Actually, now that I think about it, I think that "Open-World" means you have set locations you must get to, and you can go there by any means you see fit, be that backroads, or just making a bee-line to your destination.
But "Sandbox" means... well... what is a sandbox? It's a big area where you can screw around and make things, destroy things, and do whatever you want. For example, in Crackdown, if I want to, I can play the missions, OR I can randomly lift up people's cars, and toss them onto rooftops... OR I can make a big pile of cars in the middle of an intersection, fire a rocket at it, and make a HUGE explosion in the middle of the street! OR I can throw dead bodies into a lake until I can walk on the surface or something! xD
And in this sense... I think that Halo 3: ODST is more of an Open-World game than a Sandbox game.Bad example, Crackdown was a bad game. A good example would be Battlefield:Bad Company, its a Sandbox game but you're not going to screw around too much because you have an Objective to complete.
OY! Don't be hatin' on Crackdown! It was a fun breath of something new, and you know it! :P
