Subject: Halo as a Christian Allegory

You're looking far too deep. Humans = Rational Minded People. Covenant = Highly Religious/Ignorant. Flood = Moral fallibility. The Covenant don't use logic or reason when thinking, they rely on their faith alone. They would wipe out all life to eliminate what they believe is "evil", and they believe instead of having just committed mass genocide, they would get some greater spiritual reward for it. The forerunners I suppose would be scientists and the Halos would simply be weapons of mass destruction. The moral then seems to suggest that we should be fighting desperately to keep those who are truly ignorant out of power. Also, we should be fighting against moral fallibility but we can't "purge" it like the covenant have in the past (glassing innocent people to contain the flood, similar to witch hunts).

This thread would have appealed to me more if it was written with crayons.

I broke one of the cords for my X11s because I couldn't get past the final American course in Doritos Crash Course.

Yeah Im sure each Halo represented a colour too, each being a colour of the Rainbow. The rainbow signified Gods promise to Moses that he wouldn't send another flood to wipe out humanity. Therfore, activating the 7 halos would kind of represent 'activating' a rainbow.

Oh and it was Lord Snakie who wrote about this Rainbow theory.

What?

Did anyone ever consider how the Arbiter/Heratic Camp Invasion, could be connected to the Apostle Paul and his conversion and persecution?

Futer day, 6/28/2011

Every story has a base off of some legend or religion like star wars takes alot from greek and roman mythology and some from the bible as well. so it seems that the halo story would be no different.

The news of today will fade into 'morrow. They are the strong, they'll survive!

The thing here is Christians can find their faith in anything when they look hard enough and want. to see it. Without even trying, I found a very anti-religious and possibly pagan message with the Arbiter and the Sangheili. A race that had been turned from their gods and forced to join a new religion at the edge of a sword. Then they find out the truth and overthrow that religion, trying to regain their roots.

I guess my point is that if you want to see god in Halo fine. Just please don't shove it down everyone's throat as "OMG this is what Halo meant!" That's simply what it meant to you.

Religon your funny why bring this into a video game its bad enough to hear it in real life

  • 06.12.2010 2:09 PM PDT

Spartans never die... they just revert to last checkpoint.

Well the Covenant can't be the equivalent of Christians if The Chief is the equivalent to Jesus and the Forerunners are Jews... Other than that it fits together perfectly.

He's not really "bringing it into it". He's just pointing out some incredibly clear religious symbolism in the game. A couple of these things are a stretch, but a good majority is just blatant religious symbolism.

but as you can see, it would be quite easy to find blatant symbolism for a number of religions... you're just seeing what you want to see... stop ruining my favourite game by bringing your religion into it!

You are taking a way too personal outlook on this game. This game isn't just your favorite game. It's a lot of peoples favorite game. Of course it would be quite easy to find symbolism for a number of religions. You are quite open to believe whatever interpretation you want! How am I, or anyone else, ruining your experience of the game by pointing out our own interpretations? By your logic, you would be ruining my favorite game by not accepting these interpretations. You are surely not. This subject of religion is a highly sensitive matter. There's no need to get so defensive.

BANOOSH

Excellent theory, very well written. Thread saved.

Just one thing, though;

The Ark is a giant installation located at the center of the fictional galaxy...

I do believe it's located in the outskirts of the galaxy, so as to avoid the Halo Array's destructive range.

=D

After I read this, I imagined the Chief pulling off his helmet and Jesus would be underneath.
Anyway awesome post.

Cool.

Almost only counts in horse-shoes and hand grenades.

(To the author)
I find this to be an excellent theory. I remember my friends and I talking about this back when C.E. came out. I, however, did not have the full connections developed. It's great to see that some people think along the same lines I do, and that I was on the right track about some of the symbols. The material about the Covenant of Moses and the Covenant alliance is brilliant. I, at the time, had an idea on how to place them, but that was before the "Great Journey" idea was presented and you have an excellent theory of symbolism to explain that. I applaud the author on thorough thought.

I apologize in advance for all the crappy jokes I make.

There are obvious bible relations in the Halo canon, but the OP is looking too hard into it.
Like Nemesis87 said you can easily find anti-religious relations as well.

Uh I'm a bit of a noob, what's an "Achronos"?

Nintenman7: Apply yourself... Seggi31: HHHHNNNNNNGGGGG

I think it's very loosely an allegory of what God did.

Like, it's so loose (insert dirty joke here) yeah.

But, seriously, I don't think it has much to do with it. Christ is about love, forgiveness, grace, and sacrifice. Master Chief is about take out the covies and save the world, lol. But there is the very least some sort of referencing with many of the names. The covenant could represent some of the pagan scary people from the OT, considering they like worshiped lifeless objects and killed each other and stuff.

Hey, I think the story is just cool, period. But good work fosho. There are definitely connections.

You do know Christmas and Sunday are originally Pagan holidays?

Thanks for the continued insight guys. Like I've said before, I realize that I'm definitely reaching (no pun intended ;) ) in many aspects of my article and certainly the creators of the game did not intend every aspect that I brought up. I do believe that Christianity is not the SOLE influence of the Halo universe, but it clearly points to some aspects of Christianity in a big way. To ignore the entire Ark/Covenant/Flood reference would be blatantly ignorant, for example. Christianity is a HUGE influence in the Western World, and thus it is bound to appear in many of our mediums. Just go watch a film like Grand Torino or The Departed and tell me there aren't religious influences. Also, I wrote this article as part of a university project and not just because of my intense nerdiness. I am, however, a rather intense nerd, so there's no sense telling me something I don't already know. ;) Happy posting, guys!

Don't worry, I have a coupon.

For starters as a Christian I call this blasphemy. Master Chief's real name is John dude, read the books. Dr.Halsey goes to MC's home world when John is only 6 and talks to him and he even says his name is John... last names are kept secret since they could use them to track the Spartan's roots which would look bad on the UNSC since they stole these kids from their parents.

Thus only first names and a numbers were used, John was subject 117. Even though only 75 subjects were drafted into the Spartan II project, that doesn't mean there weren't hundreds of subjects. They just had to narrow it down to the most promising recruits.

Makes sense to me. There's much evidence to support that John was the actual Christ.
