Subject: Bots in multiplayer

Who agrees that this is a good idea? Even if it's just for warm ups or not wanting to play matchmaking with guests but wanting to play say a 5v5.

Post your thoughts plez.

Terrible idea. Every game that includes bots in online multiplayer is usually always filled with bots and no real people. And most people fill their rooms up with bots just to get easy multiplayer achievements. Go play Unreal Tournament 3 and see how terrible of an idea bots have become in online multiplayer games

Just enjoy the damn game!
Who cares about BR vs AR

I think it should only be allowed in custom games, but as halo has levels where you have to jump across to things, it would be extremely hard to program things like that in. In flat levels, it would be ok, but levels where you could fall off, it would be very hard to keep the bot on. What about Sandbox maps as well? How could they program the bots to play on maps like that?
In custom games maybe, but defo not in matchmaking.

I've proven myself time and time again on saying that people don't have good excuses for something not to be implemented into Reach because it would be to much like a different game.
Bungie is a creative studio that could fit bot's somewhere.

and if anything they should just be for customs' and seeing as how halo doesnt have custom game achievements... it would be good.

If their were many custom game achievements, they wouldn't exactly be achievements. Anybody could get them, just have many guests, or your bot idea.

And now time to argue with you. Sorry, but if you created your own map using forge, whats to say that the bot would not just walk into the wall. Routes have to be planned for bots to run surely, and you couldnt choose what they would do. They would either miss every shot, or get headshots constantly. Plus Halo has many times where you run away, then leap over the enemies head and assasinate them. This is all you would need to beat bots, as they cant learn, then only do what they are programmed.

who say's there will still be forge? and maybe by that time there could be a better bot engine

Bots cannot learn, they are limited by their own programming. Find a way to beat the programming and you always win. Like running round a corner and Ninja, they will always fall for it.
But yes, you are right, there might not be a forge, yet I think there will: Forge v2 or something.

I said for a warm up, intending custom games, sorry if I didn't make the whole matchmaking thing clear, and also, what's wrong with it being just none forge maps? So not foundry or sandbox, I dont' see a problem with a bot on guardian as an example.

  • 08.12.2009 12:52 PM PDT

If its only for custom games I dont see why not. You could use them to practice or if you dont have live you could still play mutiplayer with the bots since you cant play online with other people.

Bungie uses matchmaking so people can't fill "rooms" with bots...

Look at Shadowrun and Gears of War 2, they are great multiplayer games and incorporate bots when someone quits in online. Or in customs you can have as many as there are allowed.

RED BRICK STUDIOS!

My point is not going to be taken well, I can already tell.
Bots take up programming. The programming can instruct bots to avoid solid objects, which is what would solve the Forge problem. Unfortunately, this causes bots to take up more space and Bungie would have to program them to avoid every object individually. Not enough space, plus map packs would become larger.
Proof: Star Wars Empire at War has coding to make AI keep units out of solid areas. It is a PC game, so the space issue is a bit lessened (two disks).
Bots can't think (like a guy up above said) but they can follow their programming. Unfortunatly, bot tactics would become unoriginal and you could start expecting what they may do (like some bots in some games just take the shortest path to kill you).
So I am against your bot idea. It would work, but it would detract from the rest of the game.

  • 08.12.2009 3:50 PM PDT

Bots would be a joke. I could go into a custom game by myself, and jog five times around the length of The Pit, and that would be the equivilant warmup of me beating a team of five bots. AI for first person shooters, especially ones like Halo which are semi-sandboxes, are terrible.

I think it would be good for custom games where you have no one to play with and you don't want to play the campaign over and over again and plus you don't have Xbox Live. Or another situtation.... You have a little cousin over that wants to play. Playing campaign with him/her frustrates you because they don't know what to do. So you just want to play an easy objective; Killing the enemy. So you go to custom games and kill bots. You see? It can be helpful lol.

Yeah, but there are so many issues. And what if the AI is a little stupid? I don't think the computer will be able to spot a sniper and know to take cover. And if it was programmed to do so, what would stop it from having eyes in the back of it's head.
Oh yeah, and ammunition. The AI would actually have to use ammunition to make it balanced.
Plus, another space using up issue: The AI would have to know if a weapon is spawned or not.

They should let a bot spawn for any game leaving retard on matchmaking, who didn't like the gamemode

The bot would have similar skill, due to enormous data preservation, including how often the player uses any weapon, how accurate he is with any weapon and how stupid he acts in any place on any map.

Groups of Idiots, who keep leaving the game, and leave you alone fighting against 5 other guys in capture the flag, would be far less annoying.

Also it would be interesting to play against your own bot.

Yeah... thats a wee bit impossible. You can't model a player using a bot. It just doesn't work.

  • 08.12.2009 5:09 PM PDT

BOOM DEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bots should fill in for missing players and you could not edit bot options.

  • 08.12.2009 5:28 PM PDT

but what if the ai/bots are programed to copy human moves so they can be more realistic
i think it would be possible to program an ai to copy evry player tactic ever invented in halo 3 mm
just by looking at films

Here’s what Luke had to say about the differences in treatment between the Spartans and Elites in Reach:

“Instead of piece-by-piece customization like the Spartans, Elite customization is a full model swap with models selected from the various Elite classes appearing throughout the Campaign. There are all kinds of reasons for this, not the least of which is our continued emphasis on the Spartan as your identity in Reach.”

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

It's not going to happen. Because then we won't bug our friends to get the game to play with us online. And we wouldn't need LIVE. And that just won't do.

  • 08.12.2009 6:24 PM PDT

i think there should be bots programmed to work on an mm map bungie has. so like if one -blam!- ditches ctf in the middle of the games you could at least have a simple bot designed to rack up a few kills so its not so hard

Hold your horses there buddy. How about if bots were placed when people quit? Or for offline multiplayer. similar to Gears of War 2
