Everyone knows about the Katana in Halo 3, a lot of people actually own the damn thing. While it is a nice aesthetic piece of armor, it really has no use, it just makes your Spartan look pretty. The Elites got a bum deal because they didn't get anythig like the Katana, while the Honor Guard Pike would have been ideal.
In any case, I think these would have been great additions to to the sandbox of Halo weapons. I think an attempt should be made to include them again in Halo: Reach, but as usable weapons. How? I'll do my best to make my case.
Katana: Tie the Katana with a RIDICULOUSLY hard Achievement so it won't be owned by a large portion of the Halo community. If you unlock it, you can toggle it in an armor customization menu, if there is a menu anyway. Once on, you can use it in MM. However, it would fill in the place of your secondary weapon. So you can have say a BR and Katana. I have two different ideas on what to do with it.
1. You would be unable to lose your Katana unless it breaks, because I think it would have a "strikes until breaking" ammo meter. Once its broken, you can pick up a new weapon.
2. You can drop it, but other players can pick it up. Ammo would still be present.
How it would work: Tap B or RT for a hack and slash while lunging would result in a stab.
Honor Guard Pike: the rules to unlock the Pike would be the same as the Katana. Using it would also be the same as the Katana. This would also become your secondary weapon. Same two rules would be used.
How it would work: Tap B to hack and slash while lunging would be like killing someone with the Flag.
Counters: Both the Katana and Pike could be countered by other melee weapons or another Katana/Pike. Or you could just kill the wielder from a longer range out of their killing field.
What do you think? Would this be acceptable?
