Will Halo 3:ODST be more of a Sandbox game like GTA IV? Just a question that I wanted to get out of my system so that I don't get too over excited over Halo 3:ODST.

Do we really need to say every open world game is like GTA4? That's just not true at all anymore.

Eat raw meat.
Punch a bear in the face.

If you don't know who I am, the feeling is mutual.

Yeah, you're right. Now there's Saint's Row, Mercenaries, many MMOs, Fallout, and so many more.

Let's just say it'll be a Sandbox game with flashback missions.

It's not really sandbox at all. All you do is go from 1 waypoint to another, but you decide how to get there.

I swear to DRUNK, I'm not GOD!

To my understanding, Halo 3: ODST campaign works like this...
---------------------
You: Here
A big, broad city full of knooks and crannys, enemies, vehicles, rooftops, healthpacks, and empty streets free for you to roam about in: Here
Your objective: Here
--------------------

Notice how the "big, broad city full of knooks and crannys, enemies, vehicles, rooftops, healthpacks, and empty streets free for you to roam about in" part is BETWEEN you and your objective.

I think this pretty much suggests open-world gameplay, although don't expect to be hijacking any passing cars any time soon. xD

What about stealing a Ghost from a Grunt once and a while and going for a joy ride in a Banshee?

It's not really sandbox at all. All you do is go from 1 waypoint to another, but you decide how to get there.

That's all you do in GTA, Fallout, Oblivion, etc. You go from 1 waypoint to the next. GTA represents them as letters, fallout and oblivion just as markers.

The sandbox nature of a game refers to it simply being open world and being able to go through it at your own pace, exploring areas how you see fit.

Actually, there will be a Mongoose, and there are Brutes that want your ride.

So would the Halo level in Halo: CE where you go around rescuing marines be considered "sandbox"?

In its own way yes; Sandbox is just a definition of how the game is played designed to be played through ; it doesn't have to apply to the WHOLE game.

i think he only compares it to gta4 because its a well known open-world game that most people can relate to.

"Apparently people don't like the truth, but I do like it; I like it because it upsets a lot of people. If you show them enough times that their arguments are bull-blam!-, then maybe just once, one of them will say, 'Oh! Wait a minute I was wrong.' I live for that happening. And you are free to explore anywhere in Mombasa. Did you see the map you use? You can go anywhere in the city.

It's freeroam as the Rookie. Flashback missions act as classy Halo type missions.

Actually, now that I think about it, I think that "Open-World" means you have set locations you must get to, and you can go there by any means you see fit, be that backroads, or just making a bee-line to your destination.

But "Sandbox" means... well... what is a sandbox? It's a big area where you can screw around and make things, destroy things, and do whatever you want. For example, in Crackdown, if I want to, I can play the missions, OR I can randomly lift up people's cars, and toss them onto rooftops... OR I can make a big pile of cars in the middle of an intersection, fire a rocket at it, and make a HUGE explosion in the middle of the street! OR I can throw dead bodies into a lake until I can walk on the surface or something! xD

And in this sense... I think that Halo 3: ODST is more of an Open-World game than a Sandbox game.

Bad example, Crackdown was a bad game. A good example would be Battlefield:Bad Company, its a Sandbox game but you're not going to screw around too much because you have an Objective to complete.

Go Rams and Missouri!

Sort of. Yes, you have New Mombasa that is yours to enjoy, and in a recent interview by IGN, a Bungie employee stated that you could spend upwards of 8 or so hours in New Mombasa and not get bored. However, the flashbacks are all linear and don't have an element of open-world, just like Halo 1-3.

Video (also states that ODST rivals the length of Halo 1 and 2).

We all know the only reason we bought it was for the Halo 3 Beta invitation = P

I hope it's sanbox type. Can you imagine the possibilities? I'm gonna see if I can get three other friends and have a huge mongoose race through the city. Or a rocket race.

That would be very nice, imagine trying to escape from a Phantom with a Mongoose around New Mombasa; now that will be extreme.
