I have been watching some halo odst firefight videos and i realize that everytime the Odsts fire at a brute, the brute glows as if it has shields. So thinking about that what do you guys believe causes the brutes to "glow". And i am not only talking about the brute chieftains, all the brutes seem to do it.

its called power armor

  • 08.11.2009 10:10 PM PDT

They have power armor. It's like shields but doesn't regenerate.

I am a Halo 3 Failure.

I think Bungie buffed up Brute's shields a bit so they wouldn't be such pushovers.

Golf Wang. Brony.

Isn't it that their armor plating has energy shields? I think that's it.

Yeah but they never glowed like they do in the videos of Odst. I know that they have armor but this looks like the elites in halo 2.

  • 08.11.2009 10:12 PM PDT

I think bungie has just added the shield flash to the brute's armor, with no real alterations to the armor's mechanics, just to reinforce the idea that you are shooting at a mystical alien armor technology rather than just a big ape with hub caps duct taped onto him.

Here’s what Luke had to say about the differences in treatment between the Spartans and Elites in Reach:

“Instead of piece-by-piece customization like the Spartans, Elite customization is a full model swap with models selected from the various Elite classes appearing throughout the Campaign. There are all kinds of reasons for this, not the least of which is our continued emphasis on the Spartan as your identity in Reach.”

This is about ODST. The gameplay vids of Firefight make it look like the Brutes have Elite class shields.

Halo: CE Anniversary Achievement Idea
C-C-C-CANNON BREAKER!
Let Sgt. Johnson die on Halo.

I'm wondering if shooting them with the VISR on causes their power armor to flicker like shields...

Nah, I just saw a Brute get shot with the VISR off. Their armor still flickers. Strange indeed...

I know, but they have had shields since Halo 3. Not trying to insult the OP, im just saying. And it does seem like the brutes' shields look tougher.

It might have something with the VISR but i dunno, i thought it was very weird though to see the brutes shine like that.

The fact that their amor explodes after depletion leaving a familiar, shieldless, brute says otherwise.

If anything, this is just an aesthetic revision to bring the character more in line with the rest of the covenant.

  • 08.11.2009 10:43 PM PDT

Yeah, I think Bungie just shoved a jar of fire flies up of each of their butts. I think its just about looks.

  • 08.11.2009 10:43 PM PDT

The brutes always had shields. The power armor they wear has an energy shield, but once it is broken it doesn't regenerate. As for the shine, it may be something with the lighting and VISR. In low light vision modes looking at even a small light makes it look like you're staring straight into the sun, so that may be making the brute shield flash look more distinguished.

you are a good translator
Idiot can be a hard language to learn, but once you get it down, everything becomes so clear! The whole world will make sense to you.

They have sheilds over top of their power armor. It recharges as long as the power armor is intact.

What I like to think is that their armor generates the shield and the shield holds the armor together.

Death to rank junkies.

They're the same as Halo 3, they just flare up now like Elites and spartans.

just a suit of armor

With a shielding device.

Go Rams and Missouri!

The common misconception is that they do not have shields. They do have shields. However, unlike Elites, if you take out all their shields, the power armor falls off. Hit a brute with one shot, wait a bit, and his shields will fully recharge to where they were before the shot. In ODST, they just show the shields going down more.
