Is it just me, or does it seem like the big publicity for Halo 3: ODST is coming directly from their secondary game mode Firefight? In all of these previews that major game reviewers are getting the biggest aspect talked about is always Firefight.

Plus, half of this forum has turned into talking about the Firefight game mode. The campaign talk has been kept to a minimum of what it seems it should be, because everybody is looking forward to an extra feature rather than the core campaign.

Don't get me wrong. I am looking forward to playing Firefight as much as anybody here, but it seems like that is becoming the only reason to buy the game for most people. In my opinion Halo 3: ODST will be a big success for two reasons.

1. It's a Halo game.

2. It's additional content minus the campaign.

By "additional content", I include the last half of the Mythic Map Pack.

Discuss, but please no flaming or irrelevant posts.

My problems [with Reach] are basically just full parties, mlg, and people who go out of their way not to get killed.

You can not blame anyone for being hyped for Firefight. I have wanted something like Firefight the very first time I played Halo: Combat Evolved back in 5th grade. Next week I start college, and Firefight is finally coming out. I'm probably more hyped for this game than I was for Halo 3.

This is probably due to the fact that I didn't even have Xbox LIVE right when Halo 3 came out. But now... I can play Firefight alongside my friends.

As for the campaign, I'm beyond hyped for that too. Bungie.net tracks total kills for both campaign and Firefight modes. I love killing Covies, which is more than obvious by taking one glance at my campaign kills.

Not to mention, this is going to make the Halo storyline and Universe even more in-depth than it already is. I'm never opposed to that. It has a fantastic storyline.

Basically... I'm hyped for everything the game has to offer, but Firefight more than anything else.

By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

It's going to be great, the campaign seems to be a lot deeper than what is being let on and Firefight is the cherry on top of the cake.

This is going to be the most visual Halo game yet, the environments look beautiful and I can tell this will be the biggest bang yet.

I'm not blaming anybody for wanting to play a new and entertaining part of the game. Like I said, I know that I am going to be playing Firefight an insanely large amount once ODST comes out, but first I am going to at least start the campaign.

I have been a Halo fanboy ever since i first saw the announcement for Halo: Combat Evolved, and I've gotten every Halo game since then the first day of their release. I have to agree with you on wanting a game mode like this for a while, but I just didn't want it to detract from the actual storyline or campaign gameplay.

I know that I am going to love every aspect of Halo 3: ODST, and that I am going to be playing it non stop for a while after I get it on the 22nd. I just wish that more people were in to the storyline like I am, and I wish that they were buying the game for that instead of an extra feature of a full blown game.

I know that not everybody is buying it for Firefight, but most of the sales that ODST racks up will be from three groups of people.

1. Those who want Firefight.

2. Those who want Halo 3 multiplayer maps.

3. Those who want to finish the Vidmaster achievements for obvious reasons.

Such a small percentage will actually want to play the campaign for the storyline.

Well I said I'd buy Halo3 just for Survival mode, which it didn't have despite all the demand.

Even now ODST seems to have quite short campaign, it lacks Elites completely and overall I don't think the fun lasts too many times. Multiplayer never was the big thing for me and I still think ODSTs MP won't fix the game option problems Halo3 had.

If Firefight had some basic offline stats from highest set reached and score per level, featured 4 player split-screen and had all the enemies, items and vehicles in entire Halo trilogy atleast on 1 map, it would be perfect and easily warrant buying the game just for Firefight. I'm still undecided whether it is the "Never ending, ultimate Halo Battle". That's the thing I'm looking forward the most.

If ODST only had campaign and the "complete multiplayer", I wouldn't even consider buying it before it's $30.

Here’s what Luke had to say about the differences in treatment between the Spartans and Elites in Reach:

“Instead of piece-by-piece customization like the Spartans, Elite customization is a full model swap with models selected from the various Elite classes appearing throughout the Campaign. There are all kinds of reasons for this, not the least of which is our continued emphasis on the Spartan as your identity in Reach.”

Anyway, while it is sad that most Halo players don't even know the storyline, that is how they play the game. When many people call Elites "dinos" it's usually because they don't know what they are actually called.

If you ask a random player what ODST stands for, they won't even get the O correct. Most players probably can not even name the Prophet in charge of the Covenant at the time of Halo 3.

If the word "plasma" was not in the weapons name, most players would probably call them "laser guns" or something lame like that.

It annoys me when people call the Warthog the "truck" because they don't know the real name. I call it a Volvo or a Toyota from time to time, just because I think it's funny.

Too many players neglect the storyline and campaigns in all of the games, but that is how they play.

I, myself, am a Halo storyline freak. I have all of the books (Cole Protocol included). I love learning more about the Halo-verse.

i bought halo 1 through 3 specifically for the story, multiplayer was always secondary

And that is what is mostly bothering me for Halo 3: ODST. It was designed to be a campaign expansion meaning that those who actually knew and understood the storyline would buy it. Now, however, it has become infested with those who want the game solely for it's gimmicks.

Sure the gimmicks are nice touches to add on to the game, but when they take center stage it just gets on my nerves a little.

And I know what you mean about people having no idea what anything is because they don't pay attention to the storyline. I was having a discussion not too long ago, and somebody who had completed the Halo 2 and Halo 3 campaign was obviously not listening while playing. They couldn't answer any of these questions.

1. What does ODST stand for? (You pointed that one out above.)

2. Who are the prophets? (Big storyline that began in Halo 2.)

3. Who is the Arbiter? (He said "some random elite that is good".)

4. When does Halo 3: ODST take place? (I phrased it differently to mean a general timespan using storyline references. They still had no idea that it starts partway through Halo 2's storyline.)

And so on and so forth.

The thing that made the Halo series what it is today was the amazingly captivating storyline, but the problem is that now people just ignore it altogether.

Maybe that's because Bungie decided to change too? Halo3 had pathetic storyline. "Kill Truth", "Kill Flood", "You are Forerunner". Absolutely no twists or details.

Story isn't good or necessary just because it's a story. Personally I loved everything about HaloCE, and the story of Halo2, but I absolutely hate the idea of Halo books.

Who knows the exact and complete Star Wars story anymore? That doesn't stop millions of people from enjoying occassional Star Wars games.
