Fear the Jinx... for he has arrived

i have always wondered why in halo 3 meleeing can be a simple act of press a button twice and your character just repeats the same hit over and over until they die
It seems to not be as engaging as other melee systems in other games where depending on your position, what weapon you have and how you enter a melee fight can change how it ends up
my idea is that to impliment some kind of system where you could make melee slightly less powerful(because nothing alive could kill a fully armored super soldier in two hits) but instead creating a sort of combo/fighting style to meleeing
imagine the situation, you are in multiplayer fighting against a guy with an assault rifle but he fails to keep his distance, you can then begin a melee fight by maybe say that you have a plasma rifle for the first hit you would smash it off the top of the enemy's head and cause them to stumble, you would then continue to maybe throw a straight punch into the poor spartan's gut and then uppercut to make him fall backwards then you would proceed to finish him off by jumping on him and firing a few plasma shots into his face.
I believe this would make close combat visually more interesting and would take away the fact that as soon as someone gets close to you, you just need to press a button faster than the other person can, by maybe if this system were implimented during a melee you could attempt to counter what your opponent is attacking you with.
please tell me what you think of this idea and i am open to any suggestions on how this system could be improved.
its a simple addition to it but i believe it would give halo a more cinematic feel to it.

I dont think this will work for mp.The animation is too long.I mean what if your doing that and some random guy sees you and kills you before you can finish the fight with the other enemy.

Fear the Jinx... for he has arrived

this is an issue but what i am explaining is that it was an example i gave
with different weapons it could have different results like with lighter weapons your attacks would be faster and with heavier weapons it would be a slower attack
but i do realise what you are saying but the one i gave was an example and the results would differ depending on the situation and weapons
let me know if anyone would like another example of how this system could be implemented

Idk if this concept would really work because , like he said^, you could killed in the middle of all of this. Would you still be pressing one button or would it be multiple for combos?

it would just end up as chainsawing in gears of war2
its lame as hell

well it would still be the same button for meleeing but what you would add to start combos is different positions such as you might do an uppercut by pressing the melee button down and aiming at their feet this in turn would continue a combo by aiming at different parts do hit but as i said before when the person pinned him and shot him that would include using the button to shoot him.
basically you could risk it and do a long combo making it more satisfying and maybe might include a special medal for long combos but you could be vunerable to be shot at by other people.
or you could just do a small combo and finish them off quickly which wouldnt be as satisfying but would prevent the risk of being shot mid combo.

The closest we could get to what you are suggesting is the Halo 2 melee system, BXB and all. The Halo 2 Melee system had different damage depending if you were jumping, running, or standing still and added even more depth with the button glitch BXB, which was a faster melee for those that don't know.

Now in Reach Bungie could bring back this system and simply put the BXB into the system on purpose to add depth, this way people wouldn't complain that a glitch was in the game and would simply thank Bungie for making melee battles more than just button mashing.

Think of the BXB, if it were purposely implemented, sort of like a dash cancel in street fighter. You get to cut your beat down animation a little short and then can go into another melee. The only problem with this is that it would also bring back the BXR because it would just end with a shot instead of a beatdown, while this would arguably add more depth to the close range combat, it could easily be avoided by simply programming the game to not accept the fire button as an acceptable follow-up to a cancel.

If not, then we are most likely stuck with the boring beat-down system in Halo 3.

I remember in the Halo 2 E3 demo that a melee combo was shown.

Prepare to get M3RKed!

This system would never work in Halo. Say I come up behind 3 enemies without them noticing, so I assassinate the first guy in a very long and unneeded process instead of half a second, then one of the other guys turns because he heard me beating the crap out of the first guy. Then, if I somehow manage to get to him before he blows me away (not likely), then the third guy turns and shoots me before I have a chance to finish off the second guy. Then I only get 1 kill instead of 2-3 kills. I admit, the halo 3 melee system is kind of boring, but this is just to much to and would, in my opinion, hurt the gameplay more than it helped.

I would like...

Halo 1 melee system.

+

A double melee. Click B to melee, click XB at the precise moment and you can chain to another melee almost instantaneously. Of course if you mistime it you are at a disadvantage like with active reloading in GOW. This would also not be overpowered as melees would take skill like they did in Halo 1, unlike in Halo 2/3.

Halo 1 had a double beatdown (BYB). I see your point and partially agree, but the halo 2 system took almost as much skill as the halo 1 system. But definately a combination of the halo 1 and 2 systems.
