I like how with each release of map packs, they get better.
I don't. They should have all been equal, or similar, in quality. I don't want one map pack that's bad, then one in between good and bad, then one that's decent, then one that's awesome. They should all be awesome.
They all are. They get more and more awesome.
Well, it's a matter of opinion.
I always wanted a small symmetric map in Halo 3, and the Heroic Map Pack didn't deliver. Slayer on Rat's Nest is very boring, but it plays Objectives nicely. I don't really like Standoff, as it's got massive spawn issues. Defualt Foundry has terrible spawns. And that big crane doesn't help when I'm trying to forge. The slanted walls don't help either, as it forces you to geomerge everything if you want a clean surface. Quite frankly, that's discouraging. The small confines also limited the amount of maps that could be made (when compared to Sandbox), and everytime I attempted to create a map, I had to block off one side of the entire map. Heroic only gave me Rat's Nest.
Again, the Legendary Maps didn't quench my thirst for a small symmetric map. When compared to Snowbound, Epitaph and Isolation, Blackout was much better. However, it wasn't a completely accurate remake. I only like FFAs on Blackout, as it plays it decently, but I prefer 4v4 combat than FFA or 8v8. Ghost Town isn't bad, but One Flag games usually end up being tied, as playing Defense is pretty hard on that map. It plays Slayer nicely, but there's a lot of camping and some of the geometry will impede my movement, or I'll lose a grenade in a crack. Avalanche was the best map there, but again, I prefer 4v4s, not 8v8s. It was a step better better than Heroic, which I appreciate, but it wasn't something I totally wanted. I actually held up from buying it for a few months, because I didn't want it.
The Mythic maps finally gave me what I wanted. Assembly became my favourite map in Halo 3, but the other maps weren't quite as good, IMO. Orbital plays Slayer much better than Objective. Objectives are really sluggish on Orbital,as the average Multi Flag or Neutral Assualt game on that map will be at least 12 minutes. And Slayer gets boring quickly. Default Sandbox is terrible, as it was a smaller Standoff. Spawns suck, and once the enemy 'Hogs drive out in the dunes, the only effective counter to them is the Chopper. However, Sandbox's forging capabilities balanced out the terrible gameplay, at least for me.
IMO, they aren't all awesome.
