technically, yes it is, on the surface.

When you dig to the inner depths of the story though, it is abundently rich in variation and info.

And I think the ending of halo 3 was just to pay homage to the ending of Halo CE, with the two vehicle races that I happen to quite enjoy!

By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

Halo 2 didn't end with a Halo Ring being blown up.

Go Rams and Missouri!

The Halos are the entire basis of the story. You are fighting the Covenant, leading them away from Earth with a random slipspace jump, and you arrive at this Halo. You learn it's secrets, and know it must be destroyed. In Halo 2, you defend Earth, but then learn that it wasn't the entire Covenant fleet when we find another Halo ring. This is where we learn there are more Halo rings. At the Ark, Truth fires the rings, but then Chief stops him. Then, we find a replacement to the first ring, and activate that so that it destroys the Flood and the Ark (and the released Flood are all on the Ark at this point, as well as the Gravemind).

The stories all use Halos in interesting ways and make it all fun. And if we are talking about repetitive multiplayer, you obviously don't follow the Top 10 Live Activity charts on Majornelson.com. Halo 3 is beating out both CoD4 and CoD WaW combined. Both CoD games combine for about 900,000 users a day, Halo 3 has over a million, according to Larry Hryb, aka Major Nelson.
