Halo Reach is supposed to be the next generation of the Halo franchise. The question everyone wants to know is of course: What will the gameplay be like? Well, here is my theory. Bungie has released a statement proclaiming it to be a shooter, which means that another RTS is obviously out of the question, as well as a halo themed racing game and other such junk. Well, That means there are three choices for the gameplay. It obviously won't be a normal shooter because including halo 3 ODST, Halo with have had 4 shooters in it's lineup and Bungie is probably pretty tired of making shooters. So, the three options left, in my opinion are 1. FPS MMO 2. Squad-Based Shooter 3. Battlefield style combat and 4 FPS RPG.
So here's my reasoning for each one,as well as the probability of each.
1. FPS MMO: Out of the three, this is the least likely. There were plans for an MMO set in the halo universe, but the project was scrapped halfway through. In fact, you can find it's concept art floating around the web. There is a possibility that they have been secretly working on it, and simply decided to take it in a different direction, hence the FPS. It's not very likely because Bungie hasn't really touched upon anything like that and I think that it would be a bad move for them. Another thing to consider is the setting. While Reach being a prequel would support this theory somewhat, ( This would take place when many Spartans were alive, thereby feasibly allowing you to created a spartan character) the nail in the coffin is the length. The only remotely interesting period that reach has ever gone through is The Fall Of Reach. This happened quite quickly, and so having an extended MMO universe in that setting simply wouldn't make sense.
2. SQUAD-BASED FPS: Of the three possibilities, this is the most probable outcome. It is not too much of a departure from their traditional FPS, and it would appear to be supported by the five silhouettes next to the title. The one on the left must be a spartan (whether it's sam or not is of no concern to me) and since there were multiple spartans planet-side during Reach's fall, a squad-based shooter would seem the obvious choice. Man, i really hope it is, as there hasn't been a good one since Star Wars: Republic Commando. Before moving on to the third, and most intriguing possibility, let's discuss the silhouettes. The one on the left is a spartan carrying a machine gun turret. The one on the far right is probably an ODST sniper. The reasoning behind this is that in the recent story trailer released for ODST, the ODST sniper wears goggles over his helmet that would fit the silhouette exactly. the one next to the sniper is possibly carrying a new close combat weapon (stun baton?) and the middle one is carrying a battle rifle. Take from that what you will.
3. BATTLEFIELD STYLE SHOOTER: Probably the coolest possibility is a halo style battlefield type game. This is more likely than the MMO, but Less likely than the Squad based shooter. The vast planet of reach would make for very diverse maps, and the classes are practically made already. ( jakal=sniper, etc.) This would probably be the most drool- worthy concept possible, i mean, think about it! The xbox's answer to MAG!!!! Yeah...
4. FPS RPG: ah, the RPG... Imagine a fallout 3 style FPS RPG in the Halo universe..... actually, Im not quite sure how likely this one is. On one hand, it would be pretty badass and without the restrictions that axed the MMO idea, on the other hand, Bungie has already announced the betas for what we can only assume is multiplayer, otherwise they would have called it a demo. Since RPGs don't usually have multiplayer, i don't think this one is very likely. But still, its an awesome possibility.
One final note before leaving is that the battle for reach was fought in space just as much as it was on the ground. How this will affect the game remains to be seen..........
