From HBO's front page:

So the big news of the morning is that Microsoft has made a small version of the Halo ad currently showing in Loews theatres available to the public. The astoundingly frustrating part of this is that the page is viewable ONLY on a PC - Macs can't even see the teaser. This seems unreasonable, for content that was designed to be advertising in the first place. Even on a PC, the video is only available in a streaming format - and only, in fact, on Internet Explorer.

WTF? Only on Windows, and even for Windows users, only for WMP. And even still only for Internet Explorer users? WTF is that?! Has Microsoft ever heard of the concept of other platforms?! Maybe not everyone in the world uses their mediocre products?

I get it. Instead of competing on implementation, they decide to strongarm the market and compete on standards. While the rest of the computing world has the philosophy of "agree on standards, compete on implementation," good ole Microsoft does the exact opposite: "Compete on standards so hopefully there won't be any other implementations." In other words, "Be as incompatible with the rest of the world as possible to force everyone to use Microsoft-only products."

WTF?? These kinds of anti-competitive practices suck eggs for the consumer. What if I don't have WMP, or if I'd rather use a different player? Too bad, it's Microsoft-only if you want to watch this particular clip. Or what if every company worked this way? If everyone made their browsers incompatible we'd end up back in the 90s where you have to have several browsers on your computer because they're all incompatible. "Sorry, this page only works with Netscape/Explorer/whetever." And don't even get me started on the living hell this creates for web developers.

Microsoft needs to wake up and get with the program and start embracing standards-based technology. Everyone wins. Consumers don't get screwed over because of intentional broken compatiblity issues. Developers and webmasters don't have to make 5 versions of everything so everyone can read the files correctly. And consumers get to choose from a level playing field of competing products: everything is compatible, so you pick your favorite implementation of the standards-based technology.

You can debate the quality of MS's products, but this right here is exactly the kind of -blam!- that makes me hate them. What's the matter? They don't think Windows/WMP/IE can compete if consumers have a choice? Stop the BS. Stop intentionlly breaking compatibility with all non-Microsoft products.

I swear, -blam!- like this makes me want to sell my Xbox and cancel my Halo 2 pre-order.

(I'm posting this here because Bungie is a division of Microsoft, and the trailer I want to watch is about their game.)

Its nothing special, if you've seen the 2nd E3 trailer then you've already seen 3/4 of it.

The video is somewhat dissapointing, but that doesn't make elmo's points any less valid.

Thanks dude. Mostly old stuff, but the ending was cool. :) I can't see it in the theater because there are no Loews theaters in my area.
