That will be a dark day indeed,i hope they reconsider or find a new means to achieve it without withdrawing matchmaking.
Who needs more 100 friends when only what 20 are on at any given time?.
Keep halo2 going please.

My friends list is always full. And I hate having to remove other people to add new ones. It's so annoying not being able to go above 100 friends. And I usually have over 40 friends online if not 50.

Halo 2 does not need to keep going. It doesn't have enough people playing it to justify holding back progress on Xbox Live. It has less than 3,000 games per day. Usually less than 2,000 even on the weekends. Compared to modern games like Halo 3 which has several million games per day and sometimes over 1 million plays online.

It's true that Microsoft isn't going to shut down XBox Live for Halo 2 yet. But it's coming. It's going to happen sooner or later.

Who would Microsoft rather please? The few thousand people playing original xbox games? Or the tens of millions of players playing modern Xbox 360 games? I think the answer is obvious.
We all know it will stop some day but that doesn't mean we have to like it. For most of us here, we like this forum, the people here are good folk (save for the occasional troll) and if H2 Live dies, this forum dies. We simply want to play and post as long as we can. Nothing wrong with that.

Ew, my username. :C

I came up with it when I was 10.

They will not remove LIVE for Halo 2 and replace it with ODST, that would just be stupid.

  • 09.21.2009 2:13 AM PDT

I'm 23, I have a house, dog, girlfriend, job and I have no interest in any fanboyism so if you're thinking about sending me a childish PM, don't be surprised when I don't call back.

Really? Halo 2 is peer to peer and ODST has no matchmaking? I think your logic is stupid.

halo 2 still the best game in the series. long live halo 2.

Dam, I miss the old days playing halo 2 with my old brothers in arms. Thank you my old friends for giving me this account, I shall continue our legacy.

Can't we all get along and enjoy halo 2. We may have dodged a bullet now but sometime in the future halo 2 will shut down eventually. "All good things must come to an end", there is no way of stopping it from happening when bungie finally decides to do it.

Luckly for us Bungie still loves us enough to keep the halo 2 servers up and running.

50 in H2/H3? Great, but you still fail at this.

They may shut it off, in a long time from now, but we will still have XBC or kai.

WELL GUESS WHAT ITS THE 23RD OF SEPTEMBER AND HALO 2 IS STILL UP ON XBOX LIVE, I HAVE CHECKED TODAY (Sept 23) and the playlists and xbox live stil exist, it also still finds matches, etc.

UNLESS! Microsoft posts it on their own site or Bungie posts it on their own site, its not valid news!

I REPLACE YOUR LOGIC WITH MY OWN :p

They're not replacing it with ODST. They're replacing it with every Xbox 360 game that exists now and all future ones.

The forum won't die. As long as Halo 2 is still playable, there will still be some discussions. And let's not forget about Halo 2 PC which will probably still have Live for a long time. So shutting down live for Halo 2 on the xbox will have a huge impact on this forum, but the forum definitely will not die. It will probably end up like the Halo 1 forums which is filled with people making stupid posts like "Bungie should re-release Halo 1" or "Bungie should delay the release of ODST for a remake of Halo 1".

This forum hasn't reached that low status yet and that's why I prefer this forum over the Halo 1 forums. But it's only a matter of time here before people start saying "Bungie should re-release Halo 2" or "Bungie should delay Halo: Reach for a remake of Halo 2". And eventually the Halo 3 forums will be like that asking for remakes of Halo 3.

But yeah, I like Halo 2 as much as the next person, but it's not enough to convince me to play Halo 2 instead of Halo 3.

Yeahhhhhhhhh, about that....
I can explain.

I was banned (below) for calling someone a cotton-headed ninnymuggen. My offensive language is too much for this website.

How could anyone think of this atrocity

I've seen a number of threads with 're-release H2' so sadly it is getting to that point.

Most people here play H2 and H3. Only a few play H2 instead of H3 by choice (some don't have a choice). H1 never had Live so I still think this forum 'effectively' will die when Live is yanked someday.

Without Live, you could still discuss the campaign in Halo 2 or custom games you played locally with your friends. So there's still some stuff to discuss.

re-releasing Halo 2 seems like a crazy idea, "but unfortunately for you I like crazy".

If a re-release of Halo 2 is ever made, I would actually want online co-op finished for it, including the levels that were taken out, minor graphical upgrades, and minor updates the end.

Since when has Microsoft ever released a game? Never. Besides, a re-release technically has been done already. It's called Halo 2 Vista (aka Halo 2 PC). It's got everything you asked for except for the campaign levels and co-op. But it does come with achievements and a map editor. So there's your remake. Take it or leave it. But a remake on the 360 will never happen. No game ever get's released on the same console. Not even games back when the N64 was out got released. So releases never happened and they never will.

Lol, just because someone has a wishful thought doesn't mean they believe it's going to happen. You're getting a little obnoxious with your comments and please don't order people to 'take it or leave it'. Lighten up a little, people just want to discuss wishful thoughts and you seem hell bent on forcing your ideas on us. If we wanted to play H2 Vista we would.

As of today matchmaking is still up!! why put up a quite alarming post on a site saying its going down when its not?.
We all know its an old game, and were all aware that one day this report wont be someone crying wolf.

On the arguement of needing more space on you F.L. one person on this thread claimed to need more as he will regularly have 40+ friends on?
How are you going to ever play 40+ diffrent friends in one sitting? lets be serious your not.

People seem to forget if it wasnt for Halo2 there would be no xbox live as we know it today, nevermind a 100+ F.L........

They did it to Halo 1, Fable, Burnout 3, and others. Go look on Games On Demand. And with the n64, they releleased games as "Players Choice", same with older systems and newer ones, they rerelease older ones as budget games with a red label or white label. And halo 2 has been released as a "plat hits" version, but now it says on it that it works on 360 instead of "ONLY ON XBOX", and also says "Best selling Xbox Game" as well.

ODST doesn't even have online (which I think is complete bull-blam!-.) So, why the hell would they replace H2 Servers for ODST? Use your brains guys.

Technically ODST does have 4 player online co-op like Halo 3 did. And the multiplayer mode for ODST is basically just Halo 3's multiplayer. That's the point of the 2nd disc in ODST.

Well, ODST doesnt have its own multi, like HL Opposing Force (another expansion for another game) did. And he means like matchmaking, but without spartans and with ODSTs.

Listen, halo 2 for the xbox is not shutting down. It was a false rumor, and bungie confirmed that halo 2 is NOT I repeat NOT shutting down.

E4web

Removing the 100 friend cap would theoreticaly mean stopping all original XBox games from connecting to LIVE as they are all "hardcoded" to 100 friends. Who needs to access more than 100 friends on an original XBox game anyway? Just up the limit for 360 users and leave the original gamers in peace with only 100 friends.

Besides, I'm sure this was confirmed false anyway.

If they do that, they would have to seperate the two online services. So you'd have an original xbox live and an xbox 360 live. Neither services can play with each other or communicate with each other. Which means that the Original Xbox Live would have to be limited to Original Xbox while the Xbox 360 gets the new updated Xbox Live with more than 100 friends.

Also, while the rumor is currently false, it's bound to happen eventually. Microsoft is going to want to do bigger updates to Xbox Live in the future and they'll have to shut down xbox live for all original xbox games if they want to be able to update live even further.
