Yep, and it's even an achievement to disable a vehicle and quickly kill the driver.

Engineers - These poor creatures are now Covenant bombs, and moving shield generators. Take them out ASAP, or you'll find your enemies have more shielding than before. Kill them over a group of Covenant, and they will fall onto them, creating a nice explosion, and helping calm the Covenant assault. From gameplay videos around the net, it appears that they have a lack of a headshot-spot, so you'll likely have to spray and pray. Drain their shields with Plasma, and finish them.

A single overcharged plasma pistol shot will kill these. After getting hit they'll float upwards for a few seconds then explode. No need to waste valuable ammo.

Secondary tactics to keep in mind to get the most out of your weapons isn't just a good idea, it can completely change how you use some weapons in Campaign, Firefight, and even Halo 3 multiplayer. This venerable tactic is almost never used, but I swear to god, you put it to good use, you'll learn that even the MA5C and the M7 have their advantages. Short, controlled bursts completely change up the ranges you can use certain weapons. If your reticle is covering the enemy completely, and not splashing over too much, you can shoot, accurately, in short bursts no matter the weapon. Aside from that, Plasma Rifles and Pistols can put rounds down range surprisingly accurately, if you take into account how slow the shots travel. Plasma rounds are slow enough, no matter the weapon, to be easily dodged while charging towards the enemy. ...Now, then, it would be absolutely lovely if someone could direct me to a forum post regarding the Classic Achievement. I swear to god, that mother-blam!- who said, "I bet you're stupid enough to try beating ODST on Legendary only using Melee" should die. Make note, that was abridged quote.

Just play the mission Uplift Reserve. It's the vehicle oriented one. Get in the hog, grab some marines, and let them do your shooting for you. Just don't honk your horn - it'll glitch the achievement. Give your pasenger your laser. It's a cake-walk.

i wonder if aanyones got to the 4th set on heroic yet its -blam!- tuff any one want to try my gt is das zerst0rer

Lost Platoon is by far the easiest (if you're at least half-decent with a chopper). Dedicate one person to laser wraiths, 2 in the hog, and another doing whatever he can. Use the hog to kill the drivers of choppers until you can get everyone but your laser guy in them (and even him as long as he knows what he's doing). Once you get 3/4 choppers up, it's brain-numbingly simple. Only gets difficult when black-eye turns on, but then you just have to work together to isolate jackals or grunts whenever someone needs stamina. A good spot to laser from is the elevated circular section you'd enter the area at in campaign. Enemies rarely travel up there and you can see both wraiths.

My friends and I just got the achievement using this tactic, and at one point we had 32(!!!) extra lives. It only ended because someone needed to get off and we all ran around purposely dying.

PS: Leave your choppers somewhere once the bonus round starts. Dying might be OK, but having your vehicle destroyed isn't.

In my opinion, The only way to kill hunters is to stick them 1 blue stick grenade or 2 brute stick grenande will take the down.

Thanks that really helps even though I don't have ODST yet It has gotta help but anyways I'll be getting it next week if someone wants to play.

warrior's tip of the week: on construct if you stand by the central grav lift, and throw a gernade straight up, it will blow the sniper into your hands, For all the people who kicked my....hayabusha armor with this

nvm i was replying to the dude who said hiding was a good idea
i tried that then a stealth brute spawn camped the mess out of me

just to give perspective, ive been playing legendary/heroic difficulty.

i have quite a differing opinion on a few points. firstly i find the two easiest ways to take down a brute are;

needlers- which are vast in quantity thanks to grunts and jackals

&

PP+carbine/magnum- again if the magnum isnt available there is always carbine ammo

now wraith tanks, plasma pistol is one of the best ways to easily take one down. once immobilised you can a) PP the gunners shields, take him out with a magnum then board OR b) immobilise and spam projectiles like rockets/grenades/fuel rod.

i find taking hunters out is definately an interesting challenge. if i am out of anything such as a rocket launcher or fuel rod, i find overwhelming it by giving it too many targets fairly successful. it will swing at random allowing atleast 2 of the 4 players a chance to shoot. however this is assuming everyone is together and there are no other threats, something that rarely happens.

i tend to back pedal whilst hucking grenades, exposed flesh from the damage allows my team mate/s to shoot its weak spot for massive damage

just my opinion, feel free to oppose so long as it isnt backed up    :)

If you don't stand behind our troops--
--Feel free to stand in front of them

Just so you know, it IS possible to stick brute chieftans. You have to hit their WEAPON. The hammer brutes are easy but fuel rod and turret brutes, not so much.

  • 09.24.2009 9:54 PM PDT

Trogdor Rules

I've had a few lucky sticks on the cheiftan's weapons so there is that. Also you can go ninja and assassinate them.

Edit:Darn you pure skylls that's what I just said. Oh well that's what I get for not reading the last post.

good guide, but you forgot one thing: banshees. i forget which map, but one has a banshee spawn every wave. I usually use rockets but dont always have the ammo. an if i dont dispatch them they become a pain in the butt. what should be my option #2? And another question, turrets defend and dont detach? or detatch and stay mobile or find a better defensive position? just message my account or post here on forum so everyone can see. But otherwise your guide is very helpful. thanks, my gamertag is HOBO HAVOC (all caps) i'm on a lot i'll play whenever.

Stupidity, when sufficiently advanced, is indistinguishable from magic

don't forget- one plasma burst takes out an engineer

can we expect a matchmaking for firefight game modes? or will we have to rely solely on friends and recent players.... poor judgement on bungie's part. i'm thinking some developers just wanted to hastily put a game on the market? hmmmmmm. without some much needed updates this game will lose its fan base fast.
can we expect other matchmaking variants to? such as classics like ctf, btb and deathmatch? share the love bungie! i'm not waiting over a year for HALO: Reach for some new matchmaking, and i'm sure im not the only person with an opinion similar to this...

I am not sure about heroic and legendary, but on normal a sniper or beam rifle shot to the back flesh of a Hunter=kill

easy way to kill em fast

Cool Guide! Thanks for posting, and thanks everyone for the tips!

My minor contributions:

* If you are in a bind with several Brutes, chuck a Plasma grenade at the feet of one Brute (make sure it sticks and isn't on the ground). The Brute will panic and run, and the other Brutes will back away. This should leave you an opening to make a run for higher ground or a less crowded spot on the map.

* Needler fun: If you are facing a cluster of enemies ( especially ones who are using the Catch skull to throw plasma grenades at you), grab a needler and spray one of the group. Ideally you want to hit someone with an active grenade, so they drop it for a group-killing explosion. No matter what though, they will scatter a little when the needles start popping. Use this split second to pop headshots with an automag or toss a pineapple their way.

NOTE: Don't use against armored Chieftains or Hunters. It just cheeses them off.

* Sight and Sound: If you hear a Brute but don't see it, switch to VISR immediately. They might be in stealth.

Spike grenades work wonders, but you have to risk your life by getting close and taunt them to melee you. When they stretch their arms out, stick them with a Spike in the chest or groin, then runnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn.

Thank you sir, that was an epic rendition of this topic.

and how!

This needs to be added to the Engineer section.

Engineers
Their armor and shielding prevents most weapons from being at all effective. The two most quick and effective weapons against them are the Plasma Pistol and "sticky" grenades.

The Plasma Pistol is preferable because you simply need to hold down the trigger, wait for your lock confirmation, and fire. The EMP pulse from a single overcharge will cause the explosives mounted to the Engineer to go off, killing it and possibly a few covenant or even you if you're not careful.

"Sticky" grenades will also take out Engineers in one go, but they are only advised if you are within about 20 feet of your target. Since ODSTs aren't capable of the "baseball pitch" grenade toss of a Spartan, when you throw a grenade it has a considerable amount of lob to it, so make sure you place your firearm's crosshair UNDERNEATH the Engineer. Don't forget to take into account if it is moving or not.

The Halo 3 Martyrdom

My friend usually deals with War Chieftains by getting close to them while avoiding the Fuel Rod blasts. He waits until the Chieftain uses a melee attack, and then he quickly jumps around the back and assassinates them. War Chieftains are the gold guys carrying a Fuel Rod. Only try this if you know you can pull it off 90% of the time and if you are desperate, because the melee damage done by these guys are horrific and can often kill you in one hit.

Great post! I plan on doing the 200 000 point Firefight achievements myself (too laggy with other people) and I needed the tips so I can increase my average life time as well as learn how to avoid getting completely overwhelmed by myself. I'll be sure to check back here often if there are any updates.

Very nice writeup. It seems you say things such as "It will take about 6 SMG rounds to kill a drone", but that obviously varies on difficulty.

Choppers can be used (you say it's unconfirmed as of right now).

"Chieftains - By the time you get to these bad boys, you'll need to use whatever you have left. Your ammo reserves ill be very low, so take it carefully. Fire off a few bursts from the SMG or any weapon that has lots of ammo, and the Chieftains will, or should, turn on their invincibility generators. Then, all you can do is run. Once they're out, use any quick-fire weapon to fell their armour, followed by a Magnum round to the face."

Or just use a charged plasma pistol then about 3 shots from the magnum directly to the head.

Be not afraid of greatness; some are born great, some achieve greatness, and others have greatness thrust upon them.

what levels in firefight do engineers appear on??
