When reading this weeks news Five Years of Halo! on bungie.net it remided of something and I was wondering what you people were thinking when you heard that MS was buying Bungie a few ears ago. What were your feelings then and what are they now?

Well MS buying Bungie gave Bungie more access to some resources, like extra game testers or programmers etc. from MS, it also gave them more funds, scince Halo is probably one of the only reasons the X-box survived, MS will give Bungie more money to make Halo 2 the best it can possibly be.

  • 07.22.2004 10:04 AM PDT

Halo probably wouldn't be what it is without Microsoft. However, Bungie lost Myth and Oni in the process. So it depends on what you care more about.

I was annoyed that MS bought Bungie, but I think it was for the
best. Bungie probably needed more funds to get Halo out the
door, but the side effect was a rushed game. (Still the best game
around) I followed Halo since it was first announced and I've
been going back in time, playing Marathon and I'm in the
process of getting my hands on the Myth series. I played the
Myth II demo and it still rocks.
Anyway, MS helped Bungie, Bungie helped MS, and we get
Halo. I have no problem with it, but I'm curious to know how the
Bungie employees feel about it, but they might have to keep
a lid on that.

Well, they didn't just lose Myth and Oni. They lost about half of their oldest and most dedicated fanbase - Mac users - because they made what is seen as basically a pact with the devil. People complain that the Disembodied Soul no longer inhabits the forums. Bungie sold their soul years ago!

But I stuck by them, and although Halo wasn't up to their usual standards, here's hoping Halo 2 brings a little redemption. :)

But Halo was still sold on the Mac.

Yeah, like 3 years later. :)

Look at this for the gist of the response by the Mac gaming community. Oh, and This. And this (watch for falling irony there).

Well, as a Bungie fan from the good ol' Mac days of PiD and Marathon, I can't think of many good things to say about it. One good thing is that it does give Bungie a gargantuan marketing and publishing budget to work with.

I wont even begin to list the bad things.

That said, whatever furthers Bungie's ultimate goal of world domination is fine by me.

I hate Microsoft. When Halo was in development for !!!PC!!! Microsoft bought Bungie. Since Xbox couldn't compete with PS2 They decided that it would be a good idea to cancel the develpment towards PC and convert it to Xbox. Well after the release Microsoft was scared to release it for the PC because "Halo had much more impact if it had the title "Xbox exclusive" so the Xbox name had a better rep." 2 YEARS LATER they finally gave permission to Gearbox to release for PC they transfered it which took minimal of time. The same will happen to Halo 2. They want Xbox to rise and shine so they can "try" to bring down Sony...Which will never happen and they should stop trying.

It'd be impossible for me to forgive Microsoft =-(

As you probably already know, Bungie lost the rights to Myth when Microsoft bought it out. Unfortunatly, the multiplayer in Myth ran off of a bungie.net server. So when Bungie lost the rights, so did Myth lose its' multiplayer. And beleive me, this was a devestating blow to many people. Myth was the game you would come home and play every night because as soon as you logged on you'd find yourself with people you knew very well, the feeling you would get if you walked into a room of old friends. This is why the Myth community is so great.

however when the bungie.net server went down, and later the playmyth.net server came up, few players seemed to return. Nowadays the number of players is small, about 80-100 whenever you log on. However, these people represent the finest of the Myth community, grizzled veterans that have seen it all. Unfortunatly a few of these people are complete asswipes. But still this community is as good as it gets.

However, no matter how brilliant the community still is, I lost a lot of good friends when the Bungie.net server went down. I doubt I could forgive microsoft for that. Since then I've made some better friends, but have seen even more leave. Some leave with a big going away speech, a retiring-from-myth night where everyone plays all night long. Some just dissepear, one day you'll be on and be like..."Wait a minute. Where the hell is Rings I haven't seen him in ages".

-blam!- YOU MICROSOFT =-(

Must pass on the hate for Microsoft!!! I mean Im proud that Bungie got enough and a surplus of money to complete and make Halo 2 but to what cost? I mean Halo 2 is an XBOX EXCLUSIVE. An Xbox is a PC. Why not release both Xbox and PC versions at the same time (they easily could)? Because Microsoft thinks that they can beat the PS2 with an Xbox exclusive. Halo put Xbox on the map but it can never beat the PS2 and they should stop trying and release Halo 2 Multi-Platformed!!!

  • 07.24.2004 8:42 AM PDT

An Xbox isn't a PC. There are a number of coding differences between both platforms. Hence the development of XNA.
And actually the Xbox has succeeded. I was looking at a poll of the platforms in CVG, and Xbox is top.

Microsoft can beat the PS2, because the Xbox is a more powerful gaming platform.

Maybe. But I prefer the ability to form a coherent thought and spell the words 'you' or 'boy' correctly to any video game.

Except maybe Halo 2...

I have to agree with what Regienko said ;-)

And MegaRoll... you may want to rethink grade 1-5 spelling... you may work out why you failed. Nobody wants to hear it, this isn't the place to be complaining about platforms, this is for bungie and thats it!

XBOX is a PC true, but the core coding for a Winblows OS and the XBox are a bit different. The hardware and the core instruction sets are in most respects the same on an XBox or that 2nd hand used compact you picked up for $50 dollars. The difference is in how the data is processed and coded and the XBox uses special crap for that. In translation no it wouldn't take much more time to get the code up to spec for the PC and Mac OS X because high level code can be ported to both just the core instruction sets are different between a CISC and RISC chip. I really wish MS would release it for PC also, I'd hate to see how bad it would run if gearbox did the port, because they really screwed halo pc. to play halo pc as smooth as the XBox you need one heck of a video card and PC. With a lot of the core code of the game remaining the same, it is a fact they screwed the instruction set in port, I mean come on a 733P3 with a 64MB video chip set plays smoother than a modest pc with say a 2GHz and 512MB and 128MB card, standard "best buy" pc. Come on -blam!-box not everyone wants to spend 400 dollars for a 9800XT or 5900.

The fact is now bungie may come up with the game and get all the code going, but Microsoft does all the marketing and other business crap that companies have to do to make money. And in the end it is some guys choice over at Microsoft who does the port if there even is one. I think they should keep it in House and have Bungie do it for both the PC and Mac at least Bungie can code a hell of a lot better than -blam!-box.

Remember that the XBox has a special graphics chip which does most of the work, whereas on PCs the CPU does most of it.

To Devon: Since when does hardware make a good game? What if Xbox has better hardware? Xbox has like 1/10 of good games that PS2 has which makes playing PS2 "funner".

To Durandal: Go screw yourself. You obviously understood me so why didnt you make a comback and say like, "Hey Xbox has these good games (enter the 2 good games here)."

To n00b hump: Very smart! I would rather have a PC version than none at all. So if GearBox messed it up so the fawk what?

To Bob: The Xbox's video card is like $50....

GTA is a British game. But this isn't a thread abot the Xbox.

Oops, yeah GTA is from Rockstar North located in Europe. Yes, this thread is not about Xbox its about Microsoft. Microsoft sucks. They shouldnt buy companies out to support Xbox. They cannot beat Sony in the console race so they should stop trying. Most of all... Microsoft's (still on the topic) Xbox suck.

  • 07.25.2004 6:56 PM PDT

Read my first statement and then tell me that Microsoft sucks. I'll even extend it:

The new hotness probably wouldn't have happened. Halo 2 certainly wouldn't be a Live game (and may not even have been started) and therefore cool Live features wouldn't be included on b.net. The Xbox tunnel programs would probably also not exist, since it was Halo that first drove that lone GameSpy programmer to create GameSpy Tunnel.

MegaRoll, first of all, this isn't Sony vs Microsoft. This is about Microsoft buying Bungie. Second of all, Microsoft can beat Sony because they own Bungie, and Bungie makes games that rule.

Goweb, There wouldn't be the New Hotness, and there would be no Live, but there would be the Bungie.net servers.
