Subject: Reach Officially a Class-Based Game?

Before you read just know I didn't do any research into this at all, as I just stumbled across the article when looking for a more high-res Reach banner.

Now looking around I came across this website in which the author states that while Halo 3 was in production there were talks about a class-based Halo game. As we all know Reach has been in development since around the time of Halo 3. If he's right about these 'talks' I'd say it's definitive proof that Reach will be a class-based game. Thus having classes in Halo multiplayer might become a [sad] reality.

Don't flame, and if you find any more information on the topic post a link, please. As I said I didn't look into this at all, but it came as a surprise with all of the people fighting about it on the forums that nobody remembered these 'talks.'

I hunt for the Prophet of Contentment, the San 'Shyumm that murdered my son, and stole his birthright, his Energy Sword. They call our species Heretics. They claim to all that our tongues sting, our words a vile poison that feeds on the unworthy. I have seen the true face of Heresy. The head of a gallant warrior lay on the ground. His neck scorched and blistered, scarred by his own blade. I shall retrieve the weapon, and drive it through that bastard's heart! Punishment for his sins is nigh.

Why? Classes will be great. Well, itll be great so long as it is a REAL class based game, like Star Wars Battlefront, and not a fake Class based game, like CoD.

  • 08.13.2009 4:28 PM PDT

All that has been confirmed is that it will be a First Person Shooter, and that it will be awesome.

Beyond that, its just speculation, nothing "official" about it.

  • 08.13.2009 4:30 PM PDT

Yeah, if it's like Battlefront, then I'm cool with it.

  • 08.13.2009 4:31 PM PDT

Reach is perfect grounds for a large-scale Halo game. Classes can make that more feasible. Like the guy about said, REAL classes, like Battlefront.

I'm confused, what's the difference between CoD Classes and Battlefront Classes?

In battlefront you couldnt have two classes that were the same or similar, each class had a totally unique loadout and was not customizable. It kept the game balanced, and made it so when you play a different class, your playing a different game. It was really fun that way.

Ugh...

First on a BWU.. yeah, I'm cool.

ODST;MYTHIC Screenshot winner! One of the first to get their hands on the mythic map pack.

Quote from Frank O'Connor:

"The core value in Halo 2 when comparing it to Halo, is that you should pick it up, and you should know what to do and it should feel like Halo. Everytime you added something, we had to play around with that until that feels like a natural part of Halo. Until jumping on a Ghost and knocking the pilot out feels like Halo and feels logical and natural, and we hope we've done that."

That quote was taken from this video: Video

Quote from Max Hoberman:

"A lot of what we tried to make different about Halo 2, a lot of the focus was really not on making the gameplay different. The gameplay in Halo 1 was a lot of fun, we wanted to expand on that gameplay."

Taken from the same video, the link is above.

If you take those 2 quotes, you can see from Halo 1, and Halo 2, that they were applied also to Halo 3. From that we also see it in ODST. Nothing is dramatically changed in the gameplay for Halo 3: ODST.

I believe the same principles will apply to Halo: Reach.

  • 08.13.2009 4:45 PM PDT

Because they were all part of the same trilogy and ODST is an expansion/spinoff.

Reach could head in a new direction, and still not affect classic Halo in any way.

Other than the fact that bungie has officially stated that Halo Reach WILL BE AN ALL NEW EXPERIENCE. And it will be LIKE NOTHING EVER SEEN BEFORE IN THE HALO UNIVERSE.

The name's Ian, Game Designer at Whisper Game Studios, very off-and-on Bungie.net visitor and avid Bungie fan overall. Message me if you wish.

lul, so there were talks. There talks around my peeps that you had some crabs... And not the head kind ;) *Budmpsh*

No dude, so what, there were talks doesn't mean Bungie IS doing that.

Heh, actually, I wouldn't mind a TF2 Halo lol

Check out the group, Planet Reach and talk about Bungie's next game without the annoyance of the public forum. Oh and it's nice there too.

You thought you had lag, it took Jesus 3 days to re-spawn.

Just because there were rumors that had no real basis other than the Christian Allen hire, around the time Halo Reach was in development, doesn't mean it's "official". It doesn't even make it more likely, in my eyes.

I concur. The main reason why Halo 3 has stayed alive is that it appealed to a huge number of people through it's sandbox style gameplay.

You want to race? Forge a racetrack, jump on a mongoose, and ride into the sunset.

Want to make a Machima? Design the set in forge, get together with friends, and spend an hour bobbing heads to your recorded voice.

Want to play in a professional league? Cram a map as full of fusion coils, mancannons, equipment, shieldoors, spikers, and sentinel beams as possible and play B.U.N.G.L.E. with friends.

Want to take pictures? Chuck grenades and equipment in precise orders to create the desired visual effects.

Making Halo class based would take away a lot of these options. Because weapons from a class based game are not the same type of balance you find in weapons from a game like Halo 3.

i wouldn't mind classes for campaign. I will be very mad if its for multiplayer. It would ruin the skill gap. Spawning with rockets, shotguns, or snipers is just a bad idea and it wouldn't be true to the core game play elements that keep people coming back to halo. Power weapons on map and primary spawning weapons is the superior system.

I hope they wait until Bungie hands the keys to Halo over to 343 to produce something like a class based mutiplayer.

Nothing is official until Bungie says it is.

  • 08.13.2009 5:03 PM PDT

You could probably still do every single one of those things. Just because it's class-based doesn't mean you can't have Forge, Theater, or equipment. You could still probably have a degree of character model customization.

yeah TF2 had a good class system and was a good shooter and SWB's class system was also top notch but I'm still kinda wondering what I'd like better, tradional halo or class system halo...

I suppose if the game still played like halo and didn't feel like a completely new game a class system would be fun

plus the covenant class system would rock! with grunts as regular foot soilders jackles for long range brutes would be slower but stronger class and so on

Oel ngati kameie, oe omum nga, oe ’efu nga.

i think itll be good if its classed based, i mean, its a change from the old run and gun halo, and thats really what halo needs to live on and be successful, it needs a change
