We've finished the fight but so many have died...
We've left the chief floating above a mysterious planet, perhaps forunner, perhaps anything.
This will be the last game bungie will make in the halo universe, something tells me
this will just be more than just a run of the mill prequel to "show us more' like ODST.
I'll remind you of just some of the hints BUNGIE have placed in the games about the forunner origins; guilty spark's "you are forunner" quote from the end of Halo 3. The fact the SPARTANS were chosen based on genetic 'traits', the innate ability for humans to use forunner technology and the location of the Ark on Earth - all point to humans having some form of forunner ancestory. This seems like something Bungie will want to tie up before they hand there child over to anime making 343 industires and something a prequel alone wouldn't be able to cover.
Now, I refer you to an obersevent individuals posting regarding the banner of Halo: Reach.

What he says is interesting but the image speaks more;

He has most definetley identified all of them as some of the original spartans from the SPARTAN II program, including the chief. Now I'm going to say what is on the tips of everyones lips at this moment... we all want it to be more than just a prequel about the young Chief, we want more, we crave an ending where the Chief must make the ultimate sacrifice, truly end this series and close the book.
What If.
What if the planet is forunner, what if the forunner's were experimenting with time travel or something, what if at the end of Halo 3 the chief travels back in time to the The Fall of Reach, just before or just after humanity's first contact with the Covenant. It'd be his oppertunity to change things for the better with the knowledge he has, a chance for us fight the fight the way we've always wanted and return to the places we've been.
What if the younger Chief dies as a result of the olders' arrival, he must put on the old helmet and play the role of his younger self. That would explain why all the spartans are together as a team. The Chief would be able save them from there original fates and with there help finsh the fight before it ever happend, saving all those lives and bringing an end to the story, beautiful...
Now that would be a game and a half...Just saying...
