This is a disgrace, there are loads of people who still play Halo 2 and Microsoft are just going to throw them out on their asses? I really hate Microsoft. They've done loads of things that I haven't agreed with, but this one is up there with the worst.
Agreed 100%. This is absolutely ridiculous. Something has to be done, but suffice to say it's really up to Bungie to take any action against Microsoft. After all, Microsoft does technically own the Halo franchise.

Halo: Out with a whimper

"The crunch on Halo 2 was, 'Oh my god, we're f***ed. We're all going to die.'" ~ Chris Carney

That articles source is based on a source of a source thats just making random guesstimates.

100 limit is a good limit, its not a problem and they must have thought about xbox live in 20 years time when they come up with that number. Does anyone honestly have 100 friends that they play with every week? Theres a huge chunk of people in my friends list that I befriended after one good match and never talked to again.

There is no reason to discontinue support for Halo 2 and i'm glad they haven't as with three red rings on my 360 Halo 2 is the best way to get my Halo fix (I tried halo pc... just... eew)

Check Out my FileShare.
I was once on Bungie Faves. (Feb.7-15)
I'd like to know why I can't see the signatures of others of myself on the forum. I have made favs once, 7777 campaign kills, and I helped bring modders down when they were at their strongest

I have 100 friends, and most don't own Halo 2, or they don't play it anymore. I need to delete friends to make room for others and hate it.

This is one of the biggest disappointments of the year. I absolutely love Halo 2 and it'll be sad to shut down the Servers, i mean, cmon? Whats the point of shutting it down when theirs 2,000 people playing it right now? Good gosh, it makes me sick when they do crap like this now, but oh well, atleast we all got a month left before they shut it off, sad for Microsoft for shutting down the Halo 2 servers because of 100 friends cap that does absolutely nothing about the game, what a dumb move from Microsoft. I bet theirs going to be a lot of fans be upset about this (like me) and Im not not happy about it.

I don't think they'll just snap their fingers and shut down what was once the most successful Xbox Live title on the planet. More people play Halo 2 online than many Xbox 360 games.

I don't foresee them ending service for what is still a considerably popular online title.

Per audacia ad astra. Halo Reach | Destiny

I don't get where people are pulling this information from. As far as I know, Microsoft have apparently stated that they could potentially shut down the Halo 2 servers. Where's the concrete, set-in-stone confirmation there? I haven't seen any direct quotes from Microsoft claiming anything.

And the problem seems to be that Microsoft can't increase the size of friendlists due to the limit being hard-coded into original Xbox titles. Ok, I understand that, but why would it help if they shut down Halo 2's servers? Doesn't it mean that they would have to shut down the servers for every original Xbox game? To me, this wouldn't make sense, especially considering the fact that Microsoft has actually started selling Xbox Originals on the Live marketplace.

Plus what Achronos said.

It seems completely obvious that the servers aren't gonna be shut down. There seems to be NO actual proof to suggest otherwise. So why do people still seem to believe it? Am I missing something, or is it just that people aren't using their noggins?

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

Take Halo 3 offline and devote more time to Halo 2.

RIP Halo 2

Guys it's fake, it's fake!
Look at the last post by the mod.

Although, they do mention that they might try to expand the friends list in recent months (which means that they have to shut down Halo 2's online servers), so I would still be worried.
It'll be a truly sad, sad day... :(((((

Good riddens!.
that game failed in everyway. Bungie even said so, I guess they are now happy to kill of their mistake.
they should think about moving to Halo 3, and Halo 3 ODST, and/or Halo 2 Vista.

Bungie never said Halo 2 failed in every way. Halo 2 was another one of their awesome creations that frankly I enjoy very much. They would never disown one of their games. I had easily 15-20x more play time on Halo 2 than H3. They are all great games. I readily embrace the future but i never forget the past.

I'll hold the rope..... and the camera. 'Cause I'm a multitasker like that.

As agile as a cougar on a young man.

Ok, if you say so boss!

Wildcard Machinima!

Only played Halo 3, but I bought Halo CE on the marketplace, and now I'm buying Halo 2 on Ebay only to find out that they're shutting it down!

  • 08.23.2009 12:33 PM PDT

I will be sad when Halo 2 gets shut off. I barely play it anymore, but I clocked in many hours in my day. Just the fact that I could play it if I wanted to is a comfort to me.

I was planning on getting this to pass a bit more time while I waited for ODST to come out.

So if they shut it down I hope they wait a month.

Can you get a regular game on it btw?

50 in H2/H3? Great, but you still fail at this.

Read the posts by the bungie staff member in this thread, it is NOT shutting down. If it does, than they will need to ban that n00by hacker in the pc version (proh1)

  • 08.25.2009 4:33 AM PDT

thanks achronos for the post.

it would be pretty silly for microsoft to shutter Halo 2 online, the game made them a lot of money (and could still for their Games on Demand service) and continues to be the most played OG Xbox title.

if the issue is the 100 friend limit and the OG Xbox titles are really holding that back - microsoft has done so much retooling with the dashboard of the 360 in the last 4 years that its hard to believe they couldn't update the backcompat emulator somehow to accomodate this or ignore it. they'd have to cut off any OG Xbox users (have they already, I dont know?), so be it.

I doubt they'd shut it off just like that. I would expect at least 6 months notice - at least they best not shut it down before I get to enjoy 5 year anniversary celebrations!

I would love it if they produced a patched Halo 2 (With the friends list issue fixed, nothing else needs touching) for download on marketplace, I'm sure people would buy it - especially if they added some achievements. I guess I can dream...

They could always release a original xbox dash update and a bc update if they ever change it.

God ****** Microsoft! First you make the Xbox 360 break half the time, now you shut down halo 2! I would take H2 over being able to have more than 100 friends any day. I will NEVER forgive them for this. I could understand shutting it down after Reach but... this is unacceptable!

Never mind saw that a mod posted. It's fake and it's only an opinion.

they dont deserve it.

i have never played halo 2 online and probably never will. but i still think microsoft is making a bad move

Avid Halo fan, however will always favour Halo 2 due to its innovative gaming style.

Of course its going to be sad, however it is right, there are 2 games on the 360 that will hopefully make up for what is going to be lost.
I know it could be a long shot, but as a map pack idea, maybe the new halo maps in a pack could be dedicated to some of the best ones of halo 2.

So long halo 2 ! The game had given me years on enjoyment, ignoring my mum whilst I play non stop, staying up nearly 2 days in a row without food, just so I could play, call me sad, but Halo 2 was an addiction, and always will be.
Love it or hate it, its still an obsession.

  • 08.27.2009 12:35 PM PDT

I wouldnt mind Bungie to close Halo 2s matchmaking, if they made customgames public with macycles and such.
