Subject: Your Guide to Searching for Old Threads.

With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.

Ah, and here comes Rip Saw the gloater ;-)

You've had more than two stickies, haven't you, Rip? I could have sworn I've seen more... maybe I just dreamt it.

Wow good idea making this a thread(damn why didn't I think of that!?!). Thanx again for that by the way.

I've had no luck in stickies. Probably because I'm not a very good thread maker in the forums. I just like to reply to people's threads, tell them what they should or shouldn't do. I kind of do what Barron does except I probably crack a joke while doing it.

I will hopefully get a news post in the coming month, or in the coming days. If my news post wasn't picked for what I was aiming at, it was probably because Bungie thought it would be too political in some way or they thought it may be taken offensive by others.

On to the subject, finally. I think if that certain thread meant that much to you. You would go number by number looking for it. The thing I hate about searches is that there are too many repetitive threads on this site.

I've seen many people complain about the lack of a search feature, but having searched for old threads myself, I've come up with something that may help. What follows is a list of things to do when looking for your post:

1.) Try to remember the name of the thread you are looking for (DUH!).

2.) Estimate the date that you posted it. This lets you know how far in the Forum you need to go back.

3.) Once you have the date in mind, try to remember whether it was a long-lasting thread with many posts, or a short-lived thread with few. If it was long-lasting, the last post in the thread will most likely be dated days after you posted it (last post-dates are listed by the threads). If short-lived, the last post will be dated the same day you posted the thread, or a day or two after. Also, long-lasting threads have larger post-counts, so you can narrow it down to what sort of thread you are looking for by simply looking at the numbers.

4.) Remember what Forum you posted it on. This is key in two ways:
-If you look in the wrong Forum, you won't find it (duh!).
-Different Forums have a different amount of daily posts. For instance, The Septagon and The Underground accumulate, usually, about one page of threads per day (even less for the Septagon), whereas New Mombassa and The Flood can recieve about 3+ per day. Knowing this can shorten the time it takes to find a post greatly, because it lets you know how many pages you can skip when looking at the old thread-names.

5.) Skip pages! Don't go page-by-page! That sucks. As I said, depending on the forum, you can skip different amounts of pages.

6.) Watch the dates of last-posts of threads carefully. When page-skimming, make sure you don't start going past what date the last post probably was.

7.) If it was related to a news-story on the B.net Homepage, look up the news story and see what date it was posted. That helps you narrow down the dates a little bit more.

8.) If it was a short-lived post, you probably shouldn't bother to bring it back up. Some posts are short-lived for a reason.... Also, don't bump stupid posts or posts that you know will just end up in a flame-fest.... That will just put a stinky aura around you, and the Mods will start to watch you closer (you won't like that).

9.) Have something going on in the background of your work to keep you more entertained. I recommend listening to a talkshow, or good music (talkshows you don't actually have to watch to be entertained by them... movies and tv series may not work well in this because of that). My favorite things to listen to include Iron Maiden and The Late Show with David Letterman (I love the Will it Float? mini-feature in particular.... Grinder Girl is awesome!).

Perhaps some people may think it commen sense, but there's my little guide. I may add more stuff into it when I think of more. Also, feel free to reply to this thread and offer your own advice in searching for old -blam!-.

Edit: Added number 9.

I also find that if I find a post I like, is to copy the url address and paste it into a document, that way I don't have to search for it.

My advice is to remember when counting, you go 1, 2, 3, 4, and so on. There are no repeat numbers. And if you can't find your post, look harder.

...... Aaaah crap! I forgot to change the damn "number 3" when I went back and redid some of it!

... There! That better? 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and finally, 8!
I AGREE

It was a cold day near the southern base in Blood Gulch. Cortana and I were relaxing over a game of Go Fish, WHEN OUT OF NO WHERE 700 BANSHEES CAME FLYING IN!!! I GRABED MY SPARTAN LASER AND LET HELL REIGN DOWN UPON THEM. I HOPPED IN THE NEAREST WARTHOG AND TOLD CORTANA TO GET IN.

*sigh* I wish I had a sticky...

But i just noticed, on the front -page sometimes it only lists 3 threads after the stickies. The other threads are still on the page, you need yo use the "next thread" and "previous thread" features.

EDIT: First Sticky! In the Flood...

These forums are very limited in terms of functionality and use I have noticed.

Along with missing a "Search" feature, it would be nice to have something to keep track of all your old threads/posts as well. =/

Or, you could stop your self-pitying!

A sticky is a thread that the mods have decided should be able to be viewed for eternity, so they put it at the top of the page and sticky it. This keeps it there, not getting moved to seperate pages if someone doesn't post on it for awhile.

That was a really bad explination.

Since there is a total lack of a search feature; a better way to find something is to use google.

Just append "site:www.bungie.net" on your google search; a recent search I did was.. "clan forums site:www.bungie.net"

This is way more helpful that trying to remember dates or page numbers or going through a hundred pages looking at subjects.

umm.. why not just use google to search:

in the search box just put:

site:bungie.net inurl:Forums/posts.aspx

after 'aspx' put two spaces in and then whatever you'd like to search on. so if you were to search on 'easter eggs' it would look like this:

site:bungie.net inurl:Forums/posts.aspx easter eggs

" You cant have what you want until you want what you have " A thought to get across to your clan when going for the other teams flag.

It would be helpful for the cool people here that i have been reading about to give an intro to exactly what the purpose for this site other than post ideas and quotes what other uses are there. I'm asking because i just started exploring this bungie site and it seems somewhat self explanitory, however I'm not hip to some of the terms such as stickies, threads, so if somebody could post like a welcome paragraph as to exactly step by step where i have arrived when i come into this site, what it is that i am looking at. Thanks...

With the exception of ZoomPooky, I urge everyone to get back on-topic in this thread. I may have started the debate on who has the most stickies in this thread, and for that, I apologize... I created this to help people find old posts. Don't reply unless you want to add another tip on how to find threads.

Hmph.... I never thought of my self as "cool."

Thank you.

.... Has Banshee Barron gotten any stickies yet, or did I just miss them?

No, I don't think Banshee Barron's gotten a sticky.

Hmmmmm.....

...Good...

Huh? What is this?

You just wait, Shai.

Good idea. A search would be good, as well as a link from the 'My Profile' tab up there to any threads you've started or posted in recently.
