. Shotguns are more useful than in Halo 2, but the sword actually loses out to the shotgun. Which doesn't make sense when the weapon is placed in center stage as a power weapon. Rocket Launcher is weak, but still beats everything. The only problem is that Halo 3's gameplay is significantly slower, and Bungie still uses huge open sight lines on maps with a lack of cover in between. So people are wasting an entire clip trying to take out a sniper who has an advantage out in the open, and the only options are to ping the sniper, and go hide, or rush forward, which creates a predictable pattern for the sniper to no scope.
Unfortunately, all the weapons that were moderately decent in some way in Halo 1 become duel wielding only.
