If firefight is anything like horde in Gears of War 2 i should excel in it because i am very good in horde. But i have been hearing doing firefight on heroic difficulty is really hard.

Here’s what Luke had to say about the differences in treatment between the Spartans and Elites in Reach:

“Instead of piece-by-piece customization like the Spartans, Elite customization is a full model swap with models selected from the various Elite classes appearing throughout the Campaign. There are all kinds of reasons for this, not the least of which is our continued emphasis on the Spartan as your identity in Reach.”

Take out Grunts first. If you focus on Brutes, they take longer to kill and the whole time plasma grenades are raining down on you from the hundreds of grunts.

Here is one for map knowledge. If a map has a day version of it go on that first, so you know where your going instead of wandering around helplessly.

I would like to point out that while chieftans are cheating -blam!-es, there is a way around their "unstickability". it comes in very handy on legendary and has saved my ass a few times. when they charge you, or if you aim well enough, stick their hammer, turret, or fuel rod gun with a normal plasma or spike grenade. it will count as a normal stick, and they will fall in one hit, (unless they activated invincibilty, if you try this then your just stupid. otherwise, a handy tip. hope you add it to your guide!

Gold/Mandatory Skulls:

Iron- "Respawning is disabled. Be careful!" When Iron comes on, respawning is disabled until the end of the round. So don't take unnecessary risks, don't split off from the group, don't be stupid. Or you'll be waiting for a long time on flying cam, unable to help your teammates avoid the same fate.

Tough Luck- "Enemies always evade danger." This is the first skull that comes on. It's going to make it harder to score kills with grenades, needles, and plasma pistols. So focus on using those weapons only when the enemy has little room to dodge.

Catch- "Enemies love to throw grenades" This means that there will be a downpour of explosives aimed at you at all times. It also means that you need to prioritize enemies. Starting with Grunts. Then look to supress Brutes. Jackals, Drones, and Hunters can't throw grenades, so you don't have to worry about them anymore than you already do.

Black Eye- "Melee to recharge stamina." This one is a tremendous pain. You must pick your fights very carefully, making excellent use of cover. When you do get damaged, the only way to recover is by melee. This does NOT mean that you should go charge a brute when your stamina gets low. It means you should diminish the enemy force and bash the first grunt or jackal that comes close enough. I want to re-emphasize the importance of cover whenever drones come out.

Tilt- "Enemy shields deflect bullets." Break out the plasma weapons. PP and BPR are your close personal friends now. Well, they already should be, but now they are friends with benefits.

Famine- "Enemies drop low ammo weapons" Remember what I just said about plasma weapons being your friends with benefits. Now they're your buddy that slept with your girlfriend/sister. Deal with them when it's particularly necessary, but move on as quick as possible. There will always be more where they came from.

Mythic- "Enemies have 2X health." There's not much to say here. It's important to remember that an unshielded head shot is still a one shot kill.
_____________________________________________________________ ___________

Silver/Optional Skulls:

Blind- It takes away your hud, your ability to see your gun, everything. If you're the type of challenge junkie/ Mythic player that would actually enable this skull, then you already know all of the strategies for playing blind.

Cowbell(Or Sputnik, I've heard they're bringing back the H2 name)- Increases the physics on explosions. Larger force. Enable for the lulz, unless of course you are using...

Grunt Birthday Party- This makes grunt heads explode into confetti. This explosion can damage surrounding enemies. So increasing the force of the explosion (cough*cowbell*cough) would be a good idea.

IWHBYD- But a dog beat me over the fence. You know the deal.

Thank God I'm an atheist.

This is a great guide but what happens to the tactics when a skull/skulls is/are activated? Like the one where you must melee enemies to regain stamina; teams will need to use more cover and take small bursts when enemies are caught reloading or something to avoid being shot and losing stamina. People will probably improvise as they play anyway but a few tips could be helpful

But there's no sense crying over every mistake.
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.
And the Science gets done.
And you make a neat gun.
For the people who are still alive.

Nice guide! Don't forget hiding out in bunkers :D

dude hiding in firefight is suicide

Really? I thought it would be easy if you could just hide in that little hole in Crater Night. (The place where you start in)

Nar, bungie stated that the enemy will "always" be hunting you down. No matter what. Imagine being stuck in a room with two enemy hunters blocking the only exit? Good luck! Or, if a brute lobs in a spike granade then fades out of view. Your whole squad is most likely to get annihilated by the spikes. Same goes for grunts with plasma granades.

You've never used it in Halo 1, 2, or 3?

Warthog

When used correctly, this vehicle has great potential, it can take out enemies in no time. It is fast, easily maneuverable and it has a powerful weapon, the turret.
Make sure you destroyed all the enemy vehicles before using this epic vehicle though.

Hmm. Pancakes are good, huh?

Hey just a question, does ODST have like random live groups? Like matchmaking in halo 3, you say I want to play a firefight match, get paired up with a random 3 other people, veto or accept a map, vote on a difficulty ect? or is it only friend enabled? I just feel that ODST would lose tons of popularity if it only works like custom games, to to mention gamers like me who only add friend they know in real life to xbox live, and I only know 2 that are getting the game when it comes out :(

by the way, awesome guide!

This is a very nice guide, the game isn't even out and we have analyzed the crap out of how to play good in Firefight. O and the Chopper can be used, check the new hotness post again, one of the pictures shows a list of weapons used to kill and the chopper is on the top (it's right below the Drilling Down header).

Few things:
- Take out the grunts and jackals first. One to two shots with the Auto-Mag and they're gone. Three brutes are easier to dodge than fifteen grunts/jackals. They're the first group to attack anyway.

- Only use the Auto-Mag for headshots. There isn't a lot of ammo for it, but it's more accurate than a BR and can plow through vulnerable enemies.

- Brute Chieftains with Fuel Rods have incredible aim. The best idea is to get close, if possible, and beat them down. They can't shoot if you're too close. Just don't jump or stay in the open. They'll get you.

- Crouch. Hide. Run to cover. As the skulls pile on you'll be dying almost instantly if you aren't careful.

- Once you get Black Eye your shields are as good as useless. Only melee something if they get close. Otherwise find something to hide behind and take on the brutes one at a time.

''Just call this a hazing.
If you gave me just a pistol.
Then I'll make it look amazing.''

If you just got a Chieftan Round and the Black Eye skull kicks in , grab a Gravity Hammer !
Melee Weapons count as a Melee , helped great in Halo 3 Campaign and I hope it will work in Halo 3 : ODST :).

Remember to use your visr!!! even at daytime a dark building will provide an excellent spot to hold out! But remember brutes are attracted to the smell of testosterome!
