ODST is an open-world game (kind of) which allows you to roam the city for as long as you want to at night. Once you get to a clue, you start a linear mission, with checkpoints, etc.

However, what happens if you die in the city? Surely there aren't checkpoints as you walk around the place?

Another thing that hit me was the activation of skulls in Campaign. If you have to travel to the clue to trigger the mission, then surely skulls will be activated while you search for the clue to trigger said mission. Wouldn't that be slightly annoying for people playing on their first run-through?

I think you can select missions via the Campaign menu, which would make it easier to use skulls. However, so far, all I've seen is Joe Staten (sneakily) starting campaign from the main menu, so we're yet to see the campaign lobby.

The fight has been complete.... now get the cookies!

While we certainly share your enthusiasm for the return, we here at the Bungie.net community are mostly made up of snarky asses and jerks who will ridicule you for making a thread about something revealed months ago. We regret that your innocent intentions will almost certainly be replied with anger and sarcasm, and politely invite you to don your Flame-suit, because you just did the internet equivalent of jumping up the Construct lifts.

Dude, you select the flashbacks from the lobby when you unlock them. They are counted as missions.

In regard to dying in campaign, there are likely checkpoints...or perhaps waypoints would be a better description.

When you are slain, the game may have you spawn at the waypoint nearest to where you met your untimely demise.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake.
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.
And the Science gets done.
And you make a neat gun.
For the people who are still alive.

mmm. The waypoints seems alright. But you don't really have to worry, as bungie would have already of thought out this situation.

The ODST 251st

there will probably be something like every 10 min autosave or something like that (in free roam)

Hmm. I'm going to assume there's a checkpoint system similar to Halo 3's, where you trigger a checkpoint when completing a certain task. We can't be sure, but that seems quite likely.

A good suggestion. Although, I just found this video which shows the player reaching checkpoints periodically during the playthrough.

I guess we do get them.

Perhaps there are checkpoints before and after enemy conflicts. That way, if you are killed by a group of enemies, then you restart from where you were about to fight them, or if you kill them all and die later while just goofing off, then you would restart at the point after the battle.

OR it could be similar to the Halo CE level "The Silent Cartographer." If you drove the Warthog around the rim of the island in that level, you would continuously hit checkpoints.

There are checkpoints when you play as the Rookie. The first checkpoint you get is after you jump from your crashed pod.
