Here's what I think.
Again I have the Long version and the short version
Long Version:
Weapons
I agree that buying weapons is not a halo-isque type thing to do because bungie's sole purpose for weapons was to be found on the map and players fight for the weapon, therefore fighting for map control as well. However I think that since this gametype has a much bigger picture in mind with a huger objective... weapon purchasing could work. The idea of campaign scoring built into multiplayer through medals and kills is genius.
It is not unbalanced at all if you think about how you are buying it.. u use points that you earn and so that really motivates players to actually work to get all the crazy medals for point multipliers and such. Its a good plan... but I do disagree with the weapon caches though.. weapons should simply not be on the cruisers.. that would solve all the problems with the time and camping people may do on their cruisers. Weapons should simply be dropped down from orbit in weapon pods such as the one in halo 2 and the ones in halo 3 sandtrap. I'll get to how they can be called down to your position in just a minute... but think about it.. once the weapons are on the ground, they are fair game for nebody to use. You cud use it, ure teammates could, or even ure enemies. So the old bungie factor of rushing to the weapons still apply.. exept now u can choose to get the weapons in different positions of the map.
Vehicles
Vehicles would work the same way.. however judging by the fact that vehicles would cost more and is also intended for more than one player.. i say that more than one player can contribute to buying a vehicle. I say make a list that comes up on screen when u press and hold a button (ill tell u wat buttons soon) the list should look like the score screen when u press back. The list would have three columns. One is vehicle name, second is vehicle purchasing points needed, and third is how much points it currently has contributed to it.. Get it? it means that players can choose to get a gauss warthog, but since it costs too much to get by ureself unless ure on a 20 kill-streak, u can talk with other players to pool in ure points to get that warthog.. and in the end, you all will be usin it for the team.. (warthog does require more than one player so it would be fitting if more than one player pools their points)
HEV respawns/reinforcements?
The helljumping (a.k.a droppin hot from high orbit to ground) is a brilliant idea, as ive said before a couple o times.. But i disagree with players having to drop via HEVs everytime they die. I think that it would reduce the flow of the game and people would have to wait longer.. and seeing how the game would need to have up to 200 kills to go to the next stage.. it means you would have to wait for 200 drops to reach that stage.. (of cource u can start early and shoot the HEVs in air.. but wudnt it be funny if one went of cource and splattered you?) neways, my point is to introduce dropping in the very beginning of the game and after you have landed and died, u respawn in a base on the map. Now heres the catch, the flow would not at all be taken away in this case, but u can also have some Orbital dropping action peppered throughout the game: The third way to use ure points is to call in reinforcements, This would make a person who is dead and in black screen ready to respawn, get a message saying you are the reinforcement (of cource the players who get the message are random) and these people would have to wait an extra longer to respawn inside one of maybe 4-5 HEV pods ready to land beside the one who called in reinforcements. People already do this in halo games indirectly.. if their teammates are dead in MLG, the last guy can wait by a certain area to make their teammates spawn in that general area... in this game mode, you use ure points to make ure teammates spawn in the general area.. beside you. get it?
Squads
The last impediment (i know, big word o.O) to the flow of the game is the communication and coordination of teammates. This can easily be solved by squads. Since the OP was kind of enuf to choose a perfect number of 20 v. 20, the squads should be of 5 players each makin 4 squads per team. 5 players cuz... thats wat the banner says ^^. A squad leader would be randomly designated and he can communicate with other squad leaders... sound familiar? of cource, since it is the direct idea taken out of the Book that this game is being made for (thats right, in the Fall of Reach, they had different squads, green team, blue team, etc with leaders able to switch COM lines to talk to different squad leaders and coordinate en masse. Of cource, if the squad leader is a douche, then the 4 other players in that squad can veto the squad leader out to assign one of them as the new leader
Finale (Short Version:)
As you can see, ive organized and placed the ideas into four different categories triggered by four different buttons.. ... Now.. hmm.. which four buttons are hardly ever being used in matchmaking multiplayer of Halo as we know...
The D-Pad.. isnt it a perfect fit?
--- Hold Left D-pad to select what weapons are available for purchase and quick drop to your location with the available points you have
--- Hold Right D-pad to select which Vehicle you can pool ure points into so that your team gets closer to getting a pelican drop off of said vehicle
--- Hold Down D-pad in case of emergency reinforcements to your position for assistance... that is as long as you have enuf points to do so.. or else you are alone my friend
--- Hold Up D-pad
> for squad leaders, hold it to select which other squad you wish to speak to ( u can choose from a list of three other squads ) and talk away!
> for squad members, hold it for a couple of seconds to veto the leader, (at least 3-4 players have to agree and hold it at the same time- or just tallies could work too)
And thus the full potential of an xbox 360 controller is achieved to fit the needs of this gametype and all its fans. The end.
And P.S. dont credit me for all the ideas, cuz i just took most of em from you guys nehow.. just figured out a way to organize it and put into realism/fit it into the control schemes. =] Hopefully, people read this, shuda posted this earlier.. now its at the last page at the very bottom of the posts.. The author could take this and put it in the beginning (use edit) if he so chooses. Comment if this is good or not.
Epic, love the idea of OP and the modifications made via the thread.
Sounds a lot like Battlefield, but with that tasty Halo twist. I think it might well be too much to be merely an extra mode in Reach, it sounds almost like it would need to be it's own dedicated game. Or at the very least some sort of DLC post-release.
Quickly though, and hoping that others haven't already said these things, in which case I will look like a tool...
1) All players should drop from pods at the beginning, but first phase of play would be to capture a point near your drop zone, like in Invasion. Until you secure that point, respawns occur from drop pods. After the point is captured, a base would be built/be dropped from orbit (sounds stupid, but think Halo Wars, and you get what I mean. The opposition team could try to divert a squad or two to try and harass you and delay your base construction, or vice versa.
2) Phase two could incorporate having to capture further sections of the map, to equip your base with the capacity to spawn power weapons and vehicles, and even to give it automated defences and shields etc. There would be a limited number of these points, so they would be hotly contested and so it would be tough for one team to gain a huge advantage over the other, and are likely to get new toys at more or less the same rate.
EDIT:
I think this would work better than weapon purchasing, because purchasing would mean the best individuals will get access to the best weapons, and will be likely to pwn the plebians even more, and will then get EVEN BETTER weapons for further pwnage. That would destroy Halo. This way, the only way to get better toys is with teamwork, no Lone Wolf rubbish. And EVERYONE would benefit. So if one squad is particularly skilled, not only do they benefit, but so does the rest of their team. This would fit nicely with the new team-based ethic Reach seems to be favouring.
3) Phase 3 would simply be the capture of a final point, which would give you a bomb/weapon to destroy the enemy base. Or maybe you just get the bomb after a certain time/number of kills. I don't know what would work best. And then, once the bomb is planted, instead of the normal lame-ass explosion you get in Assault, you'd have a carrier come in and bombard the base from orbit, with an ensuing clean-up of enemy forces by the winning team (for the extra bragging rights/points).
4) One other thing could be that you spawn as Spartan 3s, but capture of enough strategic points would mean you spawn as Spartan 2s. Anyone who has played Halo 3 and Reach will know the difference and will appreciate how powerful an upgrade this would be.
But to summarise, this would be THE BEST GAME EVER.
