NOTE: This thread is purely speculative. The known flashback clues are included and listed as such.
Alrighty. As most of us know, in Halo 3 ODST, we are no longer following the linear-mission transgression, meaning you play the missions in a determined order, but a new system of playing through the game. Instead of a linear fashion, we have an open world stylized game, with certain areas of interest to the player. When in these areas of interest, one may find an object or "clue" to the fate of another ODST from your squad. This thread is a list of those objects and reasoning behind them.
We know from the E3 hands on demo the names of the main flashback levels, and from the informative thread by sanjeev the player used in those missions. Let's take a look at them.
****POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT****
1. Uplift Reserve (Dutch's initial flashback): So, we can assume that this flashback involves blowing stuff up with big guns, as Dutch is the heavy weapons specialist. We can also assume that the flashback item is something that involves explosions or breaking stuff. And we also know that there are wraith's on the map, based of the achievements.
THE CLUE: Being the initial flashback that we have of Dutch, the cue may be as simple as his crashed pod. Other than that, it could very possibly be his spartan laser, as it was mentioned in the December 2008 GameInformer that one clue was just that.
2. Tayari Plaza (Buck's initial flashback): We see the beginning of this mission in the recent Vidoc, where the sky is ablaze in slipspace residue, or that glowy blue stuff. Two pods are descending when one veers sharply to the left. We then see the player clambering out of this pod only to see a phantom come in and deploy enemies shortly after. Assuming that the other pod was a squadmate's, Buck goes out to investigate it.
THE CLUE: My theory on the other pod is that it was DARE's, and Buck went out to go get her and link up. Based on the achievements, the logo for this mission is DARE's cracked helmet. So I'm guessing that the clue is DARE's cracked helmet.
3. Kizingo Boulevard (Mickey's initial flashback): This mission details Mickey's initial encounter with Covenant in New Mombasa. We know at some point he is in a scorpion judging by the locale and the fact he is the demolitions/vehicle expert.
THE CLUE: Mickey is the vehicle expert, and as we know from the ViDoc, he almost gets blown away by a blown up vehicle. My assumption is that a part of this vehicle is his clue, say a wheel or a door.
4. ONI Alpha Site (Dutch's second flashback): The most well known and best viewed flashback. We all know that the clue is the detonator, so lets avoid making this wall bigger with explanation.
5. NMPD HQ (Romeo's inital/second flashback): The second most well known flashback. We see the majority of it's beginning cutscene in the ViDoc. Mickey and Dutch's pelican gets hit and flies out of view to an unknown fate. Romeo heads out with Buck and tries to rescue them.
THE CLUE: 99% chance that this is the sniper rifle with a prominent bend in the barrel that was mentioned in the December 2008 GameInformer. If it is not, then it could possibly be the next mission's clue.
6. Kikowani Station (????'s flashback): This level is pretty mush a mystery. Not enough footage has been shown to accurately describe it or what happens during it. My only guesses are that Romeo has another flashback before linking up with Buck or this is DARE's flashback.
THE CLUE: I can assume that if this is Romeo's flashback then the sniper rifle with-da-bend may be the clue, or if it is his initial one, his pod. If it is DARE's, god knows whatever the hell it could be.
And that is all I have to say on this subject. Feel free to correct me on anything or give suggestions.
