I had originally written these as a side-story to the "Believe" commercials/diorama. With the release of ODST approaching now, I thought these few passages might get some more attention. These are my first pieces of fan-fic and were originally liked, so I wrote a new one. As of now I don't have access to it, but if these extracts are warmly greeted I will add it when I get the chance. Now please, if you will, enjoy.

Believe - 1

Mac stared down at his muddy boots, breathing deeply, trying to dam the constant flow of adrenaline through his veins. His eyes were half shut, holding back feelings that which no soldier would be assumed to possess. His mouth twitched from scowl to mournful frown, which made him appreciate his masked face. He hunched over the chair with his elbows rested upon his knees. His knuckles whitened under his gloves as he clutched the black rifle in front of him ever tighter, his only form of safety and comfort in this world of turmoil. Mac resisted the urge to look out of the gaping hole to his left, lest he dislike what he saw. He continued to gaze at his boots, but some nagging feeling was pulling at the back of his eyes. He gave in to his desire.

Immediately reality slammed into him as he saw the earth hurtling past him below, or lack there of. Bodies were flung about like the bullet shells littered about them. He saw men struggling with their weapons, and men huddled behind the petty remains of once beautiful accomplishments of engineering. Men fighting, men running, men dying. A surging vehicle rushed beneath him, the gunner in back firing off endless rounds to protect a nearby group of soldiers. Almost as quickly as Mac saw the Warthog, it burst into pluming flames and landed 30 yards from it's previous position. The occupants of the vehicle were thrown out of sight.

Mac heard a blood chilling growl and glanced over to another end of the battlefield. There they were - the beasts who caused the distress of all the men surrounding him, the monsters that haunted his dreams at night.

A giant Brute charged over to a marine, obviously a new recruit, and flailed it's arm outward from it's chest, knocking the poor man on his back. The beast erupted a scream into the man's face, a roar that got under the skin of everyone within earshot, and stomped down on his torso. Mac could hear the crunch from his seat.

He struggled, but eventually ripped his eyes from the depressing battle. He was eventually startled by the shaky voice of the marine sitting across from him:

"Sir?"

He sounded like a whimpering puppy. Mac was disgusted, but understood the man's inner confliction. He held back a grimace, and merely looked up at the man. He continued:

"You have any thoughts on all this?"

Mac slowly turned his head back over to the opening, and riveted his gaze on the disfortunate beings below.

"None that need be said."

The uncomfortable man fidgeted in his seat, opened his mouth to speak, thought better of it, and looked away instead.

Mac eyed a soldier activating a frag, then his gaze was wrenched from the battlefield once again, this time not from his own will. He glanced around the violently shaking space and saw the red lights mounted on the ceiling flashing as the sirens pounded his eardrums. The soldiers around him spun their heads like dumbfounded animals, but Mac knew what was going on. His legs sprung open and raised their master to his full height. He grasped the rail with one hand and pointed his weapon out the opening with the other. He forced fear to the back of his mind like a forsaken child, and braced himself for an unprepared landing.

His legs yet againg bore their master and groaned with the effort of supporting him as the mighty pelican tore through the remaining city buildings. The darkness engulfed the soldiers as the great bird died in a sigh of mechanical groans and electric screaches. The vehicle eventually came to a halt, and silence swallowed the scene. After a seeming century of unsureness, Mac hesistantly leapt from the hatch. Not from fear, but from dislike and long established fatigue. With a faint, half-hearted "oorah", Mac snuck and disappeared into the dilapidated shadows.

Believe - 2

The cables shot up in a gnarled mass, tangled around each other and embedded in the rough concrete. The dust still floated in the air from where soldiers had hustled through the pathways, and it shrouded Mac in a dirty mist as he peered over the destroyed wall. His gun rested on the top of the barrier, and the top of his helmet and visor were just barely visible above the pebbles sitting atop the wall.

The beast stood in front of him, grunting and mumbling inaudibly to his smaller troops. The grunts dispersed into the surrounding areas, following some
unknown ocommand, and waddled into safe zones which offered cover from his soon to be approaching comerades. Two of the monsters started chatting banterfully, but were interupted by a sharp snarl from their leader. They were not afraid. Even the lowliest members of the powerful alliance that is the Covanent weren't afraid of him and his men. He was ashamed, which spurred a different emotion. His blood started to boil, and his anger rose and traveled to his arms. He wanted to shoot down each one if them now, but he knew better than that. He took a deep, silent breath from his nose, and braced himself; the marines should be blundering into this trap at any second.

Mac heard a faint shouting accompanied by a rustle of footsteps and clicking of armor. The Brute whispered something to his soldiers, and they jumped into a ready stance, pistols pointed outward to the alleys. The steps grew louder; the beasts grew blood lust.

Finally the marines came blundering through the alley and the aliens opened fire. The first man fell to the ground, a few spikes impaled in his chest and his flesh singed a green hue in a few areas. But Mac didn't notice. The ODST was already on his feet, and launched himself over the barrier. He ran up to the Brute leader, and quickly located a flaw in it's armor. He pressed a button on his rifle, and the spring loaded bayonet under the barrel revealed itself. Mac now reached the Brute and stabbed the weapon into the beast's back at an eighty degree angle. He shot upwards into the beasts head while simultaneously whipping out a pistol with his free hand and shooting down a grunt. He did this all before anyone had known he was there. The monsters all now turned to face him and he ripped his rifle out of the dead Brute, letting it fall to the ground. Seeing their leader hit the ground was too much for the creatures sanity. They forgot their hunger for blood and abandoned their orders, suddenly gripped with fear. They ran screaming into the alleyways.

"Clean 'em up." Mac told his pack of hunters, and they ran off like wolves, their hope increasing with the fall of their adversary's. Mac raised his pistol and shot one more monster just before it rounded a corner. He watched the blood splatter against the wall, before turning with that same hesitance to the streets of New Mombasa. He heard the chatter of guns increasingly growing, keeping up with the fear swelling in his stomach.

When life gives you lemons, ferment them and get drunk.

I must say, this is one of the best battle scenes i have ever read. You acomplished something very dificult, and produced an excelent piece of work. This is really really cool, and i am looking forward to you next part. Can you check out my story P.C.U. The Proud Defenders of Earth? It's only one part so far, and it isn't that long iether. Anyway, send me a message when the next part comes out :D
