Five Tenets of Bungie.net Forum Life:
1. Trolls will always be well fed.
2. Blame-ability thy name is stosh.
3. Bungie has no control over retail prices.
4. Watch out for low-flying defense drones.
5. Seven is not optional, but rather, an inevitability.

No!
What response do you think you would get if you went to a CoD forum, lets say the Modern Warfare 2 forum, and suggested that there be no classes, but instead, there are weapons placed on the map, and you have to go and run to get those weapons to get an advantage.
Everyone spawns with the same weapons.
What do you think the reaction would be?
Pretty positive, considering old school gametypes and the playlist have a noticeable following in the community. Granted, yeah, the majority of the community wouldn't want to give up classes, but I'm sure, if they have enough interest, players would suck it up and play the game. I mean, gosh, it might even be entertaining.
The problem with fixed classes is that the experience gets stale after awhile. While it's certainly more fresh than simply spawning everyone with the same weapon and having them scour the map in search of something they like to specialize in, it would get old after awhile without any customization to what one could carry from the get-go.
A problem with classes also lies within the size of the multiplayer game. If Reach, being a completely new Halo franchise title, features larger maps and a bigger max player count, I don't see any problem at all with classes being included in the multiplayer. If the gameplay is more like the original Halo series, then I foresee classes of any kind complicating the multiplayer.
The thing is, it has to be designed from the ground up by going with classes. Balance issues need to be taken into account, and maps and equipment would have to be carefully designed. Without classes, Bungie can fall back on tried-and-true practices and deliver a solid, but ultimately rehashed gameplay experience.
