Halo Reach is supposed to be the next generation of the Halo franchise. The question everyone wants to know is of course: What will the gameplay be like? Well, here is my theory. Bungie has released a statement proclaiming it to be a shooter, which means that another RTS is obviously out of the question, as well as a halo themed racing game and other such junk. Well, That means there are three choices for the gameplay. It obviously won't be a normal shooter because including halo 3 ODST, Halo with have had 4 shooters in it's lineup and Bungie is probably pretty tired of making shooters. So, the three options left, in my opinion are 1. FPS MMO 2. Squad-Based Shooter 3. Battlefield style combat and 4 FPS RPG.

So here's my reasoning for each one,as well as the probability of each.

1. FPS MMO: Out of the three, this is the least likely. There were plans for an MMO set in the halo universe, but the project was scrapped halfway through. In fact, you can find it's concept art floating around the web. There is a possibility that they have been secretly working on it, and simply decided to take it in a different direction, hence the FPS. It's not very likely because Bungie hasn't really touched upon anything like that and I think that it would be a bad move for them. Another thing to consider is the setting. While Reach being a prequel would support this theory somewhat, ( This would take place when many Spartans were alive, thereby feasibly allowing you to created a spartan character) the nail in the coffin is the length. The only remotely interesting period that reach has ever gone through is The Fall Of Reach. This happened quite quickly, and so having an extended MMO universe in that setting simply wouldn't make sense.

2. SQUAD-BASED FPS: Of the three possibilities, this is the most probable outcome. It is not too much of a departure from their traditional FPS, and it would appear to be supported by the five silhouettes next to the title. The one on the left must be a spartan (whether it's sam or not is of no concern to me) and since there were multiple spartans planet-side during Reach's fall, a squad-based shooter would seem the obvious choice. Man, i really hope it is, as there hasn't been a good one since Star Wars: Republic Commando. Before moving on to the third, and most intriguing possibility, let's discuss the silhouettes. The one on the left is a spartan carrying a machine gun turret. The one on the far right is probably an ODST sniper. The reasoning behind this is that in the recent story trailer released for ODST, the ODST sniper wears goggles over his helmet that would fit the silhouette exactly. the one next to the sniper is possibly carrying a new close combat weapon (stun baton?) and the middle one is carrying a battle rifle. Take from that what you will.

3. BATTLEFIELD STYLE SHOOTER: Probably the coolest possibility is a halo style battlefield type game. This is more likely than the MMO, but Less likely than the Squad based shooter. The vast planet of reach would make for very diverse maps, and the classes are practically made already. ( jakal=sniper, etc.) This would probably be the most drool- worthy concept possible, i mean, think about it! The xbox's answer to MAG!!!! Yeah...

4. FPS RPG: ah, the RPG... Imagine a fallout 3 style FPS RPG in the Halo universe..... actually, Im not quite sure how likely this one is. On one hand, it would be pretty badass and without the restrictions that axed the MMO idea, on the other hand, Bungie has already announced the betas for what we can only assume is multiplayer, otherwise they would have called it a demo. Since RPGs don't usually have multiplayer, i don't think this one is very likely. But still, its an awesome possibility.

One final note before leaving is that the battle for reach was fought in space just as much as it was on the ground. How this will affect the game remains to be seen..........

Please post your opinions!

Just rock to the rhythm of the funky Rhyme, So i can get busy just one more time.

Another type of game i think would be sick would be a Chromehounds type game. Chromehounds came out a few years ago and the basis of the game was that it was a constant war online in which everyone on the game would participate in the same war taking cities and capturing territory for one of the 3 warring countries. In a way this would be an MMO but it makes the MMO idea feasible. The game was extremely popular for a few months but died out because of a lack of replayibility. Another major problem the game had that Bungie could easily solve using IP filters was that all the American players would get on and take their territory and what not, then at night the Asian players would get on and retake all of the territory and completely change the war. But I definitely think Bungie could turn Reach into a Warzone and it would be the most Epic game ever.

If Halo doesn't take some new steps it will eventualy die and we all know that. You are a selfish fan who is afraid of change.

I appreciate your open mindedness on the subject spartan. and i agree that halo needs to stay fresh and new. Its part of the reason theyre coming out with ODST which is a complete change in halo considering its with normal humans and the new firefight mode.

Change for the Halo series is inevitable. Otherwise, as previously stated, the franchise will die. But I think that gradual change is the way to go. (they tried a completely new idea for halo wars and look how that turned out)

i would like the last one...imagine 100+ in one game....*jaw drop*....however i would like that with squads. so you have a whole team of 50, but you also have your base squad of 5-10 filled with sniper, grunt, medic, etc etc. To help the squad stay together you get "auras" given off by your squad leader. These can be anything your squad votes on in the pre-game lobby such as better armor, or higher damage. that way if you left the radius of your "aura" you are a sitting duck. also you can not inherit these "auras" from squads that are not yours.

The MMO idea is pretty cool, like increasing the endurance or your character means you can hold the weapon steadier or increasing agility means jumping higher. however this gives an unfair disadvantage to those who have trouble leveling at first and then get crushed by someone whose got it all.

EDIT: even though halo wars was NOT Bungie, it was still a remarkably positive turn-out and i'd have to say keeps the lore going strong.

You just described every MMO ever. Something worth noting tho, is that The original MMO was set to be a third person outing. But yeah, Halo MAG would rock.

Bungie didn't make Halo Wars. For the last time, that was all Ensemble. Blame them if you don't like it.

I think the Squad based shooter is by far the coolest and most likely direction Reach could take. Each of the main spartans tended to have a weapons specialty, and revolving the game around that could be amazing. Bungie revolutionized the FPS, I could see them defining the Squad based game as well.

I WOULD LIKE TO SEE A SORT OF SQUAD BASED THING KINDA LIKE BROTHERS IN ARMS (SO THERES A SORT OF TACTICAL EDGE WITH YOUR OTHER SPARTANS INSTEAD OF JUST RUN AND GUN), A COVER SYSTEM LIKE GEARS OF WAR (BUT STAY IN FIRST PERSON), A SORT OF BUTTON COMBO TO DISMEMBER YOUR ENEMIES IN CLOSE QUARTERS AND MOVEABLE OBJECTS FOR COVER. I KNOW THIS IS EXAGGERATED AND NONE OF THIS IS EVEN LIKLEY TO SHOW UP BUT I THINK SOME NEW ELEMENTS WOULD ADD TO THE GAME. AND AN MA5B WITH THE MA5C ACCURACY.

WELL, IF BUNGIE WERE TO TRULY MAKE A TACTICAL SQUAD BASED SHOOTER, THE SQUAD WOULD HAVE TO BE COMPRISED OF ODST SOLDIERS, NOT SPARTANS. SPARTANS ARE SIMPLY TO BULKY FOR THAT KIND OF STUFF. MAYBE YOU COULD CALL IN A SPARTAN WITH A CHAINGUN OR SOMETHING FOR SPECIAL SUPPORT?

But I don't want to blame Ensemble, the gave us AOE...... They didn't deserve this....... Well alright, Halo Wars wasn't really THAT bad, but still it lacked the scale of true RTSs.

I would like to agree with some of these ideas but here's something.

Why fix something that isn't already broken?

Its not "fixing it" if the game is a new genre, its branching out. Bungie has already expressed the desire to expand the Halo universe, and they can only make so many Halo shooters before they get old (granted it will take a while, but it will eventually get old)

  • 08.23.2009 3:12 AM PDT

i think that the squad would be awesome everyone with different specialties. Is there gonna be any relation with new types of covenant/flood? i really hope they have a much bigger weapon variety

  • 08.23.2009 6:23 AM PDT

I believe your theory breaks down when you begin saying Bungie is "tired" of making FPS. Remeber, after Halo: Reach, the Halo series will be given to a new company known as "343 industries."

Reach being Bungie's last Halo game (likely), I believe they will finally give the fans what they want from Halo. Everything. From an in depth campaign, to limitless customization options for Multiplayer, to a new revolutionary Forge mode. Halo needs these thing if it is going to stand the test of time.
