When life gives you lemons, ferment them and get drunk.

Prolague

Dan tapped the side of his BR55 assault rifle. The pelican ride seemed like it was lasting forever. He just wanted to get in Arcadia, shoot some Aliens up, and leave. The Marine couldn't take it anymore, "How much lo-"

" Shut it soldier!" Sergeant Walter Touring growled. He wasn't a very friendly guy, and most of the Marines in Dan's Alpha Squad avoided him.

"Touchdown in twenty seconds kids!" The pelican's pilot yelled over the ship's com, "Shoot one of those bastards for me!" Adrenaline pumped through Dan's veins, the rush of war consumed him. He was ready to kill.

When the ship touched the ground, the hatch immediately opened. Unfortunately they had landed directly in front of a squadron of covenant soldiers. Plasma splashed the inside of the ship. Everyone hit the deck, Except for Dan. His rifle jammed and he was franticly pulling at its bolt.

The squadron of Elites stared at him, and began to laugh. They entered the pelican, and picked up the helpless Marines, throwing them out of the hatch. Grunts bound their wrists with energy clasps while the soldiers where on the ground. The pilot was hiding in the cockpit, but Dan was standing in the middle of the deck. An Elite raised a fist, preparing to knock the daylight out of the Marine. He dropped his rifle, and stared at the Alien, "Oh Shi-"

Part 1

Dan opened his eyes, he was in an alleyway, bound by energy cuffs at the wrists. Three Elites were watching them. The Marine looked around, and noticed he was the only one of the soldiers who was awake. One of the Covenant soldiers approached him, " Who is your commander."

"Blow me." Dan groaned. He had a raging headache, and possibly a fractured rib.

The Elite cocked his head, "Define, Blow me." The Marine burst out laughing, but was soon silenced by a punch in the face.

"Look, split lip." Dan taunted, "You aren't getting a thing out of me." The captive soldier raised his leg and quickly kicked the alien in the groin. It didn't even flinch. "Well that explains a lot."

The Elite turned to its comrades, "What does he mean?"

"Judging by human anatomy, I believe it has called you a woman." One answered.

Dan's interrogator picked him up by the throat, "Whoa big guy, take it easy. I'm just a bar tende-" The Soldier was slammed into a dumpster, dazing him, " Youl-" He began to cough, " Have to do better than that. The Elite continued to bash him into every metal object he could find.

"Enough!" An Elite roared. He had been silent, leaning against the alley wall, "He will not speak, kill him."

"But...sir, I can-"

"Silence! Spill its blood."

The inferior looked at the ground, " Yes, your majesty" The Alien drew out his plasma rifle, and trained it on Dan's head.

Dan got up from the ground, "Wait!" The Elites looked at each other. "Truce? " The aliens cackled. A loud bang echoed through the alleyway. One of the Aliens lost its head. The others franticly scanned the area, but before they could spot anything, they too were on the ground, dead. A squad of ODSTs repeled downs the alleyway walls. They got into defensive positions behind anything that could provide the least bit of cover.

One of the ODSTs looked at Dan, "You owe me what, ten?"

"Screw you, I had it under control"

"Yea, right. You were kissing that things ass Dan."

The Marine grunted, "Christ. Get your medics on my men"

"Ehem." The ODST cleared his throat, obviously waiting for something.

"Get your medics on my men, please." Dan sighed

The silver visor stared at the humiliated soldier, "That's not what I'm waiting for."

"Pretty please...with" Dan winced, " A cherry on top."

The ODST laughed, "There we go. Flint, Tinder! Check out those marines!"

Dan had a puzzled look on his face, "Flint and Tinder?"

"It's a long story."

"Oh we have plenty of timeSergeant Kelly." The Marine grinned. The ODST hated it when people called him by his last name. Most received a punch to the face, but Dan was an acceptation. After receiving no response, the Marine moved on, "Alright, what do we have here."

The sergeant took a deep breath, "Well, we have jackal snipers practically everywhere, brutes roaming the streets, grunts swarming the buildings, and a helluva lot of hunters melting my ODSTs."

"Sounds like a milk run." Dan said sarcastically.

"Dan, in truth, the only victory we have a chance at is getting our asses out of here. I've lost four squads. That's a lot of blood on my hands, okay? So I'm really guna need your help to get my men out of here."

The marine smiled, "An ODST asking for help? That's a first. I'll help you, but first"

The Sergeant knew what Dan wanted, "Help me get my men out of here, pretty please...with-"

"That's good enough, your gritting your teeth so hard I think your head might explode if you continue."

The two Soldiers heard a man scream in agony, "SNIPERS!"

Part 2

Sergeant Kelly dove onto the ground behind a dumpster. Everyone was sweeping the area. Another shot rang out. An ODST stumbled, braced himself against a wall, and dropped dead. The staccato of battle rifle fire rang out through the streets. Dan looked at Kelly, "Can I call you Steve?"

"God damn it Dan shoot your weapon!"

"Il takes that as a yes."

The Sergeant stared at Dan, "Do you know where we are meant to be shooting?"

"No." The Marine replied over the deafening cracks of human weaponry, " I figured I'd shoot wherever you did."

A carbine round sliced through the dumpster the soldiers where behind. Dan shook his fatigues as an ingot of hot metal fell into his shirt, "We're guna need a white flag." The Sergeant got up, and charged down the alleyway towards the enemy fire. Dan stared in awe, "What are you doing!" A carbine beam hit Kelly's leg, cutting flesh from bone. He cried out in pain. The ODST wasn't going to be walking anytime soon, but he saw the green flash, and knew where the little bastard was sniping from.

The Sergeant used his arms to pull himself behind a few bags of trash, groaning in pain, "The building dead ahead, third story seventh window across."

Dan went prone, and peeked around the corner of the dumpster. He moved his sites to the jackal's window, "There you are." The Marine pulled his battle rifle's trigger, and the skirmish was over. Spent brass lay all over the alley, clips wasted by shooting in every direction, hoping that the lead would nail something. "Damn I'm awesome!"

Kelly coughed as he crawled towards the marine, "If you're so awesome, then can you tell me why I only see five of your six men here."

An ODST further up the alley cleared his throat, "Looks like Sergeant swabie ate it." Dan looked at Sergeant Kelly, sadness seemed to fill his eyes.

Kelly limped to Dan, and placed a hand on his shoulder, "I'm sorry." Dan was staring at the ground. He ran his fingers through his hair, puffed out his cheeks, and let out a long breath. The other Marines were silent, mourning for their fellow soldier, or so it seemed.
One of the soldiers broke the silence, " So...he's finally dead?"

"Yea..." Another responded. Soon after every Marine present was jumping up and down, cheering. The ODSTs watched in awe.

A silver visored soldier turned to his friend, " Is this for real?"

"Don't act like you've never done this flint. "

"Screw you, you're a piece of wood."

"Yea well at least I'm not a rock...god I hate code names."

"How bout I just call ya woody then?"

"Don't push it.", Tinder knocked his friend on the side of his helmet.

"Ouch!" Flint shoved the fellow ODST, accidentally tipping him into the dumpster, "OH MAN! HAHAHA! Haha, ahhhhh. The little things in life."

While the two specialists where harassing each other, the rest of the soldiers had taped a map onto the alley's wall. Sergeant Kelly pulled out a marker while two ODSTs held him up, and drew a path through the city, "This is our highest chance of escape. In fact, it is our only chance. There's no room for slip-ups, got it? His audience replied with one loud, "YES SIR!" Kelly looked for his two specialists, " Flint, Tinder?" The ODST looked past the Marines and his squad to see two idiots rolling around in a huge metal bin of trash.

Flint was shoving Tinder's head into an especially degusting area of the dumpster, "Taste that? That's probably a three month old cheeseburger smothered in mayonnaise." Tinder tried to reply, but his voice was muffled by trash. Flint soon noticed every one of the soldiers was staring at him, "So...What's the plan?"

When life gives you lemons, ferment them and get drunk.

Just so you know, this is the same story.

Will looked around the corner, examining a group of covenant soldiers digging into the ground with an energy drill. Tom yanked him back behind the building, "Don't do that they'll see us." He whispered in an angry tone

"Tom, they are obviously looking for something important and powerful. When they dig, that's what they're digging for."

Tom grabbed wills shirt and shook him, "Do you want to die? Staying here is suicide, we have to get out of the city"

Will exhaled, "Don't you want to be a hero?"

"Yes but I don't want to be an incinerated hero. I'm fifteen, I have a long life ahead of me."

"I am too, but you don't see me pissing my pants."

"Look Tom, all we have to do is figure out what they are digging for, and report it to the UNSC. We could save a whole planet."

"Or we could die and the planet blows up anyway." Will looked around the corner of the building again, the covenant had already drilled deep within the earth.

"Tom, I'm guna get a closer look." The boy left his hiding spot, and crawled behind a pile of rubble close by. He checked to see if any of the alien bastards was looking, and then quickly moved behind a vacant wraith hovering in the middle of the street. As he leaned against the purple metal of the covenant craft, he got a better idea. It was ridiculous, insane, and amazingly fun.

Will crept up the side of the Wraith, and hopped inside the open porthole. A jackal caught it out of the corner of his eye, and began moving towards the alien vehicle. When Will entered the tank, he saw that the thing wasn't as empty as he thought.

A Grunt was staring at him from the pilot seat. Before it could yell, will grabbed its neck, and tore off the little suckers methane mask. It thrashed around for a few seconds, and then stopped moving. Will took its plasma pistol and stuck it in his belt. He slowly closed the hatch. When it sealed it made a large clank. He heard a jackal screech, and plasma splashed the Wraiths purple hull.

Will looked at the Wraith's control panel, confused. Then, for an odd reason that he didn't understand, he knew what to do. When he placed his hands on the panel, he began to move forward. He clicked a button that he felt would give the thing a boost, and it did. The chunk of metal wrecked the closest jackal, and mowed down some other Covenant bastards as well. He fired plasma turrets at the rest of them. Soon there were smoldering corpses littering the street. Tom stood in the middle of the road, jaw open, amazed. Will jumped out of the Wraith, and sat on the top of it, satisfied.

"Will...how the hell did you do that?"

"Honestly, I have no idea."

Tom looked around the area, "Well we should get movi-" A carbine beam sliced through his chest, cutting his heart in two. during the last few seconds he had left, he stared at Will, his best friend, his only friend. The boy dropped to his knees, and fell forward. His face was scratched by the cold street. He lay there, lifeless, just a child. Will ran to him, praying that his friend was still alive.

"Tom let's go!" Will shook the boy's body, believing that he was still alive, but Will was only lying to himself. " Tom we have to g-" Another carbine round flew through the air. The killer nicked Will's rib cage, carbonizing bone. He yelped in pain, and dropped to the ground. Will knew he was going to die. He didn't care at all. He had nothing left. Every bit of his family was dead, and Tom had just joined their ranks.

Will heard the crack of a sniper rifle, then the screech of a jackal. He didn't see the bastard fall out of the window of a building behind him, but he sure as hell heard it hit the roof of the taxi cab. The last thing will heard before he blacked out was the pattering of combat boots.

When life gives you lemons, ferment them and get drunk.

The group of ODSTs and Marines rand towards the two children on the ground. " Holy sh-" One of the black armored soldiers yelled as he ran ahead of the others.

Sergeant Kelly was shocked by the lack of discipline his soldier was displaying, "Trevor! Where the hell do you think you're going?"

"It's my son sir! It's my son! He's alive! Thank god." The rest of the ODSTs watched him in awe, he had never shown any emotion like this before, "Tom I found you, I thought you were-"When the ODST kneeled down do his child, he saw that his boy was laying in a pool of blood. A drop of the red liquid dripped from the corner of his mouth.

Trevor stared the exit wound of the carbine beam on his son's back. The skin was charred, releasing a sickenig smell. "No...no...NO!" Tinder placed a hand on Trevor's shoulder, "Get off me!" The heartbroken ODST pulled his helmet off and threw it through the air. He turned Tom onto his back, and there he saw where the plasma had hit him, straight through the chest plate.

Trevor was sobbing. Flint joined Tinder in the attempt to get him off the ground, but again he resisted. Two additional ODSTs approached. The four soldiers grabbed Trevor and began to pull him away from his son. "Let me go!" The ODSTs continued to drag him from his son, "I said get your god damn hands off me!" The ODST brought his elbow into Tinder's stomach. He let out a loud humph, and dropped to the ash fault. Trevor brought his foot up and hit another ODST in the groin.

Sergeant Kelly had run out of patience, "Trevor stand down!" The ODST continued struggling, "Damn it Trevor stand down that's an order!" He didn't acknowledge Kelly's orders at all. Instead, the soldier continued to fight the men attempting to restrain him. An ODST reached for him, Trevor evaded his grasp, and snapped the man's arm like a twig. He cried out in pain. Flint and Tinder were back on him, they had Trevor's arms, but he kicked the ground and thrashed like a caged animal. A gunshot echoed through the streets. Everyone stopped moving. Flint looked at himself, trying to see if he had been shot, but at that moment, Trevor went limp. The ODSTs released him, and he fell to the ground, dead.

Sergeant Steve Kelly had his arm extended. A magnum was in his hands, the crosshairs aimed where Trevor had taken his last breath. Silence filled the air. The Marine squad was staring at Trevor's corpse in awe. Even the ODSTs felt disturbed. They had seen everything. Organs where they shouldn't be, squad mates killed in front of them, but a human killing another human, and in this circumstance...It was something totally different.

Sergeant Kelly did what he was trained to do. If a soldier becomes a danger to the squad, he might as well be a Covenant, but that didn't change anything. "Grab the unconscious one and let's move, it's a miracle we haven't been shot." The bodies of Trevor and Tom were left b/ehind, there was no time for mourning, only time to run.
